Lasagne should never see...

Peas! Angry

Lasagne night in the Hashbrown household and we are reminiscing about the time my DH (then bf) made a lasagne and not only out peas in the mince mixture, but served them as a side too.

I literally did consider strongly ending our relationship at that point.

To this day, he maintains it's a normal thing to have in/with lasagne?!

AIBU?

As a side note, I always serve it with mixed salad and either garlic bread or if I'm being proper porky, chips too!

Celery! Who the hell thinks celery in a lasagne is a good idea!

The Italians.

Quite!

I'm intrigued as to what people put in their ragu if they don't use celery, onion and carrot.

Litthefirealready · 08/05/2022 18:12

I stopped ordering lasagne in Portugal after receiving the dish with ham many times. Utterly disgusting! Why would anyone put ham in a lasagne?

Libertaire · 08/05/2022 18:13

My Italian friend despairs whenever she sees lasagne & chips on pub menus. Nobody in Italy would ever serve Lasagna al forno with chips, she insists. It’s a complete dish in itself, but if you must have an accompaniment, it should only ever be an inslalata verde.

I then ask her what she, as a Calabrian, would know about how a dish from Emilia-Romagna should be served. It’s a bit like a Yorkshire person giving their opinion on the best way to serve a Cornish Pasty.

CheshireCats · 08/05/2022 18:14

Often serve it with peas. Never chips though.

DelicateLittleBlossom · 08/05/2022 18:14

Well it's better than "bulking it out with lentils" 🤢

AlisonDonut · 08/05/2022 18:15

My OH once made lasagne [veggie for me], and put 2 tablespoons not teaspoons of cornflour in the white sauce. He literally stood the wooden spoon up in it. I had to explain cornflour. That was 17 years ago and we still chuckle. Well, I do.

RagzRebooted · 08/05/2022 18:16

I nearly always serve peas with mine - no one else in the house cares, but I love peas with lasagne (not in it). I think it's because school dinner lasagne used to come with peas and chips and it was my favourite meal. I find the peas go really well, better than salad.

WeAreTheHeroes · 08/05/2022 18:31

I was once served lasagne that had baked beans and finely chopped broccoli in it. Very strange. I was not a vegetable swerving small child at the time and it was p

WeAreTheHeroes · 08/05/2022 18:32

It was pretty awful!

maybein2022 · 08/05/2022 18:33

In the actual lasagne- absolutely not,
As a side- perfectly normal.

choirmumoftwo · 08/05/2022 18:36

My MIL (now sadly deceased) used to put small sausages in bolognese sauce. Very strange.

TheDogsMother · 08/05/2022 18:37

Chips should not be with a Lasagne. It wants a nice crisp salad. I have to agree that peas in it or on the side is unusual.

Rosehugger · 08/05/2022 18:39

Peas? Does he think lasagne is cottage pie, or that all mince-based dishes are interchangeable?

kerosene20 · 08/05/2022 18:42

This has reminded me of friends where rachel makes a mix of cottage pie and trifle 🤣 I would never put them in lasagne or on the side tbh but I think they’re acceptable on the side.

doadeer · 08/05/2022 18:43

I'm fine with peas in. I would always try to add veg or serve with veg otherwise it's not very healthy. Would never make it with chips Blush

Irishfarmer · 08/05/2022 18:44

No peas do not go in lasagne. On the side maybe if I am trying to eat more vegi's I have sprouts/ cauliflower/ peas with half my meals tho.

Featuredcreature · 08/05/2022 18:46

Eew I feel, the same way about misplaced sweetcorn. Nasty.

Butchyrestingface · 08/05/2022 18:48

I eat peas as a side with lasagne as my default.

Come at me, haterz.

Georgyporky · 08/05/2022 18:49

I stick to an authentic recipe - so no peas. But deffo the soffrito base.

Having bread or spuds with a pasta dish is weird - one carb at a time is enough.

linerforlife · 08/05/2022 18:49

I like peas as a side to lasagne. Not in them though!!

Featuredcreature · 08/05/2022 18:50

Lasagne with chips is great, you can mop up the sauce with the chips. Who really cares about the opinions of random Italians when you are eating your tea.

TroysMammy · 08/05/2022 18:50

Surely a beef ragu with peas is half a shepherd's pie?

Penguinsaregreat · 08/05/2022 18:50

Peas on the side totally fine.

RaininginDarling · 08/05/2022 18:51

I'll start by saying I have a lot of opinions when it comes to lasagne. The addition of peas is obviously an abomination and should never be repeated. Spag bol on the other hand can play fast and loose in the frozen veg aisle but not lasagne. I also do NOT approve of white pasta sheets in lasagne or supermarkets who don't stock the verdi variety.

(Toasted hash brown sandwiches are my favourite hangover food. Great name btw)
