American needs to fight against terror closer to home

And focus their energy on teenage boys who seem to be causing terror frequently by shooting us schools. Supermarkets etc etc.

What never ceases to amaze me is somehow these shooters manage to escape the stereotypes that others ethnic groups find it impossible to shake off.

RIP to those dead ok the latest massacre in the US.

The US needs to fight against terror and start with those close to home.

It’s got bigger all to do with race and it’s bigger all to do with left vs right wing too. It’s bullshit to claim that the democrats want to do something. Don’t they bloody always? Yet nothing changes. Look at the abortion debate. If they REALLY wanted to cement that shit in law they would have done that a long time ago. BOTH sides could have done something. About many issues. They choose not to because they can weaponise a number of social issues in election campaigns. Total red herring to put this down to political sides OR race. Both arguments just keep people divided.

He’s Hispanic. But I’m not sure what point you are making about race.

What do you think the solution is? Make all guns illegal? That’ll keep them off the streets, wing it? I mean, it worked for heroin and cocaine, right?

You are missing the point when it comes to gun ownership. Stopping responsible law-abiding gun owners from having guns will not stop this sort of thing from happening.

You do things one stage at a time. You tighten up the laws on who can possess a weapon (you need a licence, strict background checks), and you restrict what kind of weapons are available to be licensed to the general public - shotguns/air rifles fine, handguns for those with a professional need only, and no fully automatic weapons except for government users. You offer amnesties.

are you actually joking?

DrippyLongstocking · 25/05/2022 02:51

The US represents about 4% of the world’s population, but accounts for about 90% of all school shootings.

Gee I wonder what the problem could be:

I am Mexican-American.
All four of my grandparents and my father were born and raised in Mexico. My mother and I were born and raised in Texas on the US/Mexico border.
Back when my sister and I were born in the 60's and 70's, our birth certificates state that we are of "white" race but of "Mexican" heritage.
Although Mexico (in North America), Central and South America were colonized by the white Spanish and Portuguese, we are not afforded any "benefit" of the "white" part of our ancestry. I am a dark-skinned person and I can tell you that no one would consider me "white" despite what my ancestry or my birth certificate may say. I have had my fair share of discrimination, thank you very much.
A young man drove over 500 miles to "kill Mexicans" in my beloved hometown in 2019. He entered a Walmart and massacred 23 people and injured 23 others. That 21-year-old was a white supremacist. This was not the same OP.

But there never is any start to this 'one stage at a time' process, when does the first stage begin? Sandy Hook was 10 years ago and nothing has changed

yes it will, it worked here in Australia.

Flaxmeadow · 25/05/2022 03:45

After Dunblane (1996), handguns were banned in the UK in 1997

SnowyPetals · 25/05/2022 04:39

I do not understand a nation that wants to control women's bodies by banning abortion because "all life is precious", but is perfectly happy for small children to be a fair price to pay for "the right to bear arms". What a screwed up nation...

Exactly what I said to my husband! Totally screwed up. pro life up until the moment your baby is born

Flaxmeadow · 25/05/2022 01:19

The vast majority of Mexicans are of Spanish descent. So yes white

In the USA, Mexicans do not consider themselves white, nor are they considered to be by others.

CheerfulYank · 25/05/2022 04:51

I don’t know. I am just numb and sad.

We probably can’t put the toothpaste back in the tube. If we ban guns it would cause a civil war (truly), and even if we powered through that, who would go around taking them? Most police officers and soldiers I know are extremely pro-gun. They’d revolt before disarming your average citizen.

Im just numb.

I dont know who this is, it seems like a well sports person.

Powerful words by Steve Kerr. He is the coach of one of the best basketball teams in the country and his father was shot by gunmen in Beirut in 1984.

It’s not about banning guns @CheerfulYank, it’s about controlling them.

You’re right, it will never happen though. Never.

Mally100 · 25/05/2022 04:56

So so tragic Those poor little babies and teacher. And the families left to deal with the devastation 😭. What is the solution here? I don't know. Making guns illegal? What happens to all those in circulation, or those can be sought in other illegal ways?

Hi @BritWifeInUSA
I've got two articles here for you to read as you seem to be confused about how gun would work.
Here's the first one about Japan

I know. And despite what the media says, most Americans DO support some measure of gun control. But here we fucking are.

Again.

SomersetONeil · 25/05/2022 04:57

Honestly, America is a back water now.

It really is.

A Wild West mentality, where people can shoot ip swathes of people. And women’s rights’ eroding.

It is not an example, or a leader, and in any way aspirational.

It is quite the opposite.

SomersetONeil · 25/05/2022 04:59

Parents can’t even get formula for their babies.

It is truly boggling how quickly it has declined in my lifetime.

@BritWifeInUSA
Here's the second one about Dunblane and how it made us tighten up gun control

SlowHorses · 25/05/2022 06:34

Sadly, I don’t think they’ll ever get a gun law change through in the US.

Trainbear · 25/05/2022 07:37

Americans have had the right to bear arms since 1776.
School shootings such as this did not start until the 1960s.
This suggests that guns are secondary to a primary cause. Mental health.

Calling for gun control (and doing nothing) is easier than tackling a huge mental health issue.

Bednobsbroomsticks · 25/05/2022 08:06

Anyone who advocates the right to carry guns has childrens blood on their hands.

No excuses
