Why are duvets so thin?

XjustagirlX · 29/05/2022 09:00

Im trying to find a new duvet and they are all so thin. Even the ones that claim to be super full or bouncy.

am I missing something here? Do any of you mumsnetters have any tips or recommendations of where I can buy a full duvet from?

hotel duvets always seem to be full and bouncy, I wonder where they buy their duvets from?

I think if you spend proper money you don't have this issue. It depends how important it is to you but if you went somewhere like John Lewis you would probably not have this issue.

NotMeekNotObedient · 29/05/2022 10:34

Nimbus brand all the way!

Oblomov22 · 29/05/2022 10:39

I agree. I've looked at loads, reputable firms, some not cheap, I find nearly all of them thin, lacking in filling.

Oblomov22 · 29/05/2022 10:41

I disagree, it's not the money. The slightly lower togg ones just seem to be poorly made, with hardly any filling. I hate it. In fact even the higher togg ones are miserly.

Oblomov22 · 29/05/2022 10:42

It's not the warmth I want, it's the fullness of filling, if that makes sense.

HoppingPavlova · 29/05/2022 10:52

What tog are you looking at that you need two? Just buy the right tog in the first place.

Doginthewindow · 29/05/2022 11:12

We recently bought Happy Fluffy Cloud duvets. They are fantastic.

I have a lovely warm 10.5 tog for winter. It’s an M&S synthetic one but it’s good quality, I have the same in a 4tog for summer. I think you do need to be prepared to pay a bit for a good duvet, the cheap ones are a bit of a false economy

Agree with this.
You need 2 duvets summer 4.5 and winter 10.5.
I spent around £100 each from JL.
Cheap duvets are thin and miserable, I hate the synthetic ones as they dont settle nicely around you.

BigWoollyJumpers · 29/05/2022 11:46

I bought a 12 tog (not available any more sadly) from Debenhams 20 years ago - still going strong, is that terrible? Maybe. It was very expensive at the time, being 100% down, but is very light, still very fluffy, and perfectly warm. I use it continuously in Winter and Summer. The fact that it is still going strong, means it was money well spent.

Recent purchases from JL haven't lasted as well, although we recently bought an M&S one for the spare bed, and that seems to be a good loft. 10.5, feather and down. We'll see how long it lasts.

Don’t buy Hungarian goose down duvets. Some of the down comes from birds that are pinned down and the feathers roughly ripped out without anaesthetic, tearing the skin. The worst rips are sutured (again, without anaesthetic) and the process repeated every 6 weeks after regrowth. The birds are eventually killed for meat or foie gras. If you can’t be certain the down duvet you are buying used only feathers removed post mortem, stick to synthetic.

Yes I stopped using feather and down duvets or pillows once I found this out, despite what packaging may say there is a lot of bad practice around this.

From then on I used wool, we have a wool duvet (which isnt thick but is very warm), a cotton bedspread, wool pillows, wool mattress protector and bamboo mattress topper

XjustagirlX · 29/05/2022 12:22

@Oblomov22 i don’t like being really warm at night. So it’s not the warm tog I’m looking for it’s the actual thickness and fluffiness I want.

i bought a 10.5 tog but apparently the tog doesnt dictate how fluffy it is.

Down high tog.

Good duvets are ££££ though but last donkeys years.

XjustagirlX · 29/05/2022 12:24

@pussycatlickinglollyices the most recent one I bought was a 10.5 tog silent night hotel collection.

If you want a duvet to feel thick, or heavy, try a cheap synthetic filling where it basically isnt a great insulator so they need more filling

motogirl · 29/05/2022 12:28

I find hotel ones thin often, but they are fine heat wise

2bazookas · 29/05/2022 12:37

We have three, different thicknesses, filling material, weight and TOG, for different times of year.

Quality vendors list the filling material, weight, and TOG. Look online, you'll find far more choice (and price range) than at the local supermarket.

Same here, and the fluffy cloud ones are as fluffy as you want them to be..half a metre high. It just surrounds you so that you sleep really, really well.

Can you get thickness and fluffiness without too much warmth?

my flat is boiling and I use the lightest tog, I think.

Notanotherwindow · 29/05/2022 12:45

10.5 tog is summer weight for me. I have a 15 tog winter one but I have the summer one on top of it and a weighted blanket on top of that. If it's sub zero outside, I also have a fleece blanket.

Alwayshoovering · 29/05/2022 13:13

Cheap and/or low tog duvets are thin. You need a good quality one if you want it to be thick and bouncy.

I got one from dunelm about 3 years ago that I paid £80 for. It's still thick and bouncy.
You can pick duvets up for £15 but within a few months the filling balls and they go flat.

gunnersgold · 29/05/2022 13:25

You do know they come in tog value so get a 15 tog one . That won't be thin!
They are vacuum packed now in shops to take up more room too.

Oblomov22 · 29/05/2022 21:44

Well I've searched M&S, JL, Dunelm, the old Debenhams. Haven't found a thick, thickly filled with stuffing, low tog, so far.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/05/2022 21:47

But surely a thick duvet will be, by definition, high tog, so those of you that want a thick duvet that's not high tog are looking for something that doesn't exist?

IJoinedJustForThisThread · 29/05/2022 21:51

I was about to say get a feather duvet as they feel nice and heavy, but then I read @Babdoc post and am never going to buy feather duvets again.

I have an “all seasons” duvet which is a 4.5tog summer duvet which poppers to a 9 tog autumn duvet to make a winter duvet. (Previously had a 4.5 + 10.5 which was better as warmer). I took the 4.5 tog duvet off last weekend and have felt really cold all week with just the 9 tog duvet.

Yes. I would never buy anything made from down.

I have a 9 tog and a 4.5 tog. They are designed to be clipped together in winter but I keep them in separate covers so can pull the extra one on and off as I need it .
