"Have a good eve"

When friends end a message with "have a good evening" do you see this as them saying in not so many words "I don't want to message you anymore tonight" or do you read "have a good eve" differently.

They will speak to/see you another day. It's a polite dismissal. They aren't expecting to hear from you again that evening.

TooManyPJs · 25/05/2022 22:46

It depends a little on the context but usually yes a text ending something like "have a good evening" is usually ending or acknowledging the end of the conversation.

Newmumatlast · 25/05/2022 22:46

Yep I agree. They're done for the evening.

ILoveMyLifeToday · 25/05/2022 22:47

It's politely ending the conversation.

Do you see this As a bit rude ? I do.

No, it's not rude. It's polite.

They aren't forced to keep replying to texts from you.

catandcoffee · 25/05/2022 22:49

Not rude, just their cut off point has been reached.

SpikeyHatePotato · 25/05/2022 22:50

I don’t see that it’s rude, just because you may want to carry on talking, doesn’t mean they have to!

obviously, if you were in the middle of telling them about some difficult situation it might be a bit insensitive. But if it was just general chat about the day/week, or when you might catch up next, etc, then perfectly reasonable.

No? They're doing other things and don't want to message you anymore. How is that rude?

cherrymax · 25/05/2022 22:50

I don't think it's rude. Surely it's better to signal the end of the conversation than for them to then need to ignore future messages. They might have stuff to do, might want an early night. It does wind me up when friends who stay up later than me are still messaging at 11.30.

Sillystripytail · 25/05/2022 22:54

No, it's not rude. It's a polite way of ending the conversation at that time.

carefullycourageous · 25/05/2022 22:56

I do this, it is the same as saying 'bye' on the phone. It is normal.

How else do you end a conversation? Or would you just leave it hanging forever?

I do it usually when I am switching my phone to silent, so that people will know I am not going to reply.

Sofasogood1 · 25/05/2022 22:59

Is it better or worse than ignoring any subsequent message from you? I'd say better

Exactly this

What would you prefer?

Scabbyknackers · 25/05/2022 23:01

Not rude! Just bowing out politely. If you were in the middle of a crisis or needed something urgent then it's not the most helpful but a normal convo then it's fine! I'd rather my friend felt comfortable to say when they were ready to go for the night, as in a phone call

It depends what time it's sent and how much chit chat went on before

purpleme12 · 25/05/2022 23:01

Well to me it's quite formal it's not something a friend would say to me or vice versa.
It's something I'd say on the phone to a customer at work

Wouldn't it be ruder for them to abruptly stop messaging?

Bikeybikeface · 25/05/2022 23:03

You see “have a good evening” as rude 🤯

Strawberriesaregreat · 25/05/2022 23:10

Similar to 'speak soon'

GreatCuppa · 25/05/2022 23:12

I would take it as they don’t want to talk anymore.

spotcheck · 25/05/2022 23:14

Well, now I'm wondering why OP thinks it's rude!!!?

TooManyPJs · 25/05/2022 23:29

Why do think it's rude?
