To expect coronation chicken sandwiches at the jubilee party?

So DH and I are on the Jubilee party committee for our street. We are actually in charge of the bunting, balloons, decorations and other accoutrements.

Anyway, DH said at the meeting today that 'It would be inappropriate for there not to be coronation chicken sandwiches' at the party. This was met with uproar by the other committee members (a retired primary school teacher, two retired nurses, three SAHM, and 23-year old male who hopes to be a local councillor at the next elections for some reason). They said that coronation chicken was a colonial throwback, and therefore will not be served at the party.

DH and I said that we liked coronation chicken and so does HMTQ. We then suggested that maybe we shouldn't get union jack bunting as it might also be perceived as colonial?

Anyway, what do you think we should do? DH and I REALLY like coronation chicken. Should we resign?

Will there be cheese and cucumber sandwiches? 😉

GreatCuppa · 22/05/2022 07:34

I hate coronation chicken.

Favouritefruits · 22/05/2022 07:40

Where do the committee stand on a Victoria sponge?

torquewench · 22/05/2022 07:51

Mmm coronation chicken and Victoria sponge 🥰😋

Sparklingbrook · 22/05/2022 08:01

Coronation Chicken is horrible. This thread is funny though. Such angst about a picnic.

queenmeadhbh · 22/05/2022 08:25

This is like something out of Adrian Mole. Is England really like this? Committees for royal street parties?! Is that normal/common or is the OP in the minority?

I sincerely hope they don't!

That would be an insult to Her Late Imperial Majesty, not to mention a shocking waste!

Coronation chicken is rank. I didn't even know it still existed. I thought they stop making it in the early 2000s.

Agree, it's basically vomit in a sandwich

No. My street's one is essentially "let's all meet in the turning circle for a picnic". My work one is basically one person's decisions - no democracy there Grin

Um. Is this a parody thread? (I'm not British)

I am and I'm wondering.

LordEmsworth · 22/05/2022 08:42

Presumably all the cakes will be sugar-free and they're banning black pepper or any other imported spices, given that those were the currency of colonialism?

miroo · 22/05/2022 08:46

I bloody love Coronation Chicken sandwiches.

<misses point entirely>

InChocolateWeTrust · 22/05/2022 08:47

There are lots of jubilee celebrations planned where we live. English village and tbh it's any excuse for a street party/fete, isnt it.

Fully expecting union jack bunting throughout and swathes of coronation chicken. It's just food, it's all in good spirits.

Oblomov22 · 22/05/2022 08:49

I love coronation chicken. But this whole thing is ridiculous.

InChocolateWeTrust · 22/05/2022 08:50

Ps will be fucked off if no one does a victoria sponge but dont know anyone doing the jubilee pudding thing off the telly

SunshineLollipopsAndRainbows · 22/05/2022 08:51

My DD’s foster carer made the most delicious Coronation Chicken I have ever had. I could have eaten the whole bowl! Definitely take your own OP & sod the committee!

But your street is having one?! I meant is having a royal street party normal in England? I’ve only read about it when there was a royal wedding street party in diary of Adrian mole Grin

(I’m from Belfast…so I guess streets covered in flags has a sliiiiightly different connotation here)

in fact I’ve just remembered that last time there was something like this (10 years ago?) sainsburys head office sent a load of union flag badges and bunting and general decorations to the sainsburys in the west Belfast and the manager was like…I can’t even take this out of the box never mind ask my staff to wear it there will be a riot

donkeymcdonkface · 22/05/2022 08:55

On a side note, the Hairy Bikers coronation chicken is delicious..........

Hallyup89 · 22/05/2022 08:56

Bloody hell, it's a chicken sandwich. How has it descended into this?!

Absolutely nothing wrong with it.

Terfydactyl · 22/05/2022 08:57

I'm sad my street isnt having a party and does not have a committee.
All that said I love coronation chicken, minus the raisins, but
What about the vegetarians and vegans, why not some coronation chickpea also minus the raisins but using vegan mayo of course.
Maybe that has less colonialist vibes?

ThinWomansBrain · 22/05/2022 08:58

it's dickish to think this is your red line: your hot-under-the-collar, stooshie-with-the-neighbours, up-with-this-we-will-not-put, hill-to-die-on.

most sane people would be looking for any excuse to get out of committee meetings about a street party.

Coronation chicken looks like vomit.

Limer · 22/05/2022 09:01

Coronation chicken is delicious, but you can't have it at a Jubilee party. The clue's in the name.

rodham · 22/05/2022 09:02

There is absolutely no way on earth that anybody involved in the planning of a jubilee party would have the faintest interest in colonialism.

Well done OP, great thread

Newmumatlast · 22/05/2022 09:02

bellac11 · 21/05/2022 21:24

And those same people expect no food at all to be comprised from anything that was gleaned from other countries during Imperial expansion...... so no tea, coffee, chocolate, potatoes and tomatoes (from Spanish colonialism, might get away with it), no rice, no curried anything....

the list is endless

This is the issue isnt it. I get the point the committee members are making but at some stage you have to think my goodness, be consistent. If they were then they would all resign and not support an event to celebrate the monarchy to be honest given the connection to colonisation.
