No one is actually dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away

@butterpuffed hard to explain, best I can do is:
This is what it's like:
It's not like anything.
Think of something you didn't experience (maybe something that happened before you were born) and its like your experience of that.
Except not even because....you have knowledge that that thing did happen.
Maybe its better to say...it's like time skipped, and there's nothing in the middle.

Thank you for the explanation of your experience. So glad you recovered .

Of course people die.

They live on in the memories of their loved ones, but they are still well and truly dead.

MrsWooster · 25/05/2022 08:58

The pic’s a gesture for the SirTerry haters.
I’d completely missed the date but it’s my final chemo today so it feels particularly apt.
How do (I) rise up, rise up…

Do you know that a man is not dead while his name is still spoken?

In the books the newest communication technology was semaphore towers, used like telegrams. The people that owned them wanted to make money, the people that operated them LOVED them. When one of the operators died they passed his name back and forth across the system. GNU is an operators code that explains what to do with the message G=pass to the next tower, U=turn around at the end and N=nio logged. So the person would live forever with their name running up and down the system.

webweaverToo · 25/05/2022 08:59

Rise up! Rise up!

GNU Sir Terry Pratchett. I miss your books that never were...

Bollindger · 25/05/2022 09:01

Life force.
Think about it at some point in the making of a baby , life actually enters and the brain comes alive, senses start to work, also in death, that thing leaves a body and while medicine can keep the body alive there is no life force left.
That life force has to go somewhere, is this what reincarnation is?

ErrolTheDragon · 25/05/2022 09:02

To those asking what GNU means, here's an explanation.

Like the idea but no matter how many times I say DPs name, he’s still dead. I get that I carry his love with me but he’s not here to talk back to me, hug, kiss, cuddle or mend any of the things that go wrong in this damn house that he’d know how to do and I don’t.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 25/05/2022 09:02

There are some wet hens on here today.

WitchDancer · 25/05/2022 09:04

GNU Sir Terry Pratchett

Those that know wear lilac.

MsEverywhere · 25/05/2022 09:04

No - being alive and being remembered are not the same thin

This.

Well, it's not obvious from the thread title or the OP that this thread is for those au fait with the works of Terry Pratchett. You can't blame non-fans for missing that this is all a big in-joke/homage/whatever.

iloveeverykindofcat · 25/05/2022 09:07

@butterpuffed Thank you!

EatYourVegetables · 25/05/2022 09:09

Lots of misunderstanding here today, but those who know know.

Do you know that a man is not dead while his name is still spoken?

Do you think anyone doesn't actually know that?

It's a metaphor, and the thread is a memorial.

For those who unaccountably don't like or haven't read Sir PTs works, as well as being Lilac Day it's also Towel Day. And if you don't wish Douglas Adams could also have lived longer and written more ... well, your loss is greater than ours.

Is this not basically just the plot of Coco?

God, I live that film. Never pass up a chance to rewatch it ☺️
Remember me!

GNU PTerry

I shall wear Lilac today.

I too, have not read the Shepherd's Crown. I don't want to be in a world where there is no more Pratchett books left to read.

I'll pop a copy of The Truth in my handbag, for a lunch read.

Me neither.

And every time I think about it, I cry

It is just amazing how an author can mean so much.

True.

But a read of some of the posts before posting oneself often gives greater insight.

Feel free to read some of the thread...

ErrolTheDragon · 25/05/2022 09:12

Or just read the OP, the thread is obviously about something.

ENoeuf · 25/05/2022 09:13

It's nice you all have a love of this in common but maybe the title could make it clearer it's about a particular man and memorial? I was going to join in and mention Brian Patten but it's not that sort of thread.

aprofoundhistoricalnovalty · 25/05/2022 09:14

Alittlebitolderthanyou · 25/05/2022 09:18

No it’s not a FB sound. It’s a quote from Terry Pratchet….

Nanny0gg · 25/05/2022 09:11

True.

When I saw a reference to 'Sir Terry' the Sir Terry that leapt to mind was Sir Terry Wogan.
