Why are duvets so thin?

XjustagirlX · 29/05/2022 09:00

Im trying to find a new duvet and they are all so thin. Even the ones that claim to be super full or bouncy.

am I missing something here? Do any of you mumsnetters have any tips or recommendations of where I can buy a full duvet from?

hotel duvets always seem to be full and bouncy, I wonder where they buy their duvets from?

I have a 15 tog synthetic one for winter, I think I purchased it from asda in the end I used the reviews to select on that people described as heavy! I have a 10 tog now with a weighted blanket over.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 29/05/2022 22:30

Good grief. 3 tog is too hot for me in an unheated bedroom in winter with the window open.

Don’t buy Hungarian goose down duvets. Some of the down comes from birds that are pinned down and the feathers roughly ripped out without anaesthetic, tearing the skin. The worst rips are sutured (again, without anaesthetic) and the process repeated every 6 weeks after regrowth. The birds are eventually killed for meat or foie gras. If you can’t be certain the down duvet you are buying used only feathers removed post mortem, stick to synthetic.

This is why I won’t ever buy goose or down. Trying to get to sleep in my big luxury duvet, knowing what went into producing it.

I just have 2 synthetic filled ones both in same duvet cover & it feels heavy.

We’ve got an airmax silent night duvet and it’s lovely.. it’s lovely for hot nights as even with the windows open the duvet doesn’t feel to heavy as it’s purpose is circulating air. It feels thick and bouncy and honestly with our new bed frame we feel like we’ve never known comfortable sleep before 😂

It's individual isn't it? I am under a winter weight wool duvet now and perfectly comfortable. Sleep under it until summer and then swap for a heavy cotton blanket and sheet

I got hooked on hotel pillows years ago. So ordered Marriott pillows. Liddell pillows also wonderful. I do like good linen

Same here, and the fluffy cloud ones are as fluffy as you want them to be..half a metre high. It just surrounds you so that you sleep really, really well.

@Doginthewindow this sounds amazing. Is your duvet like this? If so what is it called?

We have acquired quite a collection of duvets due to different bed sizes. My favourite is still a cheap one I bought from Asda when single and living in London. It is synthetic but sooo thick, heavy and cosy.

justasking111 · 30/05/2022 14:46

I felt really sad getting rid of the single duvet covers the children went through over the years, Disney marvel etc

BarbaraofSeville · 29/05/2022 21:47

But surely a thick duvet will be, by definition, high tog, so those of you that want a thick duvet that's not high tog are looking for something that doesn't exist?

Well, this is what the OP is asking, I think – is there a duvet that's puffy and has that lovely feeling of enveloping you, without being too warm?

Funnily enough, I started a thread about the exact same thing the other day. I'm just hijacking this one now Grin

Yes, we bought two at first then the rest of the family were desperate to have them too so bought two more.. They are truly amazing, and you can basically fluff them up to as high as you like. Let’s just say that if I drop my cat on the duvet, she is gone..you can’t see her. 😅I used to toss and turn all night, but I don’t anymore. They are called Happy Fluffy Cloud. I think I posted the link further up, but haven’t googled to see if you can buy them from somewhere else.

XjustagirlX · 30/05/2022 16:09

@Doginthewindow yes i clicked on your link. From a quick look it looks as though they dont do super king size though. They do look amazing!

I have a 1 tog duvet and a weighted blanket over my legs.

nearlyspringyay · 30/05/2022 16:16

I'm allergic to down so have a synthetic one from JL. It's light and fluffy and pouty and not too hot. If you want the weight what about a weighted blanket on top?

Ooh competitive undertoging who knew that was a thing. I bet a whole salad is just too much food too!

Lonecatwithkitten · 30/05/2022 16:21

I like the breathability of natural fibres, but hated the way down clumps after a period of time.
I changed to wool it changed my life - now have superking all seasons from the wool room a 9 tog and a 4.5 tog that can be buttoned together to make 13.5 tog.
I have a wool mattress as well.

Ours is from Asda too, and surprisingly thick and cosy for the price! I was really surprised with how good quality it is.

SofiaSoFar · 30/05/2022 16:23

We've had all sorts of duvets from extremely expensive down ones (several hundred pounds) to synthetic, to cotton, etc.

Following recommendations on here we switched to wool and I can say it's the best duvet I've ever had, including high-end hotels.

We bought from Soak and Sleep. I think they're New Zealand wool?

PattyMelt · 30/05/2022 16:41

We have a Fogarty 10.5 tog synthetic and it's lovely and bouncy. I swap it for the summer one usually but so far this year I'm still cold at night.

Is it just for you Op?

If not-a single each?

fishbiscuits · 30/05/2022 17:17

A few years ago we stayed in a posh hotel and the duvet was so lovely I made a note of the make. It was a microfibre one from Richard Haworth. I’ve never got round to buying one for myself though.

fishbiscuits · 30/05/2022 17:18

Richard Haworth sorry.

I would buy two single ones anyway. If you want to wash them one day, there is no way a double would fit the washing machine.

Same here, but I'm menopausal. DP has a 13.5 tog duvet on his side of the bed. I have a cotton sheet (no duvet). My only real advice is never, ever buy artificial duvets (or anything else, in fact). Goose down is best, though I have friends who swear by wool.

EBearhug · 30/05/2022 18:02

I have a 3.5 tog summer one and a 9.5 tog winter one, and they can button together to make a 13 tog one, though I think I would probably die of heat exhaustion from that.
