To think this cake is inappropriate

I don't understand, in what world, it's appropriate to make a cake (for a child's birthday!) showing the death of over 1500 people.

In 100 years time will we be making cakes of Grenfell tower?

To think this cake is inappropriate

Problem with that cake is the icing to sponge/filling ratio is gonna be way off. That’s why you shouldn’t have ship hulls on cakes.

True. 😆

SleeplessInEngland · 13/05/2022 11:33

I think Titanic has transcended the tragic elements of its story and ingrained itself in the public imagination so much that it's a unique case. They made a joke about in Ghostbusters fgs. As such it's not a cake I could be offended by.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 13/05/2022 10:13

And does that say a 5th birthday?! Random thing for a 5 year old to be into

At 5 my ds was obsessed by the Titanic. He then branched out to maritime disasters in general, got stuck on the Hood and Bismarck for a bit and
now at 7 is fascinated by aircraft carriers and Vulcan bombers.

I personally prefer it to pokemon which many of his school friends seem to be into.

Are you me? Because that is exactly my DS.

His Titanic phase was nothing to do with the DiCaprio/Winslet movie, but there were no shortage of child-orientated Titanic toys and books, so it's obviously not a rare interest for that age group.

Greensleeves · 13/05/2022 11:33

I don't think it would be inappropriate at all, for a certain kind of child who was obsessed with the story. Children's culture hasn't always been as sanitised as 21st century parents think it ought to be. Should we ban Ring a Ring o' Roses as well, since it references the Black Death? I think a few people died there, too. How about The Good Ship Sailed on the Ally Ally O? I recall singing that one at a church toddler group. It's about...the Titanic.

Witchofthedales · 13/05/2022 11:37

Very, very odd.

StarCourt · 13/05/2022 12:27

One of my nephews was obsessed with Titanic the film and could def see him asking for that cake

VladmirsPoutine · 13/05/2022 12:31

It's just like Grenfell OP. In fact I'd go even further than that - it's just like slavery & colonisation.

standoctor · 13/05/2022 12:47

The Titanic is a fascinating story
See no problem with it if it makes a child interested in our history

GreatCuppa · 13/05/2022 13:42

Fuck off with your ‘autism mums’ speech. You’ve got no idea.

Interesting how sensitivities change. Looking up house and town history - postcard of photo of train crash wreckage and photo montage of coalminers killed in mine disaster. No cinema or TV of course so a way of seeing news.

I wonder if Grenfell will be recalled in 100 years.

Titanic has been used by the right wing, left wing, religious, nationalists and sociologists since it happened and will do into the future.

PortiaFimbriata · 13/05/2022 13:55

If you're going to be so very concerned about the negative impacts of children being fascinated by terrible events of over a century ago then you might want to start with the sixty-odd books and nine TV series of Horrible Histories rather than one five year-old's birthday cake.

Shitfuckcommaetc · 13/05/2022 10:12

Posted this morning on a FB site asking for someone to make a cake like the one pictured.

Also the cake in the picture clearly says "happy 5th birthday"

Not that clear when you have eyes as old as mine! I had to zoom in on the picture to spot the little "5th Birthday" line. Doesn't even say Happy to help me out! Grin

I presume you missed my sarcasm? I wasn't being a dick - I even wrote 'autism mums' so it was taken as the quote intended. Perhaps you haven't come across this online but i really wasn't intending to be a dick at all. I will report your comment though. Thanks.

I was being sarcastic. Have you never come across these types? The groups? No? Reporting you though.

I detect no sarcasm at all in your original post.

You're just a nasty bit of work.

Report away.

fluffycereal · 13/05/2022 14:20

@thedancingbear

I'm so sorry. I'm not nasty at all. I mean I don't like the 'autism mum' clique but I think that was missed in my post, that's all. I'm really sorry I got that wrong. But yes I did report for telling me to fuck off because if you are not happy with a post you just have to say and as has happened here I have tried to explain and apologised. Telling someone to fuck off over having a mature conversation is a horrible thing to do.

Folklore9074 · 13/05/2022 14:20

Titanic is different to Grenfell because of the time frames at play. Yes there might be a couple of people who remember someone who was able to provide a first hand account but not many now. There have been movies etc. it’s an event in popular culture. We all saw Grenfell on the tv and internet, it is still visceral and people are still suffering. Time makes a huge difference in these matters.

Fine, whatever. Does this work better for you?

'I think your post was disablist and nasty. Please can you try not to stereotype and stigmatise neuro diverse children, and their parents, because it's repellent and grossly offensive.'

As I say, report away. I don't give a monkeys.

maddy68 · 13/05/2022 14:27

Depends. If a kid was obsessed with a certain train it would be fine so of he's obsessed on titanic it's perfect too much overthinking here

fluffycereal · 13/05/2022 14:27

@thedancingbear

I got it wrong. I'm sorry for that. It wasn't intended as nasty or disabling and I genuinely did not mean to be offensive or repellent (what a horrible thing to say to someone trying to apologise for getting it wrong) Sad

Fivecluckyhens · 13/05/2022 14:27

So far today my five year old has painted several pictures of the titanic and made yet another Lego titanic. He’s just seen this cake picture and excitedly asked me if he can have it for his birthday. He’s already been asking for a titanic themed birthday party 🤦‍♀️

SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit · 13/05/2022 14:33

The 'autism mums' post was ridiculous and sneery. My daughter is autistic... does that make me make some sort of dickhead who's incapable of bringing her up properly, who will do anything, however inappropriate, to keep her happy and doesn't know where to draw a line?

Clue: no it doesn't.

I didn't see where it was mentioned that the cake was for an autistic child in any case.

I'd be interested to know just how you intended it, then, if you did not intend it as 'nasty or disabling [sic]'. Just for my own edification, like.

And your post was repellent. I was offended by it. I'm entitled to tell you that,
