Why are duvets so thin?

XjustagirlX · 29/05/2022 09:00

Im trying to find a new duvet and they are all so thin. Even the ones that claim to be super full or bouncy.

am I missing something here? Do any of you mumsnetters have any tips or recommendations of where I can buy a full duvet from?

hotel duvets always seem to be full and bouncy, I wonder where they buy their duvets from?

I have 2. Wouldn't manage without two now.

Bananas52 · 29/05/2022 09:26

M&S feels like down duvet is great. I like a thick, heavy & 'crunchy' duvet and our 13.5 tog one is just great.

buckleten · 29/05/2022 09:33

I have an M&S duck and goose down 10.5tog and it is lovely - full and soft, like sleeping in a cloud!

Crimesean · 29/05/2022 09:46

Are you looking at them in their packages? They puff up once you shake them out.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/05/2022 09:48

Hotel duvets are far too hot, especially as the rooms are also usually boiling.

Maybe all the shops have their summer ranges in right now, as the number of people with an immediate need for a 10+ tog duvet must be almost zero.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 29/05/2022 09:50

Some of the modern synthetic fillings are a lot warmer than their predecessors, so you need less filling. If you want fluff, you need a high loft down duvet. Down rather than feathers for super fluff.

MassiveSalad22 · 29/05/2022 09:50

We have a lovely puffy down one, it seems to not be as hot and sweaty as synthetic ones too despite being more full.

XjustagirlX · 29/05/2022 09:51

@coodawoodashooda do you mean you have two separate duvets in the same duvet cover. That is a good idea.

OutDamnedSpot · 29/05/2022 09:53

surely the higher tog ones are thicker? Just buy a higher tog one?

(a word of warning though, my winter duvet is so heavy I can’t change it on my own)

Lemonlemon88 · 29/05/2022 09:53

We have a heavy wool duvet that isnt super thick but is very warm. It is two clipped together so you can take one off for the summer months.

XjustagirlX · 29/05/2022 09:54

That’s for everyone’s suggestions. I will look at the M&S ones recommended. Also it looks like down is better than synthetic or feathers?

A lot of hotel chains sell their bedding, have a look on their websites

pussycatlickinglollyices · 29/05/2022 09:57

@XjustagirlX Which weight one did you buy?
I hate heavy/thick/hot duvets, so could do with a recommendation. Smile
DH has a 10.5tog with a 13.5tog over the top and I have a 4.5tog just for me...
We have them in separate covers. Most nights the heaviest ends up on the floor as he gets too hot, then gets retrieved at about 3-4am because he's "too cold".🥵

Madcats · 29/05/2022 09:58

Another recommendation for a wool duvet.

DH acquired a duvet that his mum had cut open and added an eiderdown's worth of feathers; it weighed a ton! It was good for when we had a winter without heating during house renovation.

Herja · 29/05/2022 10:01

DS has a super fluffy one from Ikea. I forget the name of his one, but worth a look there too.

No. Just 2 separate duvets. One on top of the other. I am a single parent with young kids so the duvet is always being pulled away!

Trafficjamlog · 29/05/2022 10:14

I have a lovely warm 10.5 tog for winter. It’s an M&S synthetic one but it’s good quality, I have the same in a 4tog for summer. I think you do need to be prepared to pay a bit for a good duvet, the cheap ones are a bit of a false economy

Svara · 29/05/2022 10:17

If it's the warmth you are after just buy a higher tog? If it's weight, we use weighted blankets on top for half the year, too hot by May though.

OldTinHat · 29/05/2022 10:18

I have a cheap supermarket duvet but put a weighted blanket on top. I'm still under it now 😁

Tulipvase · 29/05/2022 10:21

We have a wool duvet, think it’s 7 tog? Used all year round. Not as fluffy as a feather duvet though. Can’t imagine using a much higher tog.

meganorks · 29/05/2022 10:22

I can never find one cool enough! We have a 1 tog that we have used all winter (we did have a thin microfibre cover over in the coldest months.) I'm already too hot at night. I think my husband might be a decaying nuclear reactor at night.

Babdoc · 29/05/2022 10:22

Don’t buy Hungarian goose down duvets. Some of the down comes from birds that are pinned down and the feathers roughly ripped out without anaesthetic, tearing the skin. The worst rips are sutured (again, without anaesthetic) and the process repeated every 6 weeks after regrowth. The birds are eventually killed for meat or foie gras. If you can’t be certain the down duvet you are buying used only feathers removed post mortem, stick to synthetic.

notangelinajolie · 29/05/2022 10:29

Have a look in Dunelm. They have all the quilts they sell hung up together. In some kind of order too so you can feel and compare them from the thinnest to the heaviest.

Yeah, our Premier Inn one is quite fluffy.

Justkeeppedaling · 29/05/2022 10:31

You need a feather and down duvet.
We have a summer one and a winter one. I'd buy the most expensive one you can afford.
