To expect coronation chicken sandwiches at the jubilee party?

So DH and I are on the Jubilee party committee for our street. We are actually in charge of the bunting, balloons, decorations and other accoutrements.

Anyway, DH said at the meeting today that 'It would be inappropriate for there not to be coronation chicken sandwiches' at the party. This was met with uproar by the other committee members (a retired primary school teacher, two retired nurses, three SAHM, and 23-year old male who hopes to be a local councillor at the next elections for some reason). They said that coronation chicken was a colonial throwback, and therefore will not be served at the party.

DH and I said that we liked coronation chicken and so does HMTQ. We then suggested that maybe we shouldn't get union jack bunting as it might also be perceived as colonial?

Anyway, what do you think we should do? DH and I REALLY like coronation chicken. Should we resign?

I like Coronation Chicken. I saw the procession from a stand in Hyde Park.

I'm disappointed there aren't more witty replies to this thread.... and I'm just in from work and tired and unable to think of any so will just placemark and hope the comedy gold of MN will take off in the next 20 minutes

Confused Well, I still buy Coronation Chicken sandwiches from the Coop for lunch when I am not pretending to diet, are the Coop also peddling colonialism now? Invite me and I will smuggle some in for you.

Coronation chicken is rank. I didn't even know it still existed. I thought they stop making it in the early 2000s.

Oh I'm partial to it. Never tried it before I moved to the UK but once I'd had a mouthful of curried chicken, flaked almonds and mango chutney I was in.

Why would anyone want chicken with raisins? Shame on you

Undertheoldlindentree · 21/05/2022 22:15

Who holds the authority on this committee?

It's not a nice sandwich, just let it go, move on, get with the times

How can Coronation Chicken be colonial when it was created by Constance Spry?
Constance was in charge of the designs of the floral arrangements for the coronation, and also became involved with the discussions about the menu for the guests (there was probably A Committee! ) where ideas for cold dishes were being discussed.

Constance came up with the idea of a cold chicken & mayonnaise dish with a mild curry flavour, Coronation Chicken. 🍗🍗🍗 👑👑👑 🍗🍗🍗

Are the Co-op also peddling colonialism now?
Well, we will know if they change their name to Home & Colonial! Wink Wink

It doesn't have raisins in it, you animal!

I bloody love it. I hate the RF unfortunately and union flag bunting used to be a good sign that a pub was NF or BNP in the olden days so that's out.

I'll just make myself a vat and sit at home eating it.

FrangipaniBlue · 21/05/2022 22:42

I feel like I just read a script from a Little Britain sketch.

scrivette · 21/05/2022 22:43

Coronation Chicken was invented for the Coronation? Everyday is a school day on Mumsnet.

I like Coronation Chicken but have to pick out the raisins - so maybe I don't really like it.

Squirrelblanket · 21/05/2022 22:44

I have just laughed out loud to this thread. Thanks OP. 😂😂😂😂

TheRookie · 21/05/2022 22:44

What kind of street do you live on? I've never lived anywhere that woulf have a street party! Never mind a COMMITTEE about a Street party!

LowlandLucky · 21/05/2022 22:46

I will be flying the flag and bunting, we will be serving Coronation chicken and Victoria sponge, please feel free to pop round for a cuppa if you find yourself in our little corner of Scotland. Proud of my country and my flag and the jubilee t shirt i bought from Tesco this morning.

Georgeskitchen · 21/05/2022 22:46

What a shame that people can't even have a little but of fun after the long lockdowns, restrictions, cost of living/fuel crisis without some miserable fuckers spoiling it spouting off about things that happened in the past which we can't change.
What narrow minded misery must be the lives of the professional offence takers

sweetliketoxic · 21/05/2022 22:46

I think YANBU in respect of wanting to do something traditional, given the whole jubilee concept is also traditional.

However, is Coronation Chicken that fucked up yellow shit with curry and brown sugar in it? If so, YABU to suggest traumatising other people with that stuff.

Pandarinio · 21/05/2022 22:46

It's also not inclusive of those with nut allergies

EinsteinaGogo · 21/05/2022 22:47

I love that you are 'Minister in charge of accoutrements".

So middle class 🤩

TheGoogleMum · 21/05/2022 22:47

I think coronation chicken sandwiches is very appropriate for a jubilee party. I like it as a sandwich filling though! I dont see how a sandwich is too colonial but other ways of celebrating the royals isn't?

Very sadly I live on exactly the kind of street that is having a street party. They've already had a committee meeting. There is a fb messenger group to co-ordinate arrangements.

I have arranged to be out that day.
