DS is 17 in a few months, since he was very young he's wanted a dog and he now seems responsible to look after one. My ex has mentioned buying a dog for his main present which I could do but he's also said that the dog will live with me and DS full time as he works full time and I only work part time but I do also have a 3 year old to look after.

Aibu to not want the dog to live with me?

buying a dog for a present is unreasonable full stop. It’s almost a guarantee that the kid will bore of the dog pretty soon and not walk it enough, so unless you want to take on the responsibility of the dog (as let’s face it you can’t just let the dog suffer with no walks to make a point to a teen) no don’t get one. Your child can get a dog when he’s got his own place if you don’t want a dog

If your ex buys it for son, the dog lives with him. 17 year olds will not trail a dog round with them on their social jaunts, so the dog would be left in the house, with you if you give in! 17 yr olds are OUT more than IN.

YANBU!

I LOVE dogs - we have three. I, personally, would hate not to have a dog - but I appreciate that other people often don't have the time of the interest for a dog.

Your ds is 17 - he is mad or a dog now, but in a year or two may be at university, or madly in lurve - who is stuck with the dog then? YOU ARE.

It isn't fair on you, on your toddler or on the dog.

Stick to your guns. Say "no".

I got a dog for my 16th birthday. Apart from the initial excitement etc. I barely did any of the looking after. I was 16 and too immature. Difference is, my parents knew this when they bought her for me and didn't realistically expect me to look after her for her entire life. I left home at 21 (leaving her behind) and she sadly passed away when I was 31.

Basically don't get a dog for a teen unless YOU want a dog. Because they are basically going to be yours.

ExH is an idiot. It’s not OK to buy a dog as a present, it’s a member of the family. It’s doubly not ok to buy a dog to live in someone else’s home, and make that someone else look after it.

The cheek of your ex!!! As if the only thing preventing you from getting your son a dog the last decade was finding one

themonkeysnuts · 16/11/2022 17:15

If your son wants a dog he can have one
When he has his own house , full stop !
