To think the problem with Netflix is nothing ever finishes.

Everything has to have more than one bloody season. Nothing has an ending, just so the last drop cam be eeked out of an idea.

Just watched 'Pieces of her' and it is left unfinished, cue another season with no real content.
Bates Motel, dragged on until it was unwatchable

There are loads more, why can't there just be one series (not season) and have a conclusion?

It’s not a problem that’s exclusive to Netflix by any means, but so it does annoy me when writers don’t know how any when to finish a show and go on flogging a dead horse. Most series can’t sustain an interesting, tight storyline past about 3 series; many can’t do it after 2.

I wish Handmaid’s Tale had ended where the book did. It was such a good adaptation, and I love the enigmatic ending. Instead it dragged on into increasingly ridiculous torture porn so I gave up after the second series.

It's awful. It's now turned into fan fiction.

It's also really irritating when you really get into something on Netflix and it doesn't finish because the show got cancelled.

I felt this way about Ringer, though I'm sure many disagree 😂 it ended on a cliffhanger as well, so I never got closure

Lsquiggles · 23/05/2022 19:18

I agree! They either keep pumping out new seasons or leave things with many unanswered questions so they can rake back over it all a few years down the line with a new season/spin off.

The Sinner was the worst for this! Completely pointless 4th season with no closure to a major theme they mention constantly 🙄

Glad you said this. I started it and wasn't that into it so left it to come back to. But now I won't.

pastabest · 23/05/2022 20:44

If you are looking at Limited series on Netflix definitely watch MAID

Its beautiful and leaves you wanting a second series but knowing that its really important that there isn't one.

emerald1981 · 23/05/2022 20:44

I agree about Mindhunter. Would have loved another series

PollyEsther · 23/05/2022 20:46

Liar is awful, don't waste your time!

The Good Place is incredible, and I agree with the PP's - I'd rather they just bloody FINISH Mindhunter than kept making new series/seasons of utter shite.

Yes, Santa Clarita Diet just got good and then pooft gone, cancelled to never find out what happened grrrr

pointythings · 23/05/2022 20:48

I agree some things do drag on too long, but others have sensible endings: Sense8, Castlevania, Stranger Things (planned) for example. I'm going to wait and see what happens with The WItcher - so far they seem to be loosely following the books and I love it.

Manekinek0 · 23/05/2022 21:01

I prefer a lot of the Korean series as they are longer but tend to to be stand alone.

WarmSausageTea · 23/05/2022 21:06

If it’s not late for the OP, Liar is not worth the effort.

Nor is Behind Her Eyes. Absolute garbage.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 23/05/2022 21:09

I find this is generally true of all American shows. Much less so with British. And this was before Netflix too.

If a British broadcaster had made Lost (for example), it would have been over in 3 seasons, the ending would have been decided before episode 1 was ever written, and it would have gone down as an amazing show iconic of its time.

Instead, as I've found with most American series, it's a ratings game. No plot is decided for a fixed period. No concern is given to declining quality or story arcs etc.

piecesofham · 23/05/2022 21:55

The documentary/ true crime things annoy me on there too for being too drawn out to fill a whole season. Tiger King, Don't Fuck with Cats, Making a Murderer come to mind. I didn't finish any of them because I lost interest, they started really well but then got filled with fluff to fill them out to a longer series.
Game of Thrones isn't Netflix but also was a huge disappointment, rushed for the sake of it because it didn't end when it should have.
Mind you, as a pp mentioned Coronation Street etc a lot of those soaps are just rehashing the same. Old. Thing. Over and over with ever more far fetched storylines.
Whoever up there ^ mentioned The Sopranos must immediately desist though, that's madness! 😂

Hawkins001 · 23/05/2022 18:41

Because with more series, it expands the mythology, the characters, the details, e.g. I wish dark Angel was long than three seasons, or the unit, was more seasons etc. Usually it adds more details to the universe that the show is based in.

I wish dark angel stopped at one season. Second season ruined the show! So many mutants.

Have to admit I wasn't sure I wanted a s2 of Russian Doll but I actually enjoyed it.

I'm mad archive 81 was cancelled so quickly. Keep meaning to listen to the podcast for the rest of the story.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 23/05/2022 22:07

@girafferaffle I'm surprised people want a second series of Archive 81; I liked it but I liked the ending as it was.

What I didn't like was the weird way they decided parts of it were set in the 90s yet the only reason I knew that was because they verbally told me. The sets, clothing and hair were definitely NOT 90s!

Eeksteek · 23/05/2022 22:40

I was utterly furious about Ozark. It wasn’t kid-friendly viewing, and my kid doesn’t sleep, so I waited the ENTIRE summer holidays to watch the last one and it was a crappy non-ending so they could tag on another series, so I refused to watch it in protest. Good stories need endings.

OTOH, I’ve quite enjoyed The Crown, which doesn’t/won’t really have a neat conclusion. The Queen’s Gambit was the best thing I’ve seen in years. So there is good stuff on Netflix.

I must admit they did expand the mutants, but then I guess that would give more stories for the mutants, as series one pretty much explained max backstory, although pitty about some of the main ladies that were friends with max, was not in season two.

Danny should of been queen and jon snow the traitor, although the way it was seemed like the Dragon was going to the island with the other red priestess, and I'm guessing to resurrect danny.

Hawkins001 · 23/05/2022 22:45

Another show that needed a series two / 3 was the tomorrow people, but the most recent version of the show.

ChateauxNeufDePoop · 23/05/2022 18:52

I think that's TV series since the milennium barring a few exceptions though. If something is well received it doesn't make commercial sense to drop it at its peak of popularity but the flip side is then it dwindles in quality and gets criticised at the end. It's amazing how many US TV series went beyond 5 seasons after running out of ideas, (Dexter, Big Bang Theory, Suits, even The Sopranos, Homeland and 24). It often doesn't help they do a large number of episodes per series.

There's some good smaller size shows on Netflix but depends on your genres. Godless (Western), Punisher (violent vigilante), The Sinner (Crime), Stranger Things (Sci-Fantasy).

He gets a lot of stick for some things but fair play to Ricky Gervais for not flogging The Office (UK) and After Life to death despite there being the demand.

Punisher has moved to Disney plus now.

I'm really enjoying the eyecandy series. But it is not for those of a delicate disposition.

Sowingbees · 23/05/2022 18:44

Hawkins I haven't seen Dark Angel, do you not think it risk being ruined by being overdone? I think I like it best when I still want to watch more.

I Understand your perspectives, but with dark Angel it's nice to have more stories and development with the characters, like supernatural, 15 seasons, even if in parts it's jumped the shark, it's still nice to have a lot of episodes to watch with those characters ect

Hawkins001 · 23/05/2022 22:49

We need a revenge spin off, and another season of homeland

LilythePunk · 23/05/2022 22:53

Well.. I’ve just finished watching Godless. Seven episodes, one season only. It’s absolutely brilliant. Loved every minute.

Neverendingdust · 23/05/2022 23:04

Agree OP.

It’s cheese on toast but Zoo pissed me off. The first season was good, the other two just got more ridiculous and then the last episode was a cliffhanger only for me to discover it has been cancelled!?! 🤬

Into the night season 1 is great, season 2 is ok I expect season 3 will be ridiculous

iex · 23/05/2022 23:10

DashboardConfessional · 23/05/2022 19:05

You know what does need to stop though? Walking Dead. That thing has been going for my entire 12 year marriage and they're launching about 15 spinoffs!

Huh hmmm greys anatomy....

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind1 · 23/05/2022 18:51

There's going to be a second series

Is there?

I don't know whether to be excited or disappointed. It was perfect as it is
