Cornwall!!

why do people pay stupid amounts to holiday here?
I nearly spat my coffee out in work today. A co worker has paid £1600 for a week in st Ives, last week of June!

she showed me it! It’s a pretty basic, one bedroomed cottage. Wtf!!

i have booked flights and an Airbnb in greece for just over £1000. I’ll admit I never holiday in the uk, because it just doesn’t feel like a proper holiday to me, but if I do it’s always a deal/ bargain Airbnb type thing.

what’s the attraction of Cornwall?
By all accounts it’s overcrowded cost a fortune to park , and eat out, and a pretty mediocre experience all round!

I can't get excited about Cornwall, just getting there with the horrendous traffic and tiny roads seems more hassle than it's worth and a weekend is more than enough IMO. The Minack theatre and Porth Curno are pretty special though, and Heligan is nice as is St Micheals Mount. I don't mind a dinner in Fowey either. Going to Cornwall is a fine weekend break (if you get the weather) but it's not a holiday IMO.

3beesinmybonnet · 12/05/2022 20:57

Cornwall is not mediocre. It's beautiful.
Obviously different people like different things.

Karwomannghia · 12/05/2022 20:58

I love it and go every year. It’s beautiful and not too hot. I do wish the sea was warmer though!

5foot5 · 12/05/2022 20:59

We went last year because we thought trying to book a foreign holiday was still too hit and miss, and after recent events going all the way to Cornwall from North West England felt pretty exotic!

It is a lovely part of the world. Bits were crowded but last year when we went didn't seem too bad:

  1. We were just before main school holidays started
  2. We are not so much beachy people as walkers and if you put your boots on and get away from main tourist traps you can still have a bit of space.
  3. Remaining Covid restrictions actually worked in our favour as you had to book everywhere in advance so places that might normally be really busy, like Eden Project and Lost Gardens and Tintagel, we're actually quite tolerable.
FrankLampardsBrokenHand · 12/05/2022 21:01

Cornwall is beautiful. It can't be beyond your capacity to understand that people all like different things.

I go to Devon most years and absolutely love it. If someone thinks the cottage they booked is worth the price then I don't really understand why anyone else should be bothered.

SofiaSoFar · 12/05/2022 21:07

"What's the attraction of Cornwall?"

Well, what's the attraction of Greece? I'd much rather spend a week in Cornwall than a week sweating in a hot country.

Bighairydogs · 12/05/2022 21:11

It IS lovely. I’m from there so I’ll defend it to the end of time (even though I no longer live there) - however it’s not worth £1600 for a week! I have a friend with a small place renting out for £2400 in July - outrageously overpriced. It gets way too busy in the summer too - the infrastructure isn’t there for 1000s of tourists (same as Norfolk, Lake District, New Forest, anywhere nice in the UK). I’d much rather go abroad for a much cheaper trip, interesting culture, less crowds, better weather & nicer food!

Seashor · 12/05/2022 21:14

I’ve done two long weekends recently in a treehouse at Center Parcs. Set me back nearly £9000. Many will say I could have gone to XY and Z for that but I didn’t want to! It’s horses for courses. Although I do much prefer Devon to Cornwall but would prefer either to Greece.

hellrabbitishere · 12/05/2022 21:14

cornwall is nice , but its stupid money for what it is and the weather isnt any better there than the rest of the uk which is crap and unpredictable , if i could holiday in greece for the same money or less i will take greece every single time ,

Roystonv · 12/05/2022 21:15

Have just come back from 3 weeks touring Devon and Cornwall. Never been before, glad I've been but not as wonderful as I expected and would not go back. Did visits to coast, inland, NT, EH and many churches and saw some lovely things but the counties themselves rather disappointed. We paid about £300 for 4 nights at 4 various 1 bed Airbnb's.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 12/05/2022 21:15

I hate Greece
l love Cornwall.

I’d rather a cooler greener place than an arid boiling hot mosquito ridden inferno.

🤷🏼‍♀️

JayAlfredPrufrock · 12/05/2022 21:15

Love Cornwall but I wouldn’t pay that.

P0larexpress · 12/05/2022 21:16

I don’t sweat!! It would have to be 30 degrees plus before I break a sweat😀
The climate suits me perfectly. Beautiful beaches, delicious food at decent prices, and don’t feel like I’m ripped off with mediocre food and bad service!

I love Cornwall, in all seasons!

We have just paid £850 for a cottage in June that is for 5 people.

We could have got a cottage a similar cottage for £550, but paid extra as the complex has a pool and sauna and the cottage is recently renovated.

Have we overpaid 😳

StScholastica · 12/05/2022 21:22

We've paid £2400 for our holiday cottage in Cornwall. Love the place and you know.....carbon footprint and all that.

OneCup · 12/05/2022 21:22

I like Cornwall but it's too expensive for me...

nonevernotever · 12/05/2022 21:24

@Seashor please tell me that's a typo! £9000 for two long weekends?

ButtockUp · 12/05/2022 21:25

Cornwall is stunningly beautiful.

However, getting to various places to visit will inevitably mean getting gridlocked on the only major road through it.

Many of the quaint towns are Seasalt/Joules/moshulu by the sea. ( If you get what I mean.)

Land's End is just awful .

So many towns and villages that you drive through are so very sad .

Holiday makers have ruined so many places by the sheer volume of their wants ... ie second home owners/Airbnb lets.

I really feel sorry for the Cornish and, yes, we holidayed there once. Never again , despite the beauty of the place.

Do you drive a car, have children eat meat?

I love Cornwall, I also love lots of other holiday destinations abroad - they are all different and provide different types of holiday not much to fathom there, really.

Anyone eating bad food in Cornwall is going to the wrong places though! plenty of great restaurants serving freshly sourced produce.

APurpleSquirrel · 12/05/2022 21:27

Have you ever actually been to Cornwall @P0larexpress ?

mudgetastic · 12/05/2022 21:29

OP you can eat red meat and drive a car abs still live a low carbon life

Gets a lot harder if you throw in a flight or two

P0larexpress · 12/05/2022 21:29

You’ve got more money than sense paying £2,400!! Absolute madness😞

Personally I much prefer Cornwall to Greece
love St Ives
But each to their own

Moonface123 · 12/05/2022 21:31

Its not the friendliest of places, service is terrible as well as the food and l am normally very forgiving.
They were telling us all to "F**k Off" during covid, not that l have any desire to go back ever again.
Weather can be crap and the price of everything is a complete rip off.
My advice would be to steer clear, there are much nicer, quieter places to visit such as beautiful Wales, Scotland, Dorset and Devon.
