Cornwall!!

why do people pay stupid amounts to holiday here?
I nearly spat my coffee out in work today. A co worker has paid £1600 for a week in st Ives, last week of June!

she showed me it! It’s a pretty basic, one bedroomed cottage. Wtf!!

i have booked flights and an Airbnb in greece for just over £1000. I’ll admit I never holiday in the uk, because it just doesn’t feel like a proper holiday to me, but if I do it’s always a deal/ bargain Airbnb type thing.

what’s the attraction of Cornwall?
By all accounts it’s overcrowded cost a fortune to park , and eat out, and a pretty mediocre experience all round!

I love Cornwall. However wouldn’t go in peak season or pay those prices!

Have you ever actually been to Cornwall @P0larexpress ?

yes I have.

I agree with pp it's horses for courses.

I went to Greece once to visit the historical sites. In the winter though. I wouldn't go back. We'd also never stay in an air bnb after bad experiences and the horror stories some people have.

We adore Cornwall and will happily pay ££££ to visit. I'm not bothered if anyone thinks we're bonkers.

It's the same as any other decision in life....some people value driving a brand new car, others drive old bangers even if they're millionaires.... some people wait years to buy a specific designer handbag whilst others think it looks like it's from primark 😂

Spaghag · 12/05/2022 21:35

Prices in the UK have gone up massively since Covid made booking anywhere else a bit risky. Supply & demand.

Cornwall is beautiful. We have paid £2000 for 11 nights in South Devon in August. Much more that pre Covid prices but it will still be worth every penny.

interferringma · 12/05/2022 21:40

St Ives takes the p@ss in my opinion. I'm live in Cornwall and there are nicer, less crowded, more reasonable places to go. Visit St Ives for the day by all means but once you're in you're kind of hemmed in by the tiny streets and crowds. Supremely overrated place. I know a lot of people who live there and somehow (I dont know how tbh) they all seem to have airbnbs/cabins/studios/second properties which they rent out for the sorts of rates quoted above. I don't get it!
Go to Newlyn or Mousehole or just about anywhere and it'll be nicer!

Onwards22 · 12/05/2022 21:41

I love Cornwall.
I live here so I am a bit biased but the prices of holidays are extortionate and I wouldn’t pay to come here during the busy season simply due to the cost and you’re not guaranteed good weather.

Contrary to what people think we love the holiday makers but we don’t like the people who buy property here and rent them out as holiday homes as Cornwall is an extremely deprived area and affordable housing is very rare.
There was a news article a couple of days ago reporting there were almost 100 houses available for rent in a certain area but only 3 were non-holiday homes and so of course the rent price was ridiculous.

However the holiday makers do help make Cornwall what it is and it’s often only when an outsider comes and says how nice it is do you actually appreciate living here.

OrangeSamphire · 12/05/2022 21:43

I live in Cornwall. It’s stunningly beautiful, wild and interesting historically and culturally. It’s also. expensive (to live here and holiday here). Come or don’t come… there’s plenty of people who adore it here and plenty of people who don’t.

BlusteryLake · 12/05/2022 21:43

I guess it depends what you're looking for in a holiday. Luckily most people can find something they are happy with within their budget. If you don't like UK holidays, don't go on one. As we saw during the pandemic, if everyone stays in the UK it gets insane!

IstayedForTheFeminism · 12/05/2022 21:44

I love Cornwall. Its Beautiful. I'd much rather go there than Greece. Different people like different things and that's ok.

And I'd never pay to go to CentreParcs. Serious rip off IMO.

frogleap · 12/05/2022 21:44

I love Greece

I love Cornwall

I wouldn't do either in the UK summer holidays.

Its not the friendliest of places, service is terrible as well as the food and l am normally very forgiving.
They were telling us all to "F**k Off" during covid, not that l have any desire to go back ever again.
Weather can be crap and the price of everything is a complete rip off.
My advice would be to steer clear, there are much nicer, quieter places to visit such as beautiful Wales, Scotland, Dorset and Devon.

At the height of Covid there were 7 (not a typo) ICU/ventilator beds available for the entire population. I imagine many locals were terrified.

allboysherebutme · 12/05/2022 21:54

I would much rather enjoy a British holiday, than go abroad and no airports, flying ect.
100% prefer st Ives or something similar. X

iklboo · 12/05/2022 21:55

I love Cornwall. I have loads of happy memories of holidays there and we're going in June. It's beautiful, culturally fascinating, incredible history. It's own language & Parliament - what's not to love. I'd sooner go to Cornwall than shlump on a beach in a 'Brits Abroad' resort. But each to their own, of course.

allboysherebutme · 12/05/2022 21:56

Dorset is beautiful too, Lulworth cove ect. X

Tryhard40 · 12/05/2022 21:57

I'm paying £6k to stay in a lovely 4 bedroom cottage for 2 weeks in July - we absolutely love it there. We have a brilliant time every year, beautiful beaches and so much to do, so many different pretty towns and villages to visit and different activities for the dc's.
Going abroad can be so stressful - I hate the palaver at the airport especially since covid, the car-hire debacle then the 2 hour drive to the resort (and inevitably getting lost on the way) and nothing to do except sitting baking next to the pool every day and having to smother the kids in factor 50 and insect repellent every 5 mins. Give me beautiful Cornwall any day. I presume OP you are someone who prefers a £200 quid all inclusive type holiday in Benidorm? 😂

so those of us who live in big tourist cities can be as rude as fuck to holidaymakers because they might have the audacity to get ill while on holiday and need hospital treatment in our local hospital.
okaaay….

£1600 for a basic cottage in Cornwall is not a Cornish problem but a British problem. Britain is stupidly expensive for average facilities. Best example is the ridiculous train fares for often unreliable services.

I wonder how many of those 7 were used at the same time and for how long?

interferringma · 12/05/2022 22:03

The Cornish ICU beds figure is a little off. Bude is in Cornwall but far, far nearer Exeter than Truro. So patients would go to Devon. Likewise patients in Looe or Launceston would go to Plymouth's Derriford.

Absolutely agree. Love Dorset. We took our camper there last summer. Much less pretentious than Cornwall.

The OP hasn't mentioned AI or Benidorm, so not sure why you so sneeringly mention them!?! Do you think spending 6K on your UK holiday somehow makes you superior? 😂

Crikeyalmighty · 12/05/2022 22:12

Hugely overpriced, and whilst certain towns are perfectly nice , Personally for me I think it's poor value with a lot of second rate accommodation and very expensive too . Why not just go to Dorset or Tenby or Hastings or Whitstable or Broadstairs ? Similar in looks- without the huge distances to get there and not so expensive. Personally as OP said I would take Greece every time and think it's hugely hyped up

Luculentus · 12/05/2022 22:13

St Ives is absolutely beautiful, but if your friend is paying those prices for a one bedroomed cottage in June it must be pretty luxurious - it's nothing like that expensive out of season. It won't be that crowded at that time of year, either.

Agreed! We never have and never will take our main holiday in the UK.
it’s not just cost though. I love being in a different country with different language food and customs.
That’s what a holiday is for me!
