Get your kids off TIKTOK. It's evil

Codswallop20 · 22/05/2022 19:49

I've just joined in order to report a video about one of my kids.

This is a dark and evil place that no teenager should be on.

What nasty little shits kids can be. Get your children off it, for their safety and mental health, and for that of others.

My kids aren't on it but I am seriously shocked as to how vile children are to each other. Please please stop your kids.

There is some good stuff on tiktok. I do find that the fast paced dopamine hits destroy my attention span if I stay of there for too long.

As for the bullying, it isn't just tiktok. It's across all platforms. Back when we were kids it was msn messenger. Instagram is awful, recently some kids at DCs school found an open to view teachers Facebook profile and pulled all the pictures. They then used these to set up a fake Instagram profile and did a little photoshopping and wrote some interesting descriptions.

GirlCrushxxx · 22/05/2022 20:13

Yep @WeDontShutUpAboutBruno mine is as well!

MayDaze · 22/05/2022 20:13

I'm on it and all I get is silly bids of animals, body positive posts and life hacks. It's a nice tonic to the putrid Facebook.

I suppose it's not necessarily about the site, but what the children are doing on it. Banning it makes it more alluring. Maybe people should teach their children how to behave online.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 22/05/2022 20:16

I think posters are ignoring the information about you reporting a video made about your child.
OP, my daughter is also being bullied, both online and face to face in school. I understand how helpless you must feel and this post is probably a way of you trying to process and deal with it.

my daughter removed social media from her phone, the death threats are being dealt with by the police and I’m in the process of hopefully transferring her to a different school for a fresh start.

I hope your child gets some peace soon.

Sleepingsatellite1 · 22/05/2022 20:17

A mum in America is apparently suing them because her daughter died doing one of the ‘challenges’ people put on there, I’m not sure of the law surrounding this but she was 10/11 and the age for sign up is supposed to be 13 I think. Either way that’s an awful thing to happen and shows it can be a dangerous site.

MistyRuins · 22/05/2022 20:17

I've not seen any bullying on TikTok. I think it's algorithms give you videos similar to/watched by the same people as the videos you go on to see, so if you went there to look for that, you'll get more of the same.

I've seen plenty of bullying videos on Facebook though.

Your poor daughter, I hope she gets the fresh start she deserves 💐

Odd. I signed up some months ago and haven't seen anything of what you describe.
I've seen a LOT of drivel. I realise it isn't aimed at my age group. There really is a LOT of nonsense on there. But there are ways people can bully on any platform.
As a pp said, it isn't the platform that is evil, it is the behaviour of whoever is doing the bullying,

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 22/05/2022 20:24

I’m somehow on FrogTok.

At least ten videos a day of frogs.

pointythings · 22/05/2022 20:24

What on earth are you all looking for? My adult DC all have TikTok and get an awful lot of support around mental health, disability and the fact that they are gay. It's like anything else - a tool, and what it does is dependent on how you use it.

itsgettingweird · 22/05/2022 20:25

It's the humans who are evil.

No one functioning as a normal human being would do half the stuff we see let alone post it online.

But because it's a picture on a screen they don't equate what the are doing as reality.

We need FAR better education at a young age around the dangers of the internet and far better parenting from parents who just say "well everyone else is on it"

macey011 · 22/05/2022 20:25

I'm on TikTok and I've not seen any bullying... the algorithm will show you what you look for of course.

Onwards22 · 22/05/2022 20:25

There is a lot of vile things on the internet.
I feel sorry for this generation.

Theres a minimum age for things like tik tok but it’s still very important to teach our kids about internet trolls and catfishes.

itsgettingweird · 22/05/2022 20:26

Sorry should add some humans on the internet!

Tim Tim etc wouldn't be so bad if it didn't have people who are evil humans using it.

Legrandsophie · 22/05/2022 20:27

As a teacher I see TikTok as a curse. The number of serious safeguarding incidents we have had because of it is insane and yet parents are willing to let their kids just stare onto it all day, which is why we can’t get their phones off them to do any work. I teach some kids who are so addicted that their phones that they can’t go a minute without looking at it.

And TikTok is so bad because it so influences their behaviour directly. The challenges are viral and nearly always either dangerous or encourage sexual assault. The place is absolutely ripe with misogyny- no wonder teenagers have such difficulty these days with mental health. They being literally farmed for likes and view by an algorithm so that they don’t know which way is up!

Veryverycalmnow · 22/05/2022 20:27

It's not suitable for kids.

tabulahrasa · 22/05/2022 20:28

The algorithm shows you what it thinks you’re interested in based on how long you watch certain videos, how you interact and who you’re connected to.

I get Dog’s, foals, Tudor history, Jane Austen and linguists... for a while I was getting people making tallow which was a bit odd admittedly and I do get lesbians quite often, I assume because I move straight on from men doing weird stuff that’s clearly supposed to be attractive so I must be gay, lol.

But if you get a lot porn it’s because you’re watching it when it comes up tbh, if it’s just the occasional one, it’s likely someone you’re connected to is watching lots of it. That’s pretty much how it works.

tulips27 · 22/05/2022 20:29

I got freaked out when a male acquaintance of mine told me he likes watching dancing clips on there, aren't a lot of them under 18? He is 32.

I agree, they need to know what could be fake, extorting etc. Again I was just reading about a teen who has killed himself because someone posing as a girl his age got chatting to him, sent a nude and asked for one back, after he sent his they started blackmailing him for money he didn’t have and threatening to post his picture on the internet so he took his own life.

GoodJanetBadJanet · 22/05/2022 20:34

I completely understand you don't want your teens on there (I have two) but you could say the same about any social media.
People can upload or chat all kinds of shit to YouTube, FB messenger, Snapchat etc.
Also another saying WTF to what are people searching/looking at?!
Recommended to you usually goes on algorithms (content you like looking at/similar stuff you've searched for/followed.)
I joined when my teens did as I like to know about what they're on.
I've only really been on a few times.
I get shown stuff like couples doing the final lift from Dirty Dancing at their wedding, Ross and Monica The Routine impersonations, Greatest Showman flash dances, and mummy bloggers dancing round their kitchen 😂

Zwellers · 22/05/2022 20:34

It's not North Korea op. I feel sorry for your children if you are this controlling

anotherNCsorryfolks · 22/05/2022 20:36

YANBU.

Social media is completely banned in my house. It's a bullies dream.

GoodJanetBadJanet · 22/05/2022 20:37

In all seriousness though, there are some awful things out there on social media and when it comes to mid teens though there's not much you can do apart from drill into them/educate them on the dangers/appropriate use or ban them from going on.

Annoyedandirritated · 22/05/2022 20:37

I love it but I only ever see comedy videos

Codswallop20 · 22/05/2022 20:39

GirlCrushxxx · 22/05/2022 20:00

Your kids will just access it in other ways

They won't 'stay off it' not when it's so popular. You've just pushed them into being secretive about it

It has its uses like most things

My kids are not interested and I am bloody glad.

It was someone outside of my household that told me there was something on there about one of my kids.
