Get your kids off TIKTOK. It's evil

Codswallop20 · 22/05/2022 19:49

I've just joined in order to report a video about one of my kids.

This is a dark and evil place that no teenager should be on.

What nasty little shits kids can be. Get your children off it, for their safety and mental health, and for that of others.

My kids aren't on it but I am seriously shocked as to how vile children are to each other. Please please stop your kids.

yes but the utube shorts are not bad like ticktock and i am happy to not see a woman be mangled on there

ouch321 · 22/05/2022 22:38

Agree with you OP.

No kids myself but if I did they would not be permitted on it till late teens.

The thing is that of the posters on this thread who are making you out to be an idiot or over-reacting or whatnot, I'll bet a proportion are parents of the kids who are doing the bullying...

I know I'm not an idiot. You are probably right. But so many kids are on there and their parents haven't a bloody clue what's going on.

I know it's not JUST tiktok and there are plenty of other horrid things out there but what worries me is how people view it as harmless!

Thanks for posting OP. I'm so sorry you saw your child being bullied there.

ventreàterre · 22/05/2022 22:46

Some social media sites do seem to be worse than others. Of course it's some of the people on it who are the problem, and of course not all of it's bad, but it's not hysterical to realise that some sites have serious potential to be dangerous or damaging to young minds.

Rosebel · 22/05/2022 22:52

My 15 year old is on TicTok and it doesn't seem to be worse than anything else. She watches videos and quite often will share them with me or her dad.
Not seen any awful bullying on there.

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 22/05/2022 22:53

This article is an interesting read.

I remember I downloaded Tik Tok during the first lockdown, I was pregnant and bored. After a few minutes of scrolling a video of a dog falling into the water with crocodiles came up - I quickly went off and deleted it and never downloaded it again. I know what the outcome clearly was as there was no human around to help it, genuinely can’t get it out of my head! Horrible platform.

I got freaked out when a male acquaintance of mine told me he likes watching dancing clips on there, aren't a lot of them under 18? He is 32.

The demographic has recently changed. Most users are now 30 plus, and are moving over from Instagram. I suspect it won't be long before the kids move onto something else.

DoorWasAJar · 22/05/2022 22:55

YANBU tiktok is vile

theemperorhasnoclothes · 22/05/2022 22:58

We've banned tiktok. Not only for the concerns about grooming, bullying etc but because tiktok gathers far more data on its users than other social media sites and there are a lot of concerns about data security.

Backtoblack1 · 22/05/2022 22:59

It’s vile.

CorneliaMarie · 22/05/2022 23:05

I don’t go on there and naively hadn’t caught on people video others and post with captions - WTAF!?

I really think there needs to be mobile phone jammers or something in schools.

vinoandbrie · 22/05/2022 23:06

It’s awful, totally agree with you OP.

wallpoppy · 22/05/2022 23:06

Weird, I only ever see gentle clever surreal comedy, cooking, gardening, people who live in interesting places like Arctic islands or Amazonian jungles, and history/nature stuff from museums and animal sanctuaries. I think what your algorithm shows you says a lot about who you are as a person, OP.

Starlightstarbright1 · 22/05/2022 23:11

There is some awful stuff on there but also some stuff that entertains.

My ds was belly laughing at avyoutube video today... not bullying. It was on main Tv..He is a teen, i loved seeing what made him smile.. None of the platforms are all good or all bad.. this one included

Did you even read the OP? What an unpleasant thing to say, bordering on a personal attack really. You seem to have missed that OP was looking into her child having a nasty video made and put up about them. I imagine that explains OP's algorithm don't you?

Passedmybedtime · 22/05/2022 23:20

Some kids are vile and don't need tic toc for that, bullying is the scurge that's been happening long before social media came along, social media just makes it more widely known.
I dont think young kids should have it though, as it could impact their futures if they do something stupid on it, but bullying is a no go and any kid caught doing it should be removed from the site
I dont have tic toc but sometimes videos do show up on facebook and the amount of silliness posted by so called adults is it any wonder the kids act the way they do.

English is not my first language, I realise now it sounds like I was accusing op of something but I wasn’t. I was just saying you see what you go on there to see and for most people who aren’t vile bullies they won’t see anything like that at all. It’s not a vile place any more than any other social media, it’s just unfortunately what was used to bully her kid. If it was two years ago it would have been Snapchat, or Instagram five years before that, or MySpace if it was 2004. Blaming the platform isn’t going to solve her problem.

Tonty · 22/05/2022 23:22

I genuinely have never seen any bullying on TikTok. I only ever see videos of people dancing, and cute babies eating all their food. Sometimes stand-up comics. Anything that looks remotely 'dark' I swipe immediately so I think I've developed a really good algorithm that only ever yields nice stuff for me to view.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 22/05/2022 23:29

So if your kids aren't on it, how did you find out there was a video about one of your kids?
My dc isn't on it, so he would never know if someone talked about him on it. And I wouldn't just join to report, I would report to school, if I found out my dc was a target of an internet bullying.

Readtheroom · 22/05/2022 23:33

Codswallop20 · 22/05/2022 19:55

And how does one do that when everything is anonymous? I'm thankful my kids aren't on it.

There is stuff on there that could push kids to commit suicide. And probably does.

I assumed these were people your kids knew. I suggest making a rule that they cant contact strangers for this reason

user1471474462 · 22/05/2022 23:42

I think the issue is, well one of them at least, is that most adults will see an upsetting/dark video and skip it. The algorithm then adjusts and you are less likely to see those types of videos again.

If your an 8 year old you might be curious, you might watch that video, once maybe twice, it upsets you but your hooked. The algorithm then starts to suggest more dark or inappropriate videos and your stuck.

Kids lie, it’s natural, giving them access to ticktok is honestly bonkers.

Oldfilmsareshit · 22/05/2022 23:45

You ‘don’t allow’ your 16 year old to access it?? They’re almost an adult. I’m not surprised your kids are being targeted (although it’s obviously horrendously wrong) if this is your parenting style

Kite22 · 22/05/2022 23:58

CoastalWave · 22/05/2022 22:19

Whilst that is obviously tragic, crossing the road is bloody dangerous.

My kids are much younger and I regularly talk to them about how NOT to do stupid shit just because someone else is.

Being in your own home and being unaware that bleach can be fatal is a dangerous thing.

Educate your kids. My Tik Tok is full of funny/cute animal videos, caligraphy, and cake decoration, That's pretty much all I get shown. If you're seeing shit, it's because your kids looked for it.

This ^

But the issue here isn't TikTok, it is why a parent is allowing their 8 yr old to be on social media.

YANBU.

Social media is completely banned in my house. It's a bullies dream.

Do you have teenagers? I would like to ban social media too but I am not sure how I'd go about it.
