To expect coronation chicken sandwiches at the jubilee party?

So DH and I are on the Jubilee party committee for our street. We are actually in charge of the bunting, balloons, decorations and other accoutrements.

Anyway, DH said at the meeting today that 'It would be inappropriate for there not to be coronation chicken sandwiches' at the party. This was met with uproar by the other committee members (a retired primary school teacher, two retired nurses, three SAHM, and 23-year old male who hopes to be a local councillor at the next elections for some reason). They said that coronation chicken was a colonial throwback, and therefore will not be served at the party.

DH and I said that we liked coronation chicken and so does HMTQ. We then suggested that maybe we shouldn't get union jack bunting as it might also be perceived as colonial?

Anyway, what do you think we should do? DH and I REALLY like coronation chicken. Should we resign?

@LovelyJubbly1234

I'm wondering where the Committee stand on gin & Indian tonic? Is it permissible to drink it or should we all be drinking gin & dandelion and burdock now? (Asking for a friend)

Obviously you have to have the official trifle - HMQ will be extremely disappointed if you don't.

And tell us more about the bunting and other accoutrements you're in charge of. You need to make sure you're appropriately patriotic without it being tacky - it's a tricky balance.

The whole jubilee thing is colonial.

You're either comfortable with that or you're not.

Hint - Most non-racists who dislike rich men taking advantage of underage girls aren't comfortable with that.

Bollocks! Bring your own Coronation Chicken and flaunt it. I bet lots of people will want some. I would.

Mmmm colonial chicken

If we're in Norfolk does that mean we can't to Scotch eggs, Yorkshire pudding or Lancvashire hotpot? Damn, back to the drawing board!

SleeplessInEngland · 23/05/2022 14:24

Troll thread.

How is a Victoria sponge a colonial dish?

Well, it’s literally named for the Empress of India, so……..

Giveaschitt · 23/05/2022 14:53

Ah, fond memories of when our local Spar had them labelled as 'Coronation Street Sandwiches' and it was hard to tell if it was someone taking the piss, or someone who genuinely thought that's what they were called....

OP should totally set up her own speakeasy for the occassion. Serving Pimms and coronation chicken sandwiches. The sandwiches should all have little flags with photos of the Coronation St cast!

CulturePigeon · 23/05/2022 15:10

Pahaha! 'Colonial throwback'. That committee sounds fun.

God I hope to never live on a street like yours

Our street party is discouraging anything red white and blue.

At ours we will be avoiding any mention of the Queen or the extended Royal family. Just to be on the safe side……..

I only tried coronation chicken for the first time this year. I thought it sounded rank which is why I hadn't bothered before. It was bloody lovely.

Well, it’s literally named for the Empress of India, so……..

Victorian terraced housing - colonial

Victorian dress - colonial

Victorian engineering - colonial

Victoria plumb - colonial

erm no it doesnt work like that, something isnt colonial just because it was named after someone who also happened to be head of state of a number of colonies.

Otherwise everything Dutch, Portguese, French, Spanish (pancakes, port, pox and flu) would also be colonial.

Same here, I came to coronation chicken late in middle age. I love it now, particularly the more luminous yellow versions.

I have no words for the miseries whinging about a street party. I like Coronation chicken as well so would happily attend any party serving it.

Here is a Diamond Jubilee corgi planter for your delectation. Try not to be too revolted by it, monarchy, dogs, jubilee. All the things most hated by by MN.

Come on, this can't be real.

Soffit · 23/05/2022 19:30

I will be having that chicken dish. I am having a bit of a fit about the trifle though. How can I make a decent veggie jelly? I find that agar doesn't quite produce the right consistency. My DCs hate trifle but I feel that I must make it anyway.

bellac11 · 23/05/2022 19:30

Thread rather ruined by people not playing along and either asking 'is this for real' or 'are you British' or asking if OP is a troll!!

mumonthehill · 23/05/2022 19:31

How to divide a village, put on a Jubilee party!! You should see our village fb page, full of veiled animosity and divisions.!

Yeah, if it actually existed.

Ocado had a Coronation Chicken Scotch Egg. It’s sold out and I am bereft.

Carpedimum · 23/05/2022 19:56

Please, please confirm you are taking the piss @LovelyJubbly1234 I suspect you are frustrated by the lack of knowledge about what the monarchy is all about. I’m astonished by some of these posts.
