AIBU to hope for a libel trial as entertaining as Vardy v Rooney and an outcome that rivals the Katy Hopkins debacle?

Jack Monroe insists Jamie Oliver has done nothing for food poverty in her recent tweets.

In fact like him or loath him he has long campaigned for better food for children. It is largely due to this there are salad bars in schools now and a greater
look at nutrition. It’s still not brilliant but coming from where it was it’s amazing. For my autistic son with a limited diet it meant a real choice and the ability to choose his own foods.

Makes me laugh that if he had said such a thing about her she’d be howling and on the phone to her lawyers. It seems she feels free enough to make the comments but when someone makes them about her then she’s raging.

I think people need to remember that the vast majority of MPs expenses are actually wages for their staff.

You need to ignore the bullshit headlines touted by people with an agenda and look into the facts.

Eg put of 190k expenses. 160k of which go to office and staff wages. Unless you're going to sack all of the support staff involved in politics, that'd be hundreds of people unemployed.

That still leaves £30k which is more than the income of many. That have a salary of around £84k and still claim for stuff the rest of us pay for from our earnings.

The 190k was George Eustice.
Called out by Monroe not long ago.

He claimed 190k in expenses.
160k was for paying his staff, 2k less than average.

You say 30k is stuff we'd pay from our salary..
So, if your company sent you 250miles away and told you to run an office, they'd make you pay for that office from your salary?
Because that's what Eustice claimed the other 30k for.

Office costs, policy researchers, phone lines, council tax for the office, computers and tech for the office. So on and so on and so on.

Criticise an MP for what they do and say, everyone should, but expenses aren't as simple. They're used by people without much of a clue to try and score easy points. But even a 2 minute Google shows it's pretty much nonsense.

People shouldn't believe things without looking for themselves. Wether it's MPs expenses, flat earth, backstories or anything else.

This whole argument is only going to yield what JM wants if their own finances prove to be scrupulously clean and above reproach.

today’s Twitter threads relating to mortgage appointments and followers offering to help crowdfund for JM’s ‘much deserved forever home’ along with her comments that the regular Patreon donations received ‘don’t cover my rent or bills’ (there’s an expectation there isn’t there) are not going to cover them in glory and may indeed be used to prove that the income gained from these funding streams comes from people far less well off than JM herself.

Maëlys · 29/05/2022 18:15

@Mumberjack She could not have hinted any harder FFS.

That’s shocking -aren’t her parents buy yo let millionaires?

SlightlyGeordieJohn · 30/05/2022 00:09

What on Earth has she been doing; applying for a mortgage that she knows she doesn’t want, wasting everyone’s time, and then pretending that the branch staff she was messing around were “hostile”?

Sorrynotsorryyeah · 30/05/2022 07:19

There’s already people on Twitter offering to give her cash for the “forever home”. She claims to have outstanding CCJs which would affect her ability to get credit, that is true but I am surprised that is the case when it’s now 10 years ago since her poverty period and surely a family member could guarantee her mortgage. It could be that she’s very bad with money and has allowed the debts to pile up but then that is on her, not because she lives in poverty. It’s all so fake.

@SlightlyGeordieJohn It won’t have been a waste of time for her if the outcome is a crowdfunder for her house deposit.

It’s already planted the idea in her followers heads.

I think poor money management is a huge element and probably can’t be attributed to the previous period of hardship, nor any health conditions.
when I followed Jack Monroe they were in the media a lot and seemed connected to a lot of the guardian and London ‘set’ - like any star who’s celebrity has faded, maybe the spending habits didn’t change in line with any change in fortunes.
that’s why I feel uncomfortable and angry about a crowdfund for a mortgage based on their reiteration of their time in poverty, when so much has changed since then.

That’s true. I bet she was trying her best to get a “hostile” response too, whereas what she may have got was mild exasperation that someone was using their time to play a silly game when they could have been helping someone who genuinely did want a mortgage.

Advanceofthetrifle · 02/06/2022 12:36

Can’t beli That she labelled/libelled(?) Jeremy Kyle as ‘handsy’ on the sofa in the wee small hours. No wonder it was deleted pdq!

SplatPancake · 03/06/2022 06:59

The tweet/delete cycle drives me mad, and this behaviour on social media was excoriated by the judge in the Hopkins case - she was lucky to win that.

There have been several wry smiles over the past few days as a result of the new ONS report confirming that her nonsense claim from earlier in the year (food up 344%, people are being starved by the supermarkets or whatever) is simply not true….

Borisblondboufant · 03/06/2022 23:21

But she just says it’s not true and her followers literally just believe her. They don’t think facts are an issue.

Maëlys · 04/06/2022 22:49

@Borisblondboufant Her followers are like Trump supporters.

Maëlys · 01/08/2022 20:24

Reviving this thread to ask if anyone else has seen her blogpost from last night? She posted it on her Twitter as a big announcement and begging people to be kind as it was very hard for her to write.

it was all about how she’s so broke that she’s going to have to sell all her stuff AGAIN and move to a tiny flat where she has to sleep on the sofa because her child needs the bedroom 😢 PayPal link was included. Predictably, she got hundreds of Twitter replies from people saying they were sending her money.

What WAS surprising was that there’s been a lot more pushback on Twitter than I can ever recall seeing before. Someone has even posted a thread calling her out and posting receipts. Maybe she’s pushed it too far this time.

irishfeminist · 01/08/2022 20:48

This thread is gaining some traction (in response to an epic new beg by Jack last night). Looks like people are finally waking up to this con artist.

She's such a professional victim.

cakeorwine · 01/08/2022 21:00

What part of that story do you struggle to believe?
Being in a fixed term rental contract in London and not able to get out of it when her partner left?
I can imagine that renting in London is expensive.
Do books provide much income?

Or do you not believe any of it?

Despite what Monroe claims:

A typical royalty is 10% of the RRP on hardbacks and 7.5% on paperbacks

www.societyofauthors.org/Where-We-Stand/buying-choices/How-do-authors-get-paid#:~:text=A%20typical%20royalty%20is%2010,when%20retailers%20demand%20higher%20discounts.

Her deal maybe different.. but that's on her.

London might be expensive, but as she claims she gets no support etc.. and she works from home... Well, lots of people have been told they should move somewhere cheaper if they can't afford London.

Patron income..

Blog ads..

Several TV appearances..

Several radio appearances..

Newspaper columns..

Co presenter of an actual TV show..

And more and more and more..

There's a website that keeps track of it and Tattles on all the inconsistencies.

MaryAndHerNet · 01/08/2022 21:11

Oh, and it's worth mentioning, a fixed term rental can absolutely be ended early if your landlord agrees to it.

You contact them and tell them you're struggling and that your partner soft etc. They don't want someone that can't afford.tompay so they agree to end the tenancy at the 12 month, 18month 2 year points or at anytime at agreement with the tenant.

Maëlys · 01/08/2022 21:11

She doesn’t live in london

Maëlys · 01/08/2022 21:12

She’s recently bought a designer dog type puppy. Recently, as in the last few weeks.
