Cheeky Fucker - Group Gift

TulaOfDarkWater · 19/05/2022 18:06

Friendship group of six. One member has a birthday coming up & the other five people decided to get together & buy her a big ticket item.

Site A sells the item for £500 so £100 per person, everyone agreed & was happy with this.

Site B has a deluxe version for £700 so £140 per person, everyone agreed this was out of budget & unanimously decided to go with the £500 option from site A.

Just before the item could be purchased, a member of the group, let’s call her Anne, said she had a 20% off voucher for site B which was due to expire soon & it would be silly to waste it so how about we use it to buy the deluxe version & pay a little extra as birthday girl has had a shitty time of it lately etc.

In the group chat, we discussed:

£700 - 20% = £560

£560 / 5 = £112 per person

Anne thumbs up emoji liked this message!

Everyone agreed they could stretch to the £12 extra & it was decided that we would buy the deluxe item from Site B. The ONLY reason we agreed to this was due to the discount voucher, everyone was happy to purchase from site A otherwise.

Anne purchased the item using the voucher & sent everyone her bank details asking for £140. When this was queried, Anne said the 20% voucher represented her 1/5 contribution & so everyone else owes £140.

  1. Anne knows the reason the £700 option was vetoed in the first place was because everyone - including Anne - agreed £140 was out of budget
  1. At no time did Anne say the 20% voucher was her contribution & the rest of us had to pay full price. Another member of the group had the exact same voucher & we could have used hers if we had known
  1. There are text messages where the group discussed the maths & agreed to £12 extra each & Anne did not dispute this & in fact thumbs up emoji’d it. Her excuse for this is she didn’t read the messages properly, the thumbs up was a mistake / she didn’t do it deliberately / know it was there & she is bad at maths anyway so tuned out!

So am I being unreasonable to think Anne is a cheeky fucker & deliberately mislead us? If we had stuck to the original plan then Anne would have had to pay £100 but this way she pays nothing & the rest of us an extra £40!!

Just to be clear, this voucher was one of those promotional email ones that are sent to those on the company’s mailing list, it wasn’t a voucher that had any monetary value or was a gift to her which would be different & like I said, another member had the exact same voucher which she was happy for us to use instead if we had known this is what Anne was doing.

YABU. I cant believe you've made this public.

As I have used o.2 of my data (which I pay 15 a month for) to reply I expect this reimbursed.

Screenshot her thumbs up to the £112 and tell her that's what you will all be transferring.

Don't let this woman take the piss.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 19/05/2022 19:33

Presumably you are all friends with Anne and have known her for some time to even be in on an expensive gift so she's unlikely to have suddenly decided to rip the rest of you off.

However stupid it is I'm guessing she genuinely didnt think she was doing anyhing wrong

Best solution is to return it, she's paido for the wholeamount so has no leverage with the group at all. Has she always been a bit thick?

HenBob · 19/05/2022 19:33

Fucking hell, cheeky fucker indeed - this raised my heart rate! Please can everyone just send £112 and tell her to fuck off!

You are all very generous friends already!

SomersetONeil · 19/05/2022 19:34

Anyway. @TulaOfDarkWater - you’ve now had lots of responses to your thread.

What are you going to do?

AnneDeluxe · 19/05/2022 19:34

SomersetONeil · 19/05/2022 19:33

It’s clearly just a joke!

This is no laughing matter.

Wee Hoblein over there has their hans full with all these sham posters.

ElenaSt · 19/05/2022 19:35

All agree to send her the amount less 20% and don't engage any further on the subject.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 19/05/2022 19:35

HansHoblein · 19/05/2022 19:30

Eh? You've gone to the trouble of setting up a username to pretend to be Anne? Quite sad

Are you new? That is as old as the hills, it not sad 😂

The fact Hans thinks this woman is actually called Anne is what made me laugh.

Still not convinced they're not anne. We will sniff them out with suggestions of lavish gifts.

The OP even says - in the OP - ‘let’s call her Anne’.

Cheeky cow. Transfer the £112 as agreed and say that’s your limit.

BellePeppa · 19/05/2022 19:38

Sexnotgender · 19/05/2022 18:26

She didn’t get 20% off her portion. She got 20% off the whole thing.

£700/5 is £140 - she’s taking the £140 discount as her paying her share.

So cheeky as fuck Anne pays £0 and everyone else pays £140.

Wow, that is unbelievable! Makes you wonder what kind of person she is generally.

MinnieGirl · 19/05/2022 19:40

I wouldn’t send any money, as I wouldn’t trust her.
Tell her that wasn’t the agreement and to return the item for a refund. You can then get the £500 item with or without CF.
And never trust her again…

Crafting1Queen · 19/05/2022 19:42

Oh, Anne is sleekit, she knew exactly what she was doing.

Bad at maths, my arse, she had that all planned as soon as her grubby little mind spotted/remembered the discount voucher (would be interesting to know if Anne was the first to suggest, or really bigged up the initial £500 item, knowing she was going to pull a fast one with the deluxe version, and waited it out until the voucher was due to expire, so there was then a bit of urgency to make the decision, or lose the better deal, and of course, who wouldn't want to push themselves to another £12, if that could be afforded, to get someone you all clearly love, a much better version of the "basic" model).

I have a close family member who operates like this, they have lost every friend/group they've ever had, due to their shenanigans, and is about to discover what Low & possibly No Contact is like, with family members. It's absolute dishonesty & as another PP said, it's stealing from the other 4. She is trying to pull a fast one, and all 4 of you need to agree together how you are dealing with it, so that no-one wobbles. She obviously has a total brass neck, and is relying on the rest of you being to embarrassed or too kind to call her out on her shit, and make her contribute her agreed financial share.

Alwayshoovering · 19/05/2022 19:42

Ahh see i would be so pissed off with that I wouldn't pay her a penny but would ask the other friend to order using the voucher and get the gift excluding Anne. Anne can then have the hassle of returning the gift or being 500 out of pocket. Using a promotional voucher does not cover your contribution to your share of a gift. Anne has not contributed a penny so should not be included in gift giving

Anne thumbs up likes this

dottymac · 19/05/2022 19:43

Send her £112 and tell her to get f#cked for the rest.

Tiredmum100 · 19/05/2022 19:44

Anne is a CF. I would send £112. I would also like to take Annes place in the friendship group for the £700 birthday present if you usually spend that much on each other 😉

I would definitely do this and say it was nice you were all able to get the deluxe version due to the extra 20% off.

If she argues, id say it wasn't what was agreed so she will have to return and get the original one.

She the one making it awkward so send the £112 and leave the ball in her court, cf!

Is that you Anne? 😁

Herejustforthisone · 19/05/2022 19:47

Anne, you total bitch. Yep, as everyone said, just transfer the agreed amount.

HansHoblein · 19/05/2022 19:48

@AnneDeluxe I didn't say the person was actually called Anne. Did I really need to write 'Anne' to make that clear?

And am I new? No. I'm actually very used to seeing the mn pile on which is just starting here! I come and go, sometimes i find the venom on here too much.

I am often surprised though by how invested people get on threads. Enough to name change to post a joke.

Nodancingshoes · 19/05/2022 19:48

I'm usually abit of a wimp about stuff like this but I would be texting a 'you are joking right???' message and transferring £114

Herejustforthisone · 19/05/2022 19:49

Also for Anne’s birthday I think everyone should just give her those Naked Wine ‘vouchers’ that get poked into just about every mail order delivery these days.

Nodancingshoes · 19/05/2022 19:49

Or even £112...
