To think this cake is inappropriate

I don't understand, in what world, it's appropriate to make a cake (for a child's birthday!) showing the death of over 1500 people.

In 100 years time will we be making cakes of Grenfell tower?

I googled titanic cakes and the cake you’ve shown was made by a company and the comments about it were posted 3 years ago. 😏🧐

JulyDreams · 13/05/2022 18:02

Omg I've seen it all now

Shitfuckcommaetc · 13/05/2022 18:51

For all the amateur Sherlock's, this is the FB post I saw on the subject.
I'm not a wierdo googling random cakes to "froth up" Mumsnet.
But I do find it in extreme bad taste! But I can see opinion is split on that.
A cake of the ship fine, but a cake of it sinking just seems a bit off to me

I work with young people and one would absolutely love this cake!
He is obsessed with all things titanic but he’s not 5 so it can’t be him.

One of them also loves all things war and would absolutely have a cake with tanks and weapons on.

Yes people died but they weren’t murdered, this was a historical event which many people are very interested in.

why is there a fish on a hook after your post.

I got obsessed by the Titanic as a child, I'd have loved this cake!

I was obsessed with the Russian Romanovs, one in particular. Doesn't mean it would have been appropriate to bake me a cake of the 'basement scene'.

XenoBitch · 13/05/2022 20:08

I guess the child has a huge Titanic obsession. It is just a cake. It is not being paraded out in public. It will be looked at, then eaten.

That was a mistake. And somehow I couldn't erase it. My device is acting up at moment

@MrsSkylerWhite I was obsessed with aircrash documentaries when I was 5 because my dad loved them 😂 so doesn't seem entirely impossible?“

Wow. Ours were just about on Rosie and Jim when they were 5.

how do air crash disaster documentaries enhance the life of a 5 year old? 🤯

MrsSkylerWhite · 13/05/2022 20:39

PortiaFimbriata · 13/05/2022 13:55
If you're going to be so very concerned about the negative impacts of children being fascinated by terrible events of over a century ago then you might want to start with the sixty-odd books and nine TV series of Horrible Histories rather than one five year-old's birthday cake.“

horrible Histories is brilliant. It’s not aimed at 5 year olds, though (obviously).

womaniswomaniswoman · 13/05/2022 20:40

Scabbyknackers · 13/05/2022 07:49

I agree it's in rotten taste. And does that say a 5th birthday?! Random thing for a 5 year old to be into

My son was obsessed with the titanic when he was 6. He learned to read through a titanic book. It's not that weird.

I was obsessed with bullfighting when I was 5/6. I used to draw very bloody pictures in school.

strrawberriesandcream · 13/05/2022 20:42

It would have been more appropriate to just make the ship whole.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 13/05/2022 07:45

I don't disagree but your remark about Grenfell is really tactless OP (I'm a friend of someone who died there)

How is it tactless?

did you allow your six year olds to watch bullfighting? (Guessing you’re in Spain?). If you did, just, WHY?

Benjispruce4 · 13/05/2022 20:51

Gosh how strange. Yes I agree, it’s not appropriate.

Goldijobsandthe3bears · 13/05/2022 20:51

thedancingbear · 13/05/2022 10:20

Yes, but the reference is still crass. Why fucking go there? It obviously risks distressing and offending people.

What’s offensive about it?

Benjispruce4 · 13/05/2022 20:52

If the child was interested in the ship itself, the cake could be the whole boat pre disaster.

My paternal grandfsther died on the Titanic. I think I'll be giving it a miss.

No, I am in England. I saw the film 'Blood and Sand' on daytime TV when I was small.

StoneofDestiny · 13/05/2022 21:34

Cakes are for celebrations, disasters are not causes for celebration and it's in bad taste.

Well, I wouldn't call them life enhancing, but neither were any of the kids TV shows I watched. Aircraft investigation documentaries aren't gruesome though. They don't show people dying. It's more interesting stuff about how the crash happened, how they retrieved the blackbox, how changes were made to prevent it happening again.

I was more disturbed by sad moments in kids films tbh, like when the animals got lost in Homeward Bound!

badspella · 14/05/2022 09:00

I am another mother whose autistic child had an obsession with the Titanic. Yes, he would have loved the cake, but since he hates birthday parties, he would probably eaten it with his family. Later he had an obsession with tornadoes (and they kill a lot of people too), and I can imagine a twister cake would be fascinating.

Like others, perhaps the complete ship rather than the sinking one.

LondonQueen · 14/05/2022 09:17

I loved titanic as a child. this would have been a dream! It's nothing like comparing it to Grenfell where people were more recently affected. That is quite tactless.
