To be ashamed?

I booked and paid for my grandparents to visit a beloved hotel of mine. It's a small place (around 8 bedrooms) run by a couple and this was their first time visiting.

For breakfast, you can choose a continental in the room or to dine in the dining room. My grandparents chose the continental in the room, which is delivered on a tray and includes a selection of juices in small individual glass bottles. My grandmother told me today that she had brought two of the bottles home as she liked them. I stay at this hotel a lot and the fact she stole something that isn't there to be taken makes me pissed off TBH. She wouldn't steal a plate or a cup, but she thought these bottles were fair game.

AIBU?

She usually carried a sizeable bag
Her name of course was Grandma Swag

rnsaslkih · 18/05/2022 22:56

You could send an email and say oh my granny thinks that these were packaging that she could have and I would like to reimburse you for them - how much are they? Then you would not have to feel ashamed.

I think you should disown the thieving old
cow. You get two grandmothers, but only one ‘beloved hotel’.

😂😆🤣

Luredbyapomegranate · 18/05/2022 22:58

Call and pay for them if it bothers you.

She nicked something and she shouldn't, but equally you are making a drama out of nothing and you shouldn't.

Conniebanana · 18/05/2022 23:00

I'd be the same OP. It's akin to nicking the cup/ spoons if it's a reusable bottle like a mason jar but a bottle
I'm tempted to start a thread on what people have stolen...

stopwaitingforpermissiontobeyou · 18/05/2022 23:00

Having spoken to my B and B owning friend he says he would be annoyed so i take it back.

It wasn't actually the OP that tickled me but some of the responses. Sorry @Rosebuud , and OP

RichardOsmansXraySpecs · 18/05/2022 23:01

Rosebuud · 18/05/2022 22:49

Yeah you are. It’s unpleasant. Why are you doing it? Shit day and it makes you feel better to make someone else feel shit?

😆 You need to chill a bit.

HollowTalk · 18/05/2022 23:02

I don't understand.

Wasn't it given to them for breakfast? If they didn't want to drink it then why couldn't they take it with them?

HotelCaliforniaOnRepeat · 18/05/2022 23:05

some of these responses 😫 I work in a hotel. They are reusable bottles, they cost considerably more than 10p, and multiplied by the percentage stolen it is expensive & annoying.
washing the bottles is no different to washing cups, glasses etc. Everything is washed and sanitised at high temperatures.

Hospitality is under massive pressure, please think about your actions.
@ILoveAndrew don't be ashamed, if you emailed offering to pay i imagine the will let you off but appreciate the gesture. I would.

this is a good compromise

Recyclable cardboard cartons with the hotel logo on are the way to go. No washing up and no nicking.

Ikeameatballs · 18/05/2022 23:09

So yes, it’s theft and wrong but why are you ashamed of some one else’s actions? You are separate people, you are not responsible for her actions.

stopwaitingforpermissiontobeyou · 18/05/2022 22:51

You think in COVID they re use a glass bottle? do you think bars do?

Of course glass bottles are reused. Just like cups & plates, they can be washed.

Playplayaway · 18/05/2022 23:12

I remember when Orangina came out we had a little collection of the glass bottles. It was considered rather posh, like Perrier, Gold Blend and Vienetta. Now I'm thinking it was probably mostly sugar, like Sunny D.
And now I'm off on a tangent, which means it's time for bed 🥱

yesthatisdrizzle · 18/05/2022 23:16

My DD had a job in hotel housekeeping for a short while a few years ago. Some of what she had to deal with on a daily basis beggars belief.

Believe me, a missing pair of little glass bottles will be the least of the staff's worries😂

growandhope · 18/05/2022 23:18

But what type of bottles are you talking about? Like a carafe? I presume you know the owners well to feel ashamed and as it is such a small establishment, I'd replace the bottles and make some sort of excuse for her thinking they were prepackaged juice type things.

ventreàterre · 18/05/2022 23:20

I'd imagine OP is embarrassed because she booked the hotel for her grandparents, and worries the hotel owners will remember and link the "incident" with her. It could possibly reflect poorly on her, if they notice and are annoyed.

If it's bothering you, OP, the obvious answer is to do as PP have said. Contact the hotel, make an excuse, and offer to pay for the bottles. It might be embarrassing in the moment, but at least you can then let it go, as you will have done what you could to make things right.

SlobDylan · 18/05/2022 23:22

I think the OP means this sort of bottle, with fresh juices decanted into them.

To be ashamed?

Yes, pretty much identical to the little glass bottles of orange juice that you used to be able to get from the milkman...

I used to liberate the rubber duckies 🦆from Apex hotel bathrooms on my stays. Had quite an impressive collection in the end.

Obviously I am going to hell.

My best friend was a BDM at Apex Hotels. The ducks were meant to be liberated. They literally have millions of them. Everytime we met up she'd give me a duck 😂

BadLad · 18/05/2022 23:42

Has it occured to you shes kept them to remind her of the lovely stay you paid for?

Brilliant

Its true though.

shes a granny. An elderly person.

she might have kept it for that reason. I think thats perfectly feasible. as in, we got this from our lovely visit.

Bear in mind this generation havent been anywhere in over 2 years.

Jenasaurus · 18/05/2022 23:51

Are they like these bottles OP
