why do people pay stupid amounts to holiday here?
I nearly spat my coffee out in work today. A co worker has paid £1600 for a week in st Ives, last week of June!

she showed me it! It’s a pretty basic, one bedroomed cottage. Wtf!!

i have booked flights and an Airbnb in greece for just over £1000. I’ll admit I never holiday in the uk, because it just doesn’t feel like a proper holiday to me, but if I do it’s always a deal/ bargain Airbnb type thing.

what’s the attraction of Cornwall?
By all accounts it’s overcrowded cost a fortune to park , and eat out, and a pretty mediocre experience all round!

@JengaNonConfirming I think it's a very middle class thing to spend mental money going on a UK holiday - and extremely snobby too to say bet you would be happy with a £200 break to Benidorm- actually I'm pretty middle class, know Benidorm well and yep as it has a lovely old town and a great train service along the coast- I can enjoy that too. I don't dislike Cornwall but just wouldn't pick it for the kind of money people are paying.

interferringma · 12/05/2022 22:17

Steady on @P0larexpress
I live in Cornwall and am not pretentious! What makes it pretentious in your view?

LizzieSiddal · 12/05/2022 22:18

I’m on holiday for a few days in St Ives now!

Have been here numerous times both with Dc and just with DH. We absolutely love it. And there is usually very decent weather, you can get very good, reasonably priced food and the place is just beautiful. On a sunny day you cannot beat it imo.

However we never come during peak times so don’t know what it’s like then. I should imagine it’s extremely busy!

Want2beme · 12/05/2022 22:19

I've been asking that same question for years. I cannot relate.

Benjispruce4 · 12/05/2022 22:20

I love Cornwall but wouldn’t go in summer holidays as it’s way overpriced and too packed. I agree about cottage rentals. I don’t know who these owners think they are!

Yeah I live in Cornwall and I agree. I have no idea why people come here tbh.

Gregsprinkles · 12/05/2022 22:24

tryhard what a snob you are! And your experiences of going abroad seem, er, limited? It's fine to try one type of holiday and decide it's not for you, but it doesn't mean that all holidays abroad consist of getting lost on way to resort and sitting by pool all day or whatever nonsense you said

Well travelled friends of mine went to benidorm recently and said it was one of their best holidays and intend to return soon.

I'm paying £6k to stay in a lovely 4 bedroom cottage for 2 weeks in July - we absolutely love it there. We have a brilliant time every year, beautiful beaches and so much to do, so many different pretty towns and villages to visit and different activities for the dc's.
Going abroad can be so stressful - I hate the palaver at the airport especially since covid, the car-hire debacle then the 2 hour drive to the resort (and inevitably getting lost on the way) and nothing to do except sitting baking next to the pool every day and having to smother the kids in factor 50 and insect repellent every 5 mins. Give me beautiful Cornwall any day. I presume OP you are someone who prefers a £200 quid all inclusive type holiday in Benidorm? 😂

Crikey! All that money to throw at a cottage holiday and not being able to negotiate your way to an airport.
I think you’re better off never venturing too far from home.

Some of the best tapas I ever had was in the old town in benidorm and I have been all over Spain including Granada and Seville!

Cornwall is beautiful and the people lovely but not during school holidays. £6k on a cottage on Cornwall - are you mad?

When I'm on holiday it's not to have to shop and cook! I really don't get SC - it's a busman's holiday.

user1497787065 · 12/05/2022 22:42

I am from Devon and think both Devon and Cornwall are beautiful counties.

However after being given an overnight stay and dinner in a hotel as a gift and also spending a fortune on a hotel in Cheshire for a wedding we decided we would never holiday in the UK as good hotels are just too expensive.

We haven't been away since 2019 but hope to go to Seville, Cadiz and Granada in the autumn. I know Spain isn't for everyone but at least your enjoyment is rarely dependent on weather.

niki26 · 12/05/2022 22:42

I love both Greece and Cornwall!

We have booked a New York trip in December but the other day I was thinking 'actually - I really would like to do something in the summer too...' but I needed to renew my eldest daughters passport and get one for my 20 month old. I've read the threads on here and wasn't prepared to risk booking a holiday abroad before sorting passports so decided to look into Cornwall. Plus I'm half Cornish and haven't seen my Gran since October when we went for my grandads funeral so it will be lovely to see her. It's expensive. £1200 for 4 nights.

My daughter breaks up earlier than mainstream schools so we are going mid July so will hopefully miss it being mega busy. Certainly the accommodation was double the price for the following week!

So ultimately I would have gone abroad if it weren't for the passport issue - but to be honest my youngest never met her great grandad due to Covid and any opportunity to spend with her great grandmother will be welcomed. I appreciate that many others aren't in the same position though so don't have the same predicament!

(P.s I have now sent off the passport applications in readiness for December!)

FrownedUpon · 12/05/2022 22:42

I love Cornwall. Why does it matter to you what someone else pays for their holiday. Surely you’re able to understand that different people like different holidays.

Eyesofdisarray · 12/05/2022 22:52

Have had some lovely holidays in Cornwall and Devon but I really love Dorset♥️
And Norfolk. And Northumberland
But love love love Greece- not in August though and hate the airport bit😕

RosesAndHellebores · 12/05/2022 22:53

More than 20 years ago we had three wonderful holidays in Cornwall when the DC were small. They were easy holidays, Readymoney Bay was close, there was tons to do with the DC, the local restaurants were good, the Hall walk was fabulous as were some other local beaches, especially the ones difficult to reach other than by boat.

Marvellous bucket and spade holidays. Although I must confess one holiday was three weeks and in 2002 was about £3k for a two bed cottage. A brilliant holiday though.

Douzy · 12/05/2022 22:53

My Great Aunt says things like this, usually while boasting about something (a little like in tryhard 's post).

It makes me cringe. No gentility whatsoever.

BorisJohnsonatemyhampster · 12/05/2022 23:13

Cornwall is pretty but I won’t pay lots of money for a main holiday where the weathers hit and miss and some of the service is shonky.

Plus I haven’t forgotten how some of the locals carried on during Covid. Down right fucking rude about ‘their’ beaches and screaming about outsiders particularly Londoners (because everyone from south east is from London apparently and everyone knows Londoners carry special London strains of Covid FFS).

AllMyExesWearRolexes · 12/05/2022 23:15

Go to Camborne, you'll love it there!

SnowWhitesSM · 12/05/2022 23:18

I go to Cornwall every year and have done since I was born. My dads side are all cornish. I honestly feel like I'm at peace and at home when I get into Cornwall. Wales coast line is really similar to Cornwall and I love Wales, but I don't get the coming home feeling.

@BorisJohnsonatemyhampster - when omicron first hit, it had a massive hot spot in London - and the cases of covid in Cornwall sky rocketed after the G9 summit there. So the Cornish did have a fair point. My cousin lives down there and said the covid rates were tiny before and then it felt like everyone caught it.

Momicrone · 13/05/2022 04:48

Cornwall and Greece are both lovely, Cornwall however is just a train ride away

Momicrone · 13/05/2022 04:50

Corsicadreaming - no they did not have a fair point, given that people in built up areas just had to suck it up

CeeJay81 · 13/05/2022 05:23

Never been to Cornwall because it takes longer than going to Greece. When you don't drive, Cornwall takes too long to get to from a lot of the UK. I'm sure it's nice though. Going to Greece in 11 days. Won't go in August when it's too hot. Greece(Crete esp) is amazing. Love the people, food and architecture. We all love different places though, maybe one day I'll go to Cornwall but a 8 hour train journey isn't worth it.
