Who will win between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard defamation case

Egtermekaar · 25/05/2022 14:49

If you were jury in this case, how would you decide?

I think Johnny Depp will win because he had strong, reliable and consistent evidence of "his" case

I hope MN will allow debate about a matter of public interest.

I've tried to watch as much as the trial as I can when not workinng but I'm not sure what happened with Eve Barlow, Amber's alleged GF. I can see that she was caught faking evidence, using her phone, and was thrown out of courst as a result.
Did all this happen in front of the jury? Does the jury know that she faked evidence?
Also if Amber is, as alleged, using house insurance to pay lawyers, does that mean her lawyers were chosen for her and not chosen by her?

LetitiaLeghorn · 30/05/2022 21:49

@JenniferAlisonPhilipaSue She was caught tweeting and texting from the front row of the courtroom which is not allowed. So the judge banned her from the courthouse for the rest of the trial.

She had tried to interfere with the proceedings over one of Depps witnesses and Depps team objected. Responding to this, the judge banned her for texting and texting.

LetitiaLeghorn · 30/05/2022 21:59

@JenniferAlisonPhilipaSue I also read about the house insurance story. This litigation has been going on for three years and has cost over $6m. Would house insurance cover that? It sounded from the report that her lawyers told her to claim and pay them that way. So not that the house insurance had hired them. Which is puzzling.

  1. If the house insurance is paying, why couldn't she afford better witnesses?
  2. She said the trial had cost her $6m. But then she's fond of semantics where money is concerned.
  3. If she's not paying herself, why couldn't she carry on donating her settlement?

However, if the house insurance hired her lawyers, it would explain why she saddled herself with that lot.

I think she will win her case and his will lose his. In the court of public opinion he's easily won. This trial may have cost millions but his career was worth more and there's a good chance he can get it back on track now. She's unlikely to ever work in Hollywood again and after the stories that have come out she can't sell herself as a spokeswoman for abuse survivors either.

I do worry for her, she's clearly damaged and desperate. I don't know how she's going to get her life back on track after this. With her existing mental health issues I worry she will be bullied to death. As awful as their relationship was, she doesn't deserve that.

It is a good question - what do the Jussie Smollets and Amber Heards of the celeb world do after they lose public support? People that have always acted and now can't and have name and face recognition issues related to legal woes and lying - what career is next?

Change your name and be a voice actor?

mynamesnotMa · 31/05/2022 16:14

There are no winners. Its wrong to have televised this.
The opinions based on tainted views has been staggering. Its opened the flood gates for other rich powerful types to shut those less powerful than them up.

AchatAVendre · 31/05/2022 16:27

Leopolds If only she'd taken his advice they'd both still probably have good careers and much better lives.

Its 2022 and I can't believe I'm reading it. If only she had never spoken, been a good little compliant girly, taken her ex husband's advice, the man who makes all those awful comments about women. Why in the remotest corners of the universe would anyone take their ex's advice??

JenniferAlisonPhilipaSue · 31/05/2022 18:47

apparently the jury have just asked for clarification as to whether they should be looking at the title of the op-ed or the entire content.
Not sure what that could mean for the outcome.

I don't understand people with this opinion.

He's hardly shut her up, she's got an international platform!

Because Johnny knew how it would play out and didn't actually want to put her through it, his hand was forced.

The texts are irrelevant and should never have been admitted as evidence.

I’d be really surprised if this jury can all agree on a verdict - can they take a majority decision?

NannyOggsWhiskyStash · 31/05/2022 21:45

Monica Lewinsky has written rather beautifully about this case, and the wider issues around social media changing our behaviour as human beings. We do not know these people, they are not our friends, so why is everyone so upset about this, and why does my social media keep sending me reams of vile comments about Amber Heard, it's like some sick disgrace machine. You can read it here

JenniferAlisonPhilipaSue · 31/05/2022 22:09

Jury have gone home. no decision today.

HRTQueen · 31/05/2022 22:28

JD has won regardless of the verdict

he has got what he wants

now will his career get back on track well that depends if he can staff off the drink and drugs so unlikely to last long plus he is hitting 60

EmeraldShamrock1 · 31/05/2022 23:09

JD has won regardless of the verdict.

I think a lot of people see him in a different light.

They're both ruined regardless of the verdict, there's no winners once you air your private business in public.

My understanding is unless it's unanimous, Johnny loses. I could be wrong though.

I think he'll be OK. a year or so and a director like Guy Richie will take him on.

But does he want to act again? Probably not. He's reaching his 60s, and may well just live his life.

Yes, I can see her heading that way. Which while I think she's talked a pile of shite this entire trial and I am angry at her for doing so, nobody deserves that. I hope she will be OK. she has a baby.

Jonny is not ruined. His reputation used to be but not now. He'll be able to make movies again if he so chooses.

BigFatLiar · 01/06/2022 08:39

Seems he was on stage performing with a band in Sheffield this weekend. Doesn't seem to have done him any harm. Looks like he got a good reception.

Outside Mumsnet I doubt many are that bathered.

TheAverageUser · 01/06/2022 18:47

Verdict being read at 3pm ET I think.

That's not quite right. In Virginia for a plaintiff to win, the jury must be unanimous. So if one dissents, Depp can't win. But he doesn't lose either. Its a hung jury and he can refile.

But would he bother refiling? He's just been playing guitar with Jeff Beck at the Albert Hall and got a standing ovation. I would sa missi accomplished.

JenniferAlisonPhilipaSue · 01/06/2022 19:05

verdict at 8pm our time
