I booked and paid for my grandparents to visit a beloved hotel of mine. It's a small place (around 8 bedrooms) run by a couple and this was their first time visiting.

For breakfast, you can choose a continental in the room or to dine in the dining room. My grandparents chose the continental in the room, which is delivered on a tray and includes a selection of juices in small individual glass bottles. My grandmother told me today that she had brought two of the bottles home as she liked them. I stay at this hotel a lot and the fact she stole something that isn't there to be taken makes me pissed off TBH. She wouldn't steal a plate or a cup, but she thought these bottles were fair game.

AIBU?

If you are really worried then ring the hotel. But I dont think I would bother. They don't cost much.

Doona · 19/05/2022 00:01

You can't control grandmothers' behaviour. Don't even try. They will do what they do.

Having spoken to my B and B owning friend he says he would be annoyed so i take it back.

It wasn't actually the OP that tickled me but some of the responses. Sorry @Rosebuud , and OP

Did you spit out your tea?

Wake the baby?

Did your dog look at you as if you were mad?

TabithaTittlemouse · 19/05/2022 00:07

Has she ever done anything like this before?

It seems bizarre to suddenly steal something if it’s not something she’s done before now.

You have nothing to feel ashamed about. You tried to do a really nice thing but you know not to do it again.

Mumsnet is strongly in favour of petty theft, tax fraud, etc., OP. I think you're wasting your time.

I'd be mortified. I know someone like this. They think everything is fair game if they've paid for a meal, the room, etc. It's thievery, plain and simple.

All my family are like this and it's so wrong. My husband often wonders where I got my morals from.

Nobodys in favour.

BadLad · 19/05/2022 00:39

Could your grandmother be on the spectrum?

stopwaitingforpermissiontobeyou · 19/05/2022 00:43

Oh Badlad.

Why mock my idea that granny wants to keep something from her weekend but then suggest that?

granny might not have had a break for 3 years, and might wonder if she will get one again, and might have wanted to take something to remember.

FWIW., people o the spectrum dont steal.

I gave a pupil on the spectrum a pen and they couldnt cope with that - it was stealing.

mellicauli · 19/05/2022 01:13

I guess they were like mini milk bottles? To older people who used to get their milk delivered every day, they were an item of questionable ownership. You gave them back to the milkman but I don't think you had to. Perhaps they yours because you paid for the milk and giving them back was more like recycling? It was all a bit vague.

These days they would be more like a milk jug so there'd be no question - but you can't blame a granny for being a bit behind the times. It's part of the job description.

I was about to agree with you, but then I remembered that last time we needed a door replacing at home, I booked an overnight stay at the Hilton...

I thought that said "needed a doctor replacing at home" and was confused about why I don't have a doctor in my home, and why you'd go to the Hilton to steal a new one Grin
To be fair I've been awake for 23 hours so far Hmm

I did once consider stealing the bed from Centreparcs. It was so comfy.

I think the OP means this sort of bottle, with fresh juices decanted into them.

Op said she could've bought them from eBay for a couple of quid, so maybe the first one.

Staynow · 19/05/2022 08:47

I'd assume that hotels would factor in little things getting broken/disappearing like this - otherwise they would probably contact her and tell her she needed to pay. If they're a couple of quid on ebay is it really such a biggie? They probably get broken and need replacing all the time.

Its true though.

shes a granny. An elderly person.

she might have kept it for that reason. I think thats perfectly feasible. as in, we got this from our lovely visit.

Bear in mind this generation havent been anywhere in over 2 years.

She's a thief.

LoveLarry · 19/05/2022 12:05

Have I fallen into a parallel universe where being a grandmother = being old, decrepit and housebound? And we should indulge them because, well, they're grandmothers.

FFS the casual ageism on here is sad

I'll let my parents know. I'm sure they'll be delighted they can stay at home ffs.

They are early 60s fwiw and have been grandparents since they were in their 40s.

BrioNotBiro · 19/05/2022 12:20

I'm confused. Was it two bottles of, say, Britvic juices which they could have drank anyway? Or some fancy decanters? But you said 'bottles' not decanters/pitchers etc.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 19/05/2022 12:23

I can't imagine getting worked up about this - hotels factor it all into the costs anyway.

You clearly know nothing about the spectrum by that comment

plus your ageism is shocking.

Yes, OP's housebound and decrepit mother regularly GOES AWAY ON WEEKENDS.

There's no casual ageism, you're dreaming.

We are simply pointing out that grandparents sometimes do things that are a bit daft but with good motivations.

PP are making out as if she nicked them to sell on the black market. The most likely explanation is she wanted to keep something to remember it.

Is there a reason you are so offended by grannies?
