I've just joined in order to report a video about one of my kids.

This is a dark and evil place that no teenager should be on.

What nasty little shits kids can be. Get your children off it, for their safety and mental health, and for that of others.

My kids aren't on it but I am seriously shocked as to how vile children are to each other. Please please stop your kids.

My youngest did the age appropriate sex ed at school last term.

Then several of the girls started saying that XX had also told them the penis went into boys mouths/girls bottoms. School had a flood of Mother's complaining what was being said to the girls. We all raised safeguarding issues. Boy also started calling kids 'dirty gays.'

Turns out the well spoken, older Dad, who wants to be his kids mate rather than his parent had allowed him on TikTok without any restrictions. Son had searched and found- well, you can guess.....

I think parents are very naïve about all social media. We’ve got WhatsApp with very strict rules and even then there’s been stuff to deal with - year 7 a distant df of dd1 announcing she was going to commit suicide (as a parent I hardly knew how to deal with that so my 12 year old certainly didn’t know) and a video disguised as a makeup tutorial that turned into hardcore porn sent to Dd by a boy to the class WhatsApp in Year 9.

So much bullying on Tiktok and Snapchat. Dd is about to start Year 10 and has Instagram but mostly follows dogs. I know I can’t keep her from social media forever so we talk about it. I think at 14 she’s ready and we have a good relationship where she’s proven she’ll come to us if things go wrong. My 10yos are fairly sensible but I don’t want them to have to deal with it if I’m honest. Knowing 2 teen suicides (friends of each other 3 months apart) I’m open with my dc about my concerns and don’t apologise.

The algorithm for your fyp shows you the things you've clicked on and are interested in...so if you're getting shown bullying, kids etc...then you're clicking or watching it. Tiktok has some great things on it...if you or your kids end up watching bad stuff...🤔

@Lennybenny I wasn't even 'on' TikTok and the sick goat video still popped up. Certainly don't make a habit of searching for that sort of content! I should probably just be grateful it wasn't a person.

Haven't read the full thread but yeah, YABU to think you're the only one that has thought this, and YANBU to say it....I've already told mine how some kids have died doing tiktok challenges and it is banned, and they do not touch it.

Yanbu it's banned in my house totally inappropriate for children it's vile.

Actually been rather helpful in my household.

I think it depends on what you like and what you search for.
I use ds’s account and it is all puppies and kittens and diy and storage tips.
Nevwr had any mysogynistic or bullying type videos or anything else that would be considered vile.

People on here are underestimating the aggressiveness of the TikTok algorithm - a point made in the Guardian article. You only need to pause on a video for a few seconds before being recommended more content. It’s a platform rife with misogyny and promotes it to young men who sign up.
