Cornwall!!

why do people pay stupid amounts to holiday here?
I nearly spat my coffee out in work today. A co worker has paid £1600 for a week in st Ives, last week of June!

she showed me it! It’s a pretty basic, one bedroomed cottage. Wtf!!

i have booked flights and an Airbnb in greece for just over £1000. I’ll admit I never holiday in the uk, because it just doesn’t feel like a proper holiday to me, but if I do it’s always a deal/ bargain Airbnb type thing.

what’s the attraction of Cornwall?
By all accounts it’s overcrowded cost a fortune to park , and eat out, and a pretty mediocre experience all round!

I think there are just some people who like Cornwall.

My brother lives in Cornwall and goes to Normandy or Brittany for holidays, I just think they are going to the same place with a different language.

interferringma · 13/05/2022 10:33

Cornwall does seem to be very Marmite. You don't get threads like this about Kent or Norfolk or Staffordshire or Bedfordshire. But Cornwall threads are regular!

Onwards22 · 13/05/2022 11:13

I think it’s odd how bitter you sound over Cornwall and there’s definitely a jealousy issue with you. I wonder if you have family or friends going this year.

If you don’t like somewhere - don’t go.

I personally wouldn’t go to Antarctica even though it’s beautiful as I can’t cope with the cold - I’m not going to start a thread over it as no one’s forcing me to go.

iklboo · 13/05/2022 11:16

@Nephilim77 - we're going to Lizard Point in June. Is there anywhere you'd particularly recommend for seeing / eating out?

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 13/05/2022 11:36

I'm never going back to Cornwall after being abused for having the audacity to be walking along the road there once and being an apparently obvious English tourist.

The combination of hostile locals, high prices and it being overrun with some lamentable specimens of my fellow humans makes it very low down on my list of places to ever go back to.

You should all come to Northern Ireland for your holidays, there's sea view air bnbs plenty & since I moved back here 10 years ago, I don't think I've been stuck in traffic for more than 20 minutes behind a tractor.

I hate the sound of overcrowded little streets & difficult to park, although would like to see Cornwall sometime.

The stress of paying so much more for mediocre stuff would seriously piss me off. I just can't imagine it would that much nicer than the many beaches I can get to within 30-40 minutes of my own house

shussshhhhhh! Don't tell everyone.

I love the Antrim coast - but it was a bit busy last time I went to Portrush and Port Stewart in July :)

The Halzephron Inn always does a good meal, that’s in Gunwalloe, near the lizard, and further on from there is a beautiful quiet cove, Church Cove, definitely worth a visit. So many places to eat around Lizard. Lots of little villages. Do go and visit Kynance Cove too turquoise sea. Mullion is another lovely cove and village worth visiting. I’m sure you’ll fall in love with the place! Enjoy!

seasaltstripes · 13/05/2022 13:18

Some unnecessarily vitriolic comments about Cornwall on here in my opinion. I'm one of 'them' - 'a local' from a Cornish coastal town. I can assure you I've never told a tourist to fuck off, and to the best of my knowledge neither have any of my friends here. We might moan to each other a bit about the number of people and cars in the summer, but I understand that it's a good thing that we have a thriving tourist industry and I feel lucky to live in such a beautiful place. There are half a million of us, and while some of us are difficult and unpleasant people and some of us are occasionally grumpy if we're having a bad day, I'd argue that's true of any group of half a million people. I fully understand that a Cornish holiday is not everyone's cup of tea, and I agree that getting here from upcountry in high summer can be pretty grim, but I really do think some of the comments are needlessly othering and unpleasant.

@iklboo Second all of @Nephilim77's comments. I'd also recommend the cafe right at Lizard point (I can't remember the name). It looks like it might be a real tourist trap - most Southerly cafe in the UK etc etc - but it's lovely and the outdoor tables on a good day are a very happy place to be. Make sure you eat some Roskilly's ice cream and do lots of walking on the coastpath!

iklboo · 13/05/2022 13:21

@Nephilim77 @seasaltstripes - thank you! We'll definitely check those out. We're going outside of school holidays (DS finishes school for good in mid-June eeep) so we're looking forward to a nice relaxing break.

Spidey66 · 13/05/2022 13:25

I love Cornwall in general* *and St Ives in particular. Horses for courses.

Dianaofthelakeofshiningwaters · 13/05/2022 13:26

@Seasaltstripes - another Cornish resident here and I wouldn't take it to heart.

These threads are as regular as the Cornish rain - always hostile locals, crap food, crap service blah blah blah .... rinse and repeat.

Must now get back to polishing my pitchfork and practising my swearing in preparation for half-term 😏😂

NeverDropYourMooncup · 13/05/2022 13:43

BorisJohnsonatemyhampster · 12/05/2022 23:13

Cornwall is pretty but I won’t pay lots of money for a main holiday where the weathers hit and miss and some of the service is shonky.

Plus I haven’t forgotten how some of the locals carried on during Covid. Down right fucking rude about ‘their’ beaches and screaming about outsiders particularly Londoners (because everyone from south east is from London apparently and everyone knows Londoners carry special London strains of Covid FFS).

Well, we did - Delta and Omicron.

It's why we haven't been back home since all this started; no desire to be responsible for decimating the population of DP's village.

The church hasn't been so busy with services for probably about a century.

APurpleSquirrel · 13/05/2022 13:46

I love Cornwall. We were meant to go in May half term 2020; Covid meant it got pushed forward to 2021. We had a wonderful time. We stayed in a self-catering cottage on a farm (for 4 people) on Bodmin that cost under £400 for the week. I checked the prices for this year & it's barely changed. It was basic but we didn't plan on being there much other than to sleep.
Yes there's lots of people, but we never had any problems parking or getting around. We had amazing weather the entire week, got some great food, & the beaches were lovely - big enough to not feel crowded.
We're going again this half term & actually staying on the coast & really looking forward to it.
It does help, though, that we live in Somerset, & the drive is only 2hrs or so.

DigitalGoat · 13/05/2022 13:49

I vowed I wouldn't go abroad again after the covid related hassle we had on our much delayed (booked before covid) holiday in Europe last year.

Tried to book a week in UK at the end of June. Ridiculous prices. Didn't fancy Cornwall anyway after the vitriol aimed at visitors during Covid. Yes I appreciate pandemic etc etc but it legitimised some very anti visitor sentiment that was presumably always there under the surface and I'm not tempted to return

Vow went out of the window, we're off to Norway instead.

seasaltstripes · 13/05/2022 13:49

@Dianaofthelakeofshiningwaters you are quite right. I find it odd more than upsetting - the talking about them/us as though we're a whole different type of people. I know people don't just do it about the Cornish though (see 'all Londoners are stuck-up/unfriendly' etc etc), but we seem to get an awful lot of it on here.

BashStreetKid · 13/05/2022 15:43

I love Cornwall and used to take the children to St Ives regularly. For us it was the perfect venue - three fabulous beaches within walking distance, lots of other things to amuse the children like boat trips etc plus various places nearby, but enough in terms of art etc to keep adults sane. It did however ultimately get too expensive in the school summer holidays.

DH and I went back fairly recently and this time stayed in a cottage on a farm in the middle of nowhere. Despite our previous visits, it was a bit of a revelation: it was so peaceful and there was very little traffic, and all the wild flowers in the verges were just a delight. The cottage was around £400 for the week and was really comfortable. There's always something new to discover round there.

I do occasionally like a Devon or Cornwall holiday. Agreed it's not the same as an all inclusive abroad but that doesn't float everyone's boat either.

The prices have become ridiculous, I'm from the SW and have friends who stayed who are struggling to find somewhere to rent as landlords can make a lot more as an air bnb.

interferringma · 13/05/2022 16:27

@iklboo another Lizard area resident here. Lovely restaurants in Porthleven. And world class walk round Loe Pool. Slightly further west the beaches at Rinsey and Kennegy and Prussia Cove are superb, depending on tide state. And the beaches on the Helford are incredible. Obv not all yellow sands. But classy and remote and gorgeous if Yiu know how to reach them.

interferringma · 13/05/2022 16:32

The trouble with a cornwall is most folk head for the same places, and so of course they're crowded and get yucky. Which is why I avoid places like Perranporth, Newquay and (sorry!) St Ives. Lands End is also a no brainer to avoid; it's tacky as heck.
But other places in the UK are gorgeous too. We don't have a monopoly on beauty by a long way!

VestaTilley · 13/05/2022 17:05

I’m alarmed you can’t conceive of other people liking different things to you.

I love Cornwall and Devon, and would go each year if I could. It’s not at all overcrowded everywhere, or impossible to drive - if it were people wouldn’t go. The beaches are superb, and there are some lovely days out to be had, as well as sailing.

I agree with you re the price, but that’s holidaying in summer for you. It’s a shame as cottage holidays used to be more affordable.

SafelySoftly · 13/05/2022 17:15

It’s called taking responsibility for canon footprint and future generations. We have a beautiful country to explore 🙄

Oh please! I bet if you loved foreign holidays you'd be less concerned about your carbon footprint. It's fine to enjoy UK holidays and just say that without the eco warrior bullshit.

GinIronic · 13/05/2022 17:53

I don't understand why people pay so much for St Ives. My in-laws live there and it's a nightmare during the summer. Overcrowded with rude visitors who think that Cornwall is a theme park. Then there's the rampaging seagulls, expensive food and no where to park. No thanks.

TheWayoftheLeaf · 13/05/2022 18:07

Because when the weather is right the beaches/vibes/havens are breathtaking.
