To be ashamed?

I booked and paid for my grandparents to visit a beloved hotel of mine. It's a small place (around 8 bedrooms) run by a couple and this was their first time visiting.

For breakfast, you can choose a continental in the room or to dine in the dining room. My grandparents chose the continental in the room, which is delivered on a tray and includes a selection of juices in small individual glass bottles. My grandmother told me today that she had brought two of the bottles home as she liked them. I stay at this hotel a lot and the fact she stole something that isn't there to be taken makes me pissed off TBH. She wouldn't steal a plate or a cup, but she thought these bottles were fair game.

Just offered to pay for them

"Police, Now!"
Sadly I think the already very overstretched Police have far bigger things to contend with than a couple of stolen bottles ie murders and rapes ECT ECT.
That's not to say what they did wasn't wrong and I bet the same people would have more than enough to say if this were a couple of teenagers behaving like this.

Butchyrestingface · 18/05/2022 22:07

I used to liberate the rubber duckies 🦆from Apex hotel bathrooms on my stays. Had quite an impressive collection in the end.

Obviously I am going to hell.

LoudingVoice · 18/05/2022 22:11

Meh I really couldn’t get worked up about it and really it’s nothing to do with you anyway.

Thatboymum · 18/05/2022 22:12

I think your being a bit dramatic and I highly doubt they will hold it against you especially as you say for a couple of cheap glass bottles

RichardOsmansXraySpecs · 18/05/2022 21:51

Police, now!

😂😂😂😂

Genevieva · 18/05/2022 22:15

The drinks are provided for them to drink. She didn't steal them. She took them with her for later. You might be surprised but this is normal and expected. I remember being on a a Virgin Atlantic flight and the little salt and pepper shakers had 'stolen from Virgin' embossed underneath! What isn't acceptable is taking the loo roll from the bathroom, the towels or anything like that, but sadly some people do steal almost anything that isn't nailed down. Food and drink that formed part of a meal though - they don't care whether she drank the juice there or at home later.

What's the difference between taking a glass bottle or the bedside lamp? If it doesn't belong to you it's stealing, end of.

The most ridiculous thing I've ever read. Phone the hotel, ask them. "My gran took a juice bottle". I really doubt they'll call the police. It's not stealing FFS, if she had thought to ask they would gladly have given it to her. It's akin to taking the crappy shampoos in the bathrooms. I assume gran didn't take the dining chairs on the way out.

Oh stop it! It's funny. Make a joke of it "I can't take her anywhere" next time you are there. They'll see much worse.

ComtesseDeSpair · 18/05/2022 22:19

If you’re really worried about your reputation just call or email and say your grandparents don’t stay at hotels very often and assumed that the bottles were like the miniature hotel toiletries, sewing kits and stationery and fine for them to keep, can you pay for them. They’ll almost certainly tell you not to worry about it.

Booboobibles · 18/05/2022 22:19

You must have an awful life if you get upset about such ridiculous things.

Your poor granny!

BreakorMake · 18/05/2022 22:21

Sounds like no one on the hotel staff had an issue with this when the breakfast stuff was collected from their room.

Struggling to visualise these "bottles". Were they refillable like baby carafes or what?

Anyway, I wouldn't give it another thought. YOU didn't do anything wrong and maybe your GPs didn't either. Give yourself a break FGS and less of the drama over nothing.

Kanaloa · 18/05/2022 22:26

To be fair I wouldn’t have thought little glass bottles were multiple use? I would have thought it was like a glass bottle of Coke or J20, where you get one and then it’s tossed out.

I think you’re just being a tiny bit OTT about it too - you didn’t take them, so why feel ‘so ashamed?’

Momicrone · 18/05/2022 22:28

Booboobibles, surely that's part of the point of a forum like mumsnet, we all gave shit that annoys us yet seems petty to others

Banoffe · 18/05/2022 22:30

I couldn't get upset about it. Wouldn't do it personally but my parents would and it actually made me chuckle reading about this as it reminded me of them!

I think being ashamed is probably a bit over the top to be honest.

thevanilla · 18/05/2022 22:31

I would have assumed they were single use. Calm down

I think you've missed some very, very blatant sarcasm 😂😂😂

I don't pinch from hotels, but I would be seriously tempted by ducks.

I bet everyone takes them and they are included in the room price. If a guest doesn't steal them they'll regard it as a bonus. 😁

JennyJumpup · 18/05/2022 22:34

Offer to reimburse the hotel for the price they paid. It will be about 10p and your conscience will be eased.

museumum · 18/05/2022 22:34

i would never steal from a hotel but I’d also not think there was anything wrong in taking a bottle of juice or water that was part of a meal I’d paid for away with me.
its quite obviously nothing like taking a bedside lamp!

stopwaitingforpermissiontobeyou · 18/05/2022 22:34

Oh wow.

Please say you have not given your poor granny grief over this.

Has it occured to you shes kept them to remind her of the lovely stay you paid for?

theyd have gone in the bottle bin!

One day your granny will be gone, and you will find that glass bottle and smile.

In the nicest possible way - get over yourself.

I remember once I was so excited to buy a present for my gran and was walking around looking at numerous things. I accidentally ended up walking out the (market) with a 50p wee notepad that my mam hadnt realised I had in my hands.

She went tonto, but didnt take it back, and we gave it to my gran. Everytime I saw it I felt like shit.

My gran?40 years on still refers to the incident with great joy and hilarity.
