To think the problem with Netflix is nothing ever finishes.

Everything has to have more than one bloody season. Nothing has an ending, just so the last drop cam be eeked out of an idea.

Just watched 'Pieces of her' and it is left unfinished, cue another season with no real content.
Bates Motel, dragged on until it was unwatchable

There are loads more, why can't there just be one series (not season) and have a conclusion?

The Queen's Gambit?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 23/05/2022 18:32

alias grace, or something like that, just one season
i agree with you and am struggling to think of anything else
oh
Queens Gambit

MrsLargeEmbodied · 23/05/2022 18:32

I May destroy you - not netflix so far

KermitlovesKeyLimePie · 23/05/2022 18:32

The Pentaverate.

CounsellorTroi · 23/05/2022 18:32

It's also really irritating when you really get into something on Netflix and it doesn't finish because the show got cancelled.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 23/05/2022 18:34

its a sin is now on netflix
as is Giri/Haji

however those did not start on netflix

Cocoandcleo · 23/05/2022 18:35

I feel like this is often an issue with American series in general, especially comedies. The US office, Friends, Parks and Recreation, The Simpsons, Stranger Things all dragged on (or are dragging on) far longer than they should have in my opinion.

Chikapu · 23/05/2022 18:36

Bates Motel, dragged on until it was unwatchable

That has nothing to do with Netflix though, they didn't make the series.
Google Netflix limited series and lots come up.

Sowingbees · 23/05/2022 18:41

I'm just starting 'Liar' and as a UK production I hope this will have a satisfactory ending. Will try the above thanks, but you are right that it is mainly those that do not start on Netflix that have a conclusion.

Troi I tend to get bored before they cancel but can see that would be annoying

Because with more series, it expands the mythology, the characters, the details, e.g. I wish dark Angel was long than three seasons, or the unit, was more seasons etc. Usually it adds more details to the universe that the show is based in.

Sowingbees · 23/05/2022 18:42

Chikapu my mistake, I want to say American drama but lots of UK stuff drags on.

OP posts:
Sowingbees · 23/05/2022 18:44

Hawkins I haven't seen Dark Angel, do you not think it risk being ruined by being overdone? I think I like it best when I still want to watch more.

Just look for things marked as a Limited Series - they're normally 4-8 episodes and done.

Nesbo · 23/05/2022 18:48

It’s down to economics. A long running tv series with a huge number of episodes is a goldmine as you can keep selling the old eps for as long as new seasons are produced, as they stay relevant. Once you’ve recouped the initial investment everything you make on the old seasons is pure profit - they become absolute cash cows that help to offset all the money lost on the other stuff that bombs!

Noonado · 23/05/2022 18:48

It’s not a problem that’s exclusive to Netflix by any means, but so it does annoy me when writers don’t know how any when to finish a show and go on flogging a dead horse. Most series can’t sustain an interesting, tight storyline past about 3 series; many can’t do it after 2.

I wish Handmaid’s Tale had ended where the book did. It was such a good adaptation, and I love the enigmatic ending. Instead it dragged on into increasingly ridiculous torture porn so I gave up after the second series.

Like Daybreak! And I'm not ok with this!

And EVERY BLOODY SERIES I FALL IN LOVE WITH!!

ChateauxNeufDePoop · 23/05/2022 18:52

I think that's TV series since the milennium barring a few exceptions though. If something is well received it doesn't make commercial sense to drop it at its peak of popularity but the flip side is then it dwindles in quality and gets criticised at the end. It's amazing how many US TV series went beyond 5 seasons after running out of ideas, (Dexter, Big Bang Theory, Suits, even The Sopranos, Homeland and 24). It often doesn't help they do a large number of episodes per series.

There's some good smaller size shows on Netflix but depends on your genres. Godless (Western), Punisher (violent vigilante), The Sinner (Crime), Stranger Things (Sci-Fantasy).

He gets a lot of stick for some things but fair play to Ricky Gervais for not flogging The Office (UK) and After Life to death despite there being the demand.

Sowingbees · 23/05/2022 18:53

I'd never heard of the term 'limited series' glad I posted this now.

Nesbo I guess if I look at it as milking the cash cow to give outliers a chance I can stomach it better.

I'm still salty that neither of these will get another season!

Sowingbees · 23/05/2022 18:57

NeufDePoop yes you are right, I'm routed firmly before the millennium, there are many older shows that I'd love them to discover an unbroadcast episode. Agree about Jervais, although it pains me.
I just feel the lack of ending ,or flogging of the horse, ruins the earlier episodes.

There's going to be a second series

Is there? I can't find anything about it.

Re: the OP, I think there's a difference between series where you can stop after 1 with a satisfactory conclusion regardless of more episodes later (like Russian Doll or True Detective) and those that are quite clearly just the first quarter or third of a story like Ozark or Better Call Saul.

DashboardConfessional · 23/05/2022 19:05

You know what does need to stop though? Walking Dead. That thing has been going for my entire 12 year marriage and they're launching about 15 spinoffs!
