Every household?????

So, the chancellor is going to give every household £400 for heating. Surely there should be a cut off of household income? The Beckhams, Elton John, james Dyson, Harry styles…….they all get the money too? . I say this as someone in the fortunate position of not needing the £400- I’d much rather it went to someone who does need it.Just seems a huge waste of public money to give it to everyone

High income households already pay shit loads of tax and NI, why shouldn't they get something back from this.

Because they have a high income and are not having to decide between heating and eating. Grow up.

Most people with lots of houses tend to rent them out and the electricity bill is paid by tenant so it’s the tenant thst will get rather than the house owner. There are some where utilities are included as part of the rent so if that’s the case the house owner will get

I actually think that high income households should be treated in the same way that low income households are treated as far as the £400 energy help is concerned. It's their high(er) taxes which are pumping money into government economy/coffers. They have higher spending habits than the average Joe/Josie and higher outgoings. Their cash flow may not be all you think it is
Be fair. I don't begrudge them anything as, talking about the vast majority, they've earned it not sat on their backsides waiting for handouts or bemoaning their position.
Not all less fortunate individuals moan but there are a lot that do resent others with a higher income being the recipients of government money.

LoisLane66 · 02/06/2022 11:23

I won't get the 400 energy help as I pay my landlord for electricity which is separate from my rent and billed monthly BUT, it's a business rate and fixed until October 2024 so however much it goes up in the meantime, mine won't change and I only pay half of the standing charge. Current bills are averaging £13-15pm depending on use... naturally. I'm certainly not envious of those who do get it.

Your virtue is noted. The rest of us are concerned with how fair society is, because it matters: especially in a country that has become more and more unequal over decades of claiming to be more and more virtuous.

How did I guess that the young and private tenants are going to be screwed over by this ill-thought-out half-baked attempt at distraction.

LoisLane66 · 02/06/2022 13:33

No government, whatever their colour, is going to please everyone or even come close. It's very unattractive to display envy, greed or bitterness. Some decisions about the dispersement of these monies would take far too long and be far more costly to implement and that in itself would cause unrest.
The people making these decisions and working out the most creative and fair way of helping with rising costs, are just ordinary people, doing what we do when we budget our income against outgoings, but on a far far grander and more convoluted scale. They have to consult with and come to agreements with many government departments who all have a say in the final outcome. There will be 'winners' and 'losers' and both must accept what we do or don't receive with good grace.

Yep the highest earners pay the most tax, of course they do. Like Rishi and his wife.

LoisLane66 · 02/06/2022 19:49

Rishi and his wife are not the only high earners in the UK but it suits some individuals to wheel out the same names time and again.
There are people on here who have high incomes whether individually or as a couple. We're not necessarily talking about millions or high net worth families, we're generally talking about the 40/45% tax group.

LoisLane66 · 02/06/2022 20:01

People in general only do with their money what the law allows them to do. Whether that sits well with others who envy them is of no consequence.
If you don't like the laws re UK residents/ citizens having bank accounts in certain Swiss cantons, the IoM or other countries, then take it up with your MP. It's not the fault of those who choose to legally squirrel away their earnings.

I do wonder what will happen with people who, like yourself, do not pay the bills directly. Will their landlords not charge for energy until the £400 is gone? Or will they reduce the rent?

LoisLane66 · 02/06/2022 21:51

@XenoBitch
I've explored it to some extent but had no concrete answers. Contacted EDF (with them for gas (domestic in my name) and (indirectly) electricity.
Ofgem suggested ringing them back mid-summer when they had more info.
Age Concern suggested emailing MP and EDF.
CAB energy advice line suggested contacting landlord and asking what their plan is. Meanwhile wait until, yes, mid July when energy companies have more info and they (CAB) will make an appointment for me to go to their local office and they'll ring EDF on my behalf to see if a solution can be found.
So...no result, which isn't surprising as it's too soon to know the details.
My landlord owns the building and the ground floor business rents that part and I rent the top two floors but we have no shared space and my property is entirely separate.
I've taken photos of the two electricity meters in the business, one marked MAIN and one marked FLAT.
If owning a domestic property, whether you live in it or not, means that you receive the 400 (as in second or multiple homes) then they should reduce the electricity bill accordingly.
I did read that it will be happening in October and the following 5 months, so your provider reduces your bills over 6 months.
In my case, it would take a lot longer to use up the 400, more like 24 - 28 months.
Another consideration is that it's a business rate which I can't alter and wasn't told at the outset even though it's a residential address, the meter is inside a business.
I don't feel badly done to but there may be others in the same situation, or others whose rent includes energy and water bills. I can see those landlords putting rents up beyond the tenants ability to pay. 🙁

LoisLane66 · 02/06/2022 21:58

Doubly complicated in that the bill is one amount in landlord's name. Business pays their usage portion to landlord and I pay my (lesser) portion after we receive our respective bills worked out by the landlord which, to be fair, are spot on as I can work it out myself.
