Peas! Angry

Lasagne night in the Hashbrown household and we are reminiscing about the time my DH (then bf) made a lasagne and not only out peas in the mince mixture, but served them as a side too.

I literally did consider strongly ending our relationship at that point.

To this day, he maintains it's a normal thing to have in/with lasagne?!

AIBU?

As a side note, I always serve it with mixed salad and either garlic bread or if I'm being proper porky, chips too!

Ex MIL once made "spaghetti lasagne". She'd run out of lasagne sheets so made a sort of pasta bake (fine) but called it spaghetti lasagne (weird).

My mum (Maltese) used to make us spaghetti omelettes when we were small. It was the 70s.

I was given lasagne with a side of mash while on maternity ward after having DD and whilst it should have been wrong, it was one of the nicest meals in memory. Was probably the hormones!!

tuliplover · 08/05/2022 22:07

I don't put mince in my lasagna. Nor bechamel sauce.

Fairislefandango · 08/05/2022 22:10

Most people are not making Sicilian Lasagne are they? They’re making Lasagne al Forno which is from the Emilia-Romagna as a PP mentioned.

Confused All lasagne is 'al forno' - it just means cooked in the oven! Where else do you think people are cooking their lasagne? In a saucepan on the hob?

glukoo · 08/05/2022 22:16

Peas on the side fine not in the sauce though!! Toms, onion, garlic, mushrooms, herbs, purée all blended is a lasagne sauce. Peas or salad, chips or g bread on side.

My DH once made a lasagne with no tomato based sauce. It was dry mince, lasagne sheets and white sauce layered and topped with cheese. It was an interesting meal... maybe peas would have moistened that one!

I once had a “lasagne” that was just boiled vegetables in between layers of lasagne pasta. It was…hard going.

I first ate Lasagna in Italy in 1982, it had peas in it! I hate peas but as it was made in Italy I assume that in some areas ( this was a ski resort in the dolomites) peas are part of the recipe

I never put the things in mine

I knew someone who's family made spaghetti bolognaise with a tin of baked beans in it. It was vile

😱🤮🤮🤮🤮

SwedishEdith · 08/05/2022 22:36

Do you reckon the ones with kidney beans were where they'd just defrosted the wrong "cooked with something" mince? We had spaghetti with haggis once because I thought I was defrosting bolognese sauce it was nice

Justanotherlurker · 08/05/2022 22:40

My OH is italian and his grandmother used to make a traditional lasagna with peas which has been pased down, it is obscure but it's not a bastardisation of a recipie, It's not right or wrong but it does have routes in italian cooking

RosesAndHellebores · 08/05/2022 22:54

Well I wouldn’t fancy lasagne with peas within or without. However I do like it that everyone has a different spag bol/ragu recipe and it's one of the things that makes mum's dinners the best because they bring an element of reminiscence.

So many times I have made a ragu the traditional way with sofrito, passata and/or tomatoes and Mince of course. The family aren't madly keen but they do really like my own recipe which is: chopped onion, good quality Mince, generous glass of red, tin of good quality tomatoes, squirt of puree, oregano and bay leaves. I'm not saying it's correct but it's what we like.

However, pasta dishes need a mixed salad, we'll dressed. Pasta does not need chips or garlic bread - I'd rather have peas.

This thread has reminded me of the Gino Dicampo (sp) and Holly Willoughby programme where HW says "if you out a bit if ham in that it will be like an English Carbonara and Gino retorts "if my grandmother had wheels she'd be a bicycle". I wish I could paste a link because it's much much funnier than I have just related.

A few years ago I went through a stage of experimenting with what to put In a lasagna.
I once addedLincolnshire sausages and bacon and it was a game changer 😂 Idon't do it anymore, because of the cost and that it was just far to much meat, but it was delicious.

This thread is the funniest shit I read all day.

WeAreTheHeroes · 09/05/2022 21:15

@RosesAndHellebores I saw that clip again over the weekend somewhere and it is one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

Mmm lasagna and chips and garlic bread and peas and…ketchup! Yum

Neu · 09/05/2022 21:26

I love a pea sided lasagne! Not in. Never in. But mmmmm yes on the side. Shoot me 😆

Allthe4s · 09/05/2022 21:54

Authentic or not, I’m not sure about peas in most things unless it’s very quickly cooked. Casseroles, lasagne and pie type stuff I wouldn’t put peas in because they get over cooked and end up that really pale colour. Now peas on the side that retain a green crispness - lovely.

Personally I only eat salad on the side of my lasagne. It’s very rich and needs a bit of freshness/balsamic to cut through. Even as a self confessed glutton I’d struggle with chips/bread on the side, but I can see why people do 😉
