American needs to fight against terror closer to home

And focus their energy on teenage boys who seem to be causing terror frequently by shooting us schools. Supermarkets etc etc.

What never ceases to amaze me is somehow these shooters manage to escape the stereotypes that others ethnic groups find it impossible to shake off.

RIP to those dead ok the latest massacre in the US.

The US needs to fight against terror and start with those close to home.

Also, this once again is an issue with male violence as another poster pointed out.

When was a mass shorting ever carried out by a woman? Never.

It's an issue it needs calling out and it needs addressing - why are teenage boys wired in this way to keep doing this crap.

I fail to use mental health as the common excuse too because it's offensive to mental health sufferers. I'm sure it plays a part in all of this but we can't keep saying 'oh he was crazy'.

It's just a tragic mess, US has a lot to answer for. Banning abortion but keeping guns on the streets. Sickening.

I do not understand a nation that wants to control women's bodies by banning abortion because "all life is precious", but is perfectly happy for small children to be a fair price to pay for "the right to bear arms". What a screwed up nation...

Exactly this. It’s insane!

OneTC · 25/05/2022 08:12

The vast majority of Mexicans are of Spanish descent. So yes white

There's white and there's white

Honestly, America is a back water now.

It really is.

A Wild West mentality, where people can shoot ip swathes of people. And women’s rights’ eroding.

It is not an example, or a leader, and in any way aspirational.

It is quite the opposite.

I used to look up to America when I was younger. Before the Internet exploded I believed what we were fed through the media and through news- I'd have given anything to live there and have a chance at the American dream (not even money wise, but white picket fence). Now realise what a load of crap that all was. Despite having some of the most beautiful places on earth (ie national parks) I don't ever want to step foot onto such a regressive country.

Salvador Ramos.

Not exactly white supremacy is he? Hmm

Indeed but never let an opportunity pass to have a go and blame something on a white man here on Mumsnet.

Except the 5 times it happened. Still men have done 123 in the same time period, but yeah it's definitely not Never

How do gun lobbyists square this in their own heads?

He’s Hispanic. But I’m not sure what point you are making about race.

What do you think the solution is? Make all guns illegal? That’ll keep them off the streets, wing it? I mean, it worked for heroin and cocaine, right?

You are missing the point when it comes to gun ownership. Stopping responsible law-abiding gun owners from having guns will not stop this sort of thing from happening.

BritWife putting into words exactly what is wrong with America at the moment. 😞 As long as guns are valued more than people-- therein lies the problem. America is broken.

Neverendingdust · 25/05/2022 08:35

Outlawing guns would be a start but I think the horse has already bolted when it comes to changing the hate in America. Utterly horrific massacres as now common place and chilling as it is no longer leave a lasting memory because it happens so often.

It doesn’t take 500 million or however many guns there are in the US to massacre a classroom, it only takes 1 and a very disturbed individual to carry it out.

Dashdotdotdash · 25/05/2022 08:36

So how come other countries which don't allow guns to "responsible law-abiding gun owners" aren't seeing all these school shootings, @BritWifeInUSA ?

Toddlerteaplease · 25/05/2022 08:38

@Neverendingdust I saw the news headline. Thought how tragic, and scrolled on. Because it's so frequent now. It barely registers.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 25/05/2022 08:42

How are schools so accessible? I can't speak for all UK primary schools but every single one I've beeb past/people I know attend; have high fencing, locked gates all day etc. It would be almost impossible for anyone to access the grounds without scaling these fences, but by that point they'd be spotted and the police called.

How is it possible to get into Elementary/Middle/High Schools in the US - why wouldnt they fence them all?

OneTC · 25/05/2022 08:43

They used to have mass shootings quite frequently in Australia.

Then they banned the civilian/military kind of guns people used in mass shootings.

Now there's no mass shootings

Theluggage15 · 25/05/2022 08:47

Same for me @Toddlerteaplease If it had happened in Germany, Spain, Australia or wherever I would have been horrified but I saw the news and just thought oh another one.

The thing is you don't need to ban all guns, the UK hasn't. Certain types of gun are banned and you have to adhere to rules and regulations, mainly safety related when owning a gun. Why do so many Americans act as if it is an all or nothing solution, are the militant people the ones who know they won't be granted guns if legislation is tightened?

AnneElliott · 25/05/2022 09:09

Absolutely tragic for those poor children and their families. And I can't see America ever changing their rules - they didn't after Sandy Hook so what on earth will make them change then now?

Completely bonkers to let normal people own semi automatic weapons. There is just no lawful need to own such a thing.

I've also wondered this. With these types of incidents, they have always walked in and went to a class or teaching area. How does nobody stop them before that ? In our schools, you can't get pass the gate without a member of staff vetting you. School gate is locked and entry into the building- you need to be buzzed in.

THIS!

Its not just the mass school shootings it’s also the accidental shootings when little Lucy finds Daddy’s gun in the cupboard and thinks it’s a toy and shoots her baby brother…

I also used to think the USA was so amazing and progressive! In reality it just appears it’s potentially pretty damn dangerous unless you’re a white straight rich man…

On my list of ‘would NEVER live here’ alongside a few others where women and their unborn babies are actively punished for unwanted pregnancies and just going to school can be fatal.

CharSiu · 25/05/2022 09:24

There are white supremacist massacres but the other type of mass killing is carried out by young men who are part of or heavily influenced by the INCEL online subculture. This young man was not white, his life will be studied and it may transpire he was influenced by this culture. If you are unaware of this growing subculture have a quick read of this it’s a BBC news link so safe www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-trending-44053828

There have always been outsiders in life, men and women who struggle to fit in. Now people can congregate online. There have been many threads on here over the years with people admitting to being lonely and without friends, it’s a common recurring theme. Now imagine loneliness but with impressionable misogynistic young men who have grown up in an online world, it’s a world they can slip in to all too easily. It obviously does not mean they are all destined to become killers. but it’s an incredibly dangerous world.

Americans have had the right to bear arms since 1776.
School shootings such as this did not start until the 1960s.
This suggests that guns are secondary to a primary cause. Mental health.

Calling for gun control (and doing nothing) is easier than tackling a huge mental health issue.

That's more to do with the fact that;

  1. Mass education for all wasn't really a thing until after ww2, less than 10% of 15-18 years were attending high school in 1920 rising to 75% by 1940 but then there was the war.

  2. Automatic or semi-automatic guns that allow people to commit mass shootings didn't exist until the turn of the 20th century and weren't easily available to the general public from the get go. Interestingly, the AR-15 so often used in these butcherings went on sale to the American public in 1960, exactly when you claim mass school shootings started.

Mental health may well be an underlying factor but I would argue not a primary cause, unless you subscribe to the thought that people who are racist, homophobic, misogynistic, or full of hate are just mentally unwell. Guns, and semi automatic guns in particular, are without doubt the primary driver for mass shootings.

No guns = no shootings. Tight gun control = less shooting (which is the best America can hope for).
