How to tell someone their knickers are showing ?

I really don't want to sound like a bitch 😩. There's a woman at work who started a couple of weeks ago. I'm on a secondment she keeps wearing see through leggings and you can see her top tucked into her knickers , we are in a patient facing role. I really don't want to hurt her feelings but I feel like it's just a matter of time before a patient or relative says something. How do you tell someone sensitively ?

Just say “your leggings are a bit see-through”

Pashazade · 11/05/2022 07:07

Make sure you're somewhere where you can't be overheard and tell her "I wasn't sure if you realised but your knickers are visible through your legging, thought I ought to let you know". What she then chooses to do with the information is up to her. Just keep it discreet.

Buffyismyaltaego · 11/05/2022 07:24

Tell her for goodness sake to save her the embarrassment.

I once stopped my car and wound down the window to tell a woman at the bus stop her top label hadn't been cut out and was hanging out the back. She was on her way to a date and most grateful someone told her.

She probably isn't aware at all

EmeraldShamrock1 · 11/05/2022 07:28

Maybe she doesn't care if anyone can see underwear through faded leggings.

I wouldn't say anything.

I'm sure people have noticed my underwear it doesn't bother me unless there was a hole in my leggings.

iheartmybeachhut · 11/05/2022 07:38

Discreet word then she can deal with or ignore.
Living in a popular tourist area near the beach we see any manner of clothing styles and wardrobe malfunctions, it's not really that probmatic but in a working environment is different.

Tell her but at the end of the shift otherwise she will worry all day and not much she can do about it then

NotMyselfWithoutCoffee · 11/05/2022 07:45

@EmeraldShamrock1

Sorry not sure why my comment didn't post.

Surely it's different in a professional environment, if I was a patient I would feel uncomfortable if a carer or whatever was walking down with her knickers exposed.

Mind you I hate seeing it walking down the street, how hard is it to cover up with a long Tshirt 🤢

JamSandwich89 · 11/05/2022 07:46

I'd tell her at the end of her shift. If you tell her earlier on she might not be able to do anything about it for ages and could feel self-conscious/embarrassing about it for a while in front of everyone 😬

5128gap · 11/05/2022 07:48

I wouldn't say anything. Women know how leggings work. After all we see other women in see through leggings all the time. Those of us who are bothered by it check our rear view. Those of us who don't think its a big deal just get on with it. If a patient complains or her manager thinks it's inappropriate then she'll be told. (Unless you are her manager, in which case I'd suggest you tell her at her supervision if you feel its relevant to her work performance.)

Giveitall · 11/05/2022 07:50

Oh dear, it’s cringeworthy but not your business.
Stay out of
Possibly mention to her line manager?

EmeraldShamrock1 · 11/05/2022 07:51

Work environment is different, unless you're their superior I'd say nothing.

Tbf I don't intentionally show my underwear however it happens when a pair of leggings fade, once I notice I bin them.

Hospedia · 11/05/2022 07:54

Are you her manager? If so then do as PP have suggested, tell her in a private room right before the end of her shift . Phrase it around dress code rules as there should be something in there about visible underwear/appropriate clothing (check them beforehand so you know the actual phrasing).

If you're not her manager then raise it with whoever is as that's their job to deal with it, not yours.

RaininSummer · 11/05/2022 07:59

Sounds like the wrong clothing for work in any case. Needs a longer top.

purplesequins · 11/05/2022 07:59

if you are her manager/supervisor you need to tell her.

she needs to be made aware, and maybe you need to have a look at the clothing policy. we have a simple one that says torso must be covered and underwear must not be visible. plus patient facing you probably have bare-below-elbow as well.

if you are not her manager/supervisor make them aware and ask them to speak to her.

iheartmybeachhut · 11/05/2022 08:01

A cheese wire and wobbly buttocks in thin leggings are disturbing enough, def don't want to look at that in a work envioronment

BaaMoon · 11/05/2022 08:02

If you're going to say something do it near the end of a shift preferably before she's off so she has time to buy new stuff if needed. And try to not sound like you've been looking at her bum.

Pottedpalm · 11/05/2022 08:04

I don’t subscribe to the view that leggings are outerwear. In my opinion they should be worn with a tunic, skirt or dress, unless being worn for sport or exercise.
I don’t think it’s appropriate to wear thin, form sculpting garments in public, especially in a work setting. All too often the shape on view is a hefty lardy arse and if the leggings are so thin as to be see through then it’s even more revolting.

BaaMoon · 11/05/2022 08:06

@Pottedpalm Sizest much? If it bothers you stop oggling people's bums.

Rubyupbeat · 11/05/2022 08:10

Please tell her, she may not care, or she may be so embarrassed by it.
I will always tell someone, in a discreet and kind way, as I picture myself in their position.
My greatest fear is having a bogey hanging out and not realising it.

donttalkaboutbookclub · 11/05/2022 08:11

Just tell her as pp have said. Don't tell the manager to tell her as it will seem like a telling off as she's just started.

Lockheart · 11/05/2022 08:14

It's not appropriate to have your knickers on show in most places, let alone a work environment.

I'd take her to one side quietly at the end of a shift like others have said.

I'd consider whether it's better to tell her line manager, if that's not you. If her line manager is friendly and approachable that's one thing, but it may be uncomfortable for everyone involved if her line manager is an older man, for example.

iheartmybeachhut · 11/05/2022 08:25

Baa check out the meaning of 'ogle' I don't think anyone would agree that potted is ogling. She happens to be right imo.

Scabbyknackers · 11/05/2022 08:26

Take her to one side at the end of a shift and just tell her that she might not have realised but in the bright lights of the ward or wherever, her leggings are see through.

I'm assuming you're not a man with a name like fifi and concerned about being a bitch (you're not being at all) but just in case you are, and not her LM, it might be better to mention it to an approachable female manager instead.

Ducksinthebath · 11/05/2022 08:27

Whatever you do say, don’t paint yourself into a corner by giving an unrealistic picture of dress code rules. A PP suggested saying no visible underwear. If that’s not the rule, don’t pretend it is. You could find yourself hoist by your own petard.
