How to tell someone their knickers are showing ?

I really don't want to sound like a bitch 😩. There's a woman at work who started a couple of weeks ago. I'm on a secondment she keeps wearing see through leggings and you can see her top tucked into her knickers , we are in a patient facing role. I really don't want to hurt her feelings but I feel like it's just a matter of time before a patient or relative says something. How do you tell someone sensitively ?

"How! Pet! Your kecks are showing"

Thefaroeislands · 11/05/2022 12:26

@Lockheart but 120 years ago it wasn’t appropriate for a woman to wear trousers. If she was wearing a see through skirt like the infamous Diana picture would anyone say anything? I doubt it. If there is no dress code that says she can’t wear leggings then the fact that you can see her knickers through them is irrelevant. It is apparently fashionable.

We're not 120 years ago. If in another 120 years it's fine for us all to be wandering around the supermarket naked then that's that, but right now we're talking about what's appropriate today, which is that having your knickers and arse on show is usually considered inappropriate, whether it's leggings or a diaphanous skirt. Especially at work.

TunaSalad · 11/05/2022 12:34

I hate this look and can't believe people don't know, we see it on everyone else.

It's worse when the knickers are white or patterned. (In my opinion)

I would say something at the end of the shift just in case but honestly surely she knows.

Billandben444 · 11/05/2022 13:36

I would say at the end of the shift - Did you know your leggings are see through? And then walk away. I stopped for petrol on the way to work and thought it was a bit drafty, the bloke at the pump next to me said - Do you know your skirt's tucked in your knickers? And then he drove away. No embarrassment cos nobody witnessed my blushes.

JaneJeffer · 11/05/2022 13:42

Say "nice knickers where did you get them from?"

Potted is correct. Leggings are not trousers. And, a bit like spandex and lycra, should be a privilege not a right.

Says you 🙄

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 11/05/2022 14:07

She knows.

I work with legging/footless tights wearers.

They know.

SleepingStandingUp · 11/05/2022 14:24

EmeraldShamrock1 · 11/05/2022 07:28

Maybe she doesn't care if anyone can see underwear through faded leggings.

I wouldn't say anything.

I'm sure people have noticed my underwear it doesn't bother me unless there was a hole in my leggings.

That's totally inappropriate in a patient facing role.

Anon778833 · 11/05/2022 14:29

I really wouldn’t say anything - how does it affect you?

🤣 and breathe 🤣🤣🤣

Honestly OP I imagine she does know, give her a polite heads up just in case. A line manager does not need to be made aware. Good grief!

Thefaroeislands · 11/05/2022 12:04

@5128gap. Totally agree. I told my boss that she had period leak on her trousers…..I’d want someone to do the same for me- ditto loo roll hanging out, snot at the end of my nose, knickers tucked in my pants. That is entirely different to ‘you should wear different clothes because I don’t want to see your knickers/arse’ however nicely you choose to phrase it.

Period leak is very different.

erikbloodaxe · 11/05/2022 14:38

I'd rather see her knickers than a camel's toe or moose knuckle.
I had a colleague who had a thing for younger men (she was 63) and came to work in leggings sporting an upside down McDonalds sign from the front.
She was happy although the young male colleagues looked frightened 🤣

Lockheart · 11/05/2022 15:12

The responses saying it doesn't matter / how does it affect you / she knows, it's none of your business are interesting.

If a man was wearing tight see-through leggings so you could see his pants, around patients / clients or just in public generally, he'd probably be labelled a pervert or predator.

But when women do it, it's "just the fashion"?

Don't get me started on the trend for teenage boys to have their trousers slung so low their arse is totally out of the top of their trousers...

Sunnytwobridges · 11/05/2022 15:21

Pottedpalm · 11/05/2022 08:04

I don’t subscribe to the view that leggings are outerwear. In my opinion they should be worn with a tunic, skirt or dress, unless being worn for sport or exercise.
I don’t think it’s appropriate to wear thin, form sculpting garments in public, especially in a work setting. All too often the shape on view is a hefty lardy arse and if the leggings are so thin as to be see through then it’s even more revolting.

Agreed. I'm shocked at so many people that wear them in a business setting and don't cover their arses. Its very unprofessional.

PassThePringles · 11/05/2022 15:35

I doubt she knows. I used to see a young woman on the school run who's leggings were so thin you could see every freckle and dimple through them. She was always with a couple of friends and it pained me that none of them seem to have gave her a heads up. If I had an opportunity alone with her, I'd definitely have told her. Not that I thought less of her for it but more so she can choose whether she's comfortable with everyone seeing what she basically looks like naked from the waist down. I'd want to know.

Checking in the house is different to daylight/ bright shop lighting. I'd suggest approaching your colleague in a friendly and light way in private. Wouldn't involve anyone else.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 11/05/2022 15:38

Butt out 😂

Mandodari · 11/05/2022 15:46

I would be wary of speaking directly to her unless you are her line manager. Last thing you want is to be accused of bullying, such an easy claim to make. Do you have a HR manager? They could send a friendly reminder of suitable attire in the work place. My company did, had to remind people of what is suitable for working from home might not be suitable for the office and sent a does and don't of business casual attire.

Did they? What a bunch of limp lettuces they must be to be frightened by a woman in leggings.

Lazyinred · 11/05/2022 16:58

Say 'good morning Leggings Lorraine!, Nice drawers! I've got knickers like those to! Great minds eh'..... seriously if you feel uncomfortable saying anything ask your team leader or manager to do it otherwise just ignore it. 😁

erikbloodaxe · 11/05/2022 17:59

@5128gap

To be fair it was a monster vulva she was purposely displaying. It really wasn't a good look at all.

newtb · 11/05/2022 18:14

You could tell her saying a patient had said something.

PortalooSunset · 11/05/2022 19:11

I'd check/have a pointed conversation with another colleague within earshot about the uniform regulations. I don't think leggings (see through or not) are professional attire.

LoveSpringDaffs · 12/05/2022 10:24

Ducksinthebath · 11/05/2022 08:55

Her top tucked into her knickers?? How old is she, 2??

Doesn't everyone do this to get a nice smooth waistline in high waisted trousers?

Tucking my top into my knickers stopped when I could dress myself & I never do it for kids once they're past the toddling stage.

...tops into ski leggings before salopets, sure, but everyday knickers, no! Besides it being weird, how sturdy are your knickers to do anything useful???

Loyaultemelie · 12/05/2022 10:38

I would try and tell her discretely, my darling kitten had managed to put a hole in the back of mine and I was very grateful when a neighbour at the bottom of the lane warned me before we got to the road dog walking
