Lasagne should never see...

Peas! Angry

Lasagne night in the Hashbrown household and we are reminiscing about the time my DH (then bf) made a lasagne and not only out peas in the mince mixture, but served them as a side too.

I literally did consider strongly ending our relationship at that point.

To this day, he maintains it's a normal thing to have in/with lasagne?!

AIBU?

As a side note, I always serve it with mixed salad and either garlic bread or if I'm being proper porky, chips too!

Always put peas in lasagne. My favourite veg.

fionaapple · 08/05/2022 19:52

Peas with anything is a no😷unless they're mushy and with a chippy. But in lasagne? Should've ended the relationship on the spot😉

"Nobody in Italy would ever serve Lasagna al forno with chips, she insists."

Peas, chips, carrot - have whatever the hell you like in and with your lasagne. Just because it's an Italian dish doesn't mean you have to make it and serve it as the Italians do. They're not eating it, you are, so it's none of their business!

Also very true.

The frustration comes when people who clearly have no idea what Italians eat, or how they cook, tell other people how Italians eat and cook. All very Dunning-Kruger really.

As I said on the other thread, one of my SILs makes a white lasagne with only artichokes, my other SIL with no bechamel or cheese. My MIL will sometimes use tiny meatballs instead of Ragu. Where I am mozzarella is always used (I've been told on other lasagne threads that's not true- dp (Italian chef, in Italy) finds it hilarious) and the takeaway lasagne we buy always has ham in it. Some places put mortadella instead of ham.

Undertheoldlindentree · 08/05/2022 19:55

Best accompaniments for lasagne = green salad, peas or sweetcorn.

donquixotedelamancha · 08/05/2022 19:56

I once had a Carbonara in Airlie Beach, Australia. Now I know that sentence doesn't hold out much hope but it's far worse than you might fear.....

...trigger warning....

.... they made it with onions and a roux based white sauce. The dirty bastards.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 08/05/2022 20:02

You'd hate the tuna and pea lasagne that I sometimes cook then... Good, more for me 😋

Wiggledypiggledy · 08/05/2022 20:03

My sister in law puts baked beans in lasagne. Grim 🤢

Keladrythesaviour · 08/05/2022 20:07

Definitely no peas inside! Was he confusing beef ragù with cottage pie 🤣 I like peas on the side though.
I'd never put chopped tomatoes in my lasagna. It's a meat sauce, not a tomato sauce. Use a small amount of tomato puree for the rich sweetness, chopped tomato makes it far too wet.

Deadivy · 08/05/2022 20:07

Here in my part of Italy they put ham and mozzarella in it after we've made a basic ragù with carrots, onion and celery (soffrito)
What they don't do is serve it with Garlic bread ( which doesn't exist in Italy anyway) salad or chips.
It's a first course too, so here you just have a small slice. However, rules were made to be broken and I reckon peas sound lovely in it ( as does Garlic bread)

Celery! Who the hell thinks celery in a lasagne is a good idea!

The Italians.

I always put celery, diced carrots, onion and garlic in a pasta sauce base. Then add other things like mushrooms, tomatoes, spinach, peppers.

WeAreTheHeroes · 08/05/2022 20:12

Yes, classic soffritto in Italian cooking, mirepoix in French cooking.

He was making Sicilian lasagne.

Italians use tomato in their lasagne sauce. It's a meat AND tomato sauce. Out of curiosity, how do you get the "sauce" bit if you don't use tomato? We'd use a bottle, maybe a bottle and a half of passata or polpa for a lasagne.

Nobody really uses tomato puree though.

@Deadivy I wonder if we're neighbours?

Nameandgamechange123 · 08/05/2022 20:34

Another one here who has found kidney beans lurking. Just no.

PlasticineMeg · 08/05/2022 20:38

I am part of an Italian family and when we visited Italy as a child lasagna always had peas in it

BrownStripePJ · 08/05/2022 20:38

Bechamel

SmiledWtherisingsun · 08/05/2022 20:42

What is WONG with some people? 🙈

Peas are a side for fish pie!

Furthermore wtaf is anyone doing eating chips OR garlic bread with lasagne - aka full on carbtastic PASTA?!

A rocket & parmesan salad is the only side needed!

Sheeeesh! 🤷🏻‍♀️

JustBkind · 08/05/2022 20:43

Celery and carrots cut ultra fine to go in the bolognaise gives it loads of extra flavour and you will never now it’s there If cut fine and cooked right.
peas are a complete NO as are any other veg except salad. Garlic bread and chips if being extra extravagant!! Yum!

SmallPrawnEnergy · 08/05/2022 20:54

@Geamhradh are you paid for how many times you can say Sicilian Lasagne? We get it it’s got peas and egg in. Most people are not making Sicilian Lasagne are they? They’re making Lasagne al Forno which is from the Emilia-Romagna as a PP mentioned. So yes, please in Lasagne (al Forno) is weird.

SmallPrawnEnergy · 08/05/2022 20:56

And if he “was making Sicilian Lasagne” he would have put egg in it (which is an important ingredient in Sicilian Lasagne don’t you know)

No. Just getting fucked off by the ignorance shown.
All lasagne is al forno btw.
Try educating yourself.

TaffyandTeenyTaffy · 08/05/2022 21:05

My DH always puts peas in bolognaise... (but moans if I make it with peppers) Note to self: don't let him make lasagne!!

smith19784 · 08/05/2022 21:27

@LadyMonicaBaddingham

Tuna & pea lasagne???? Confused

I love lasagne & often grate courgette & carrot into mine. I'd defo add peas too can't see anything wrong with that. I've also been known to put baked beans in lasagne or spag hol especially if there's a half opened tin that needs using up.

ImInStealthMode · 08/05/2022 21:34

DP once put sweetcorn in a lasagna (because it needed eating and we try not to waste food).

It was fine. It was just for us. Who gives a toss?

littlegreenheart · 08/05/2022 21:41

You can end your relationship for any or no reason.

Peas and chips are normal sides for a lasagne dish if you eat out, at least in Scotland, And of course a veggie lasagne dish can have any kind of veggies in it - if there are some you dislike, just ask whoever's cooking to omit them.

ThreeLocusts · 08/05/2022 21:47

Surprised to hear lasagne needs a side at all.

There's a lovely Italian deli near us where the lasagne have peas in them. I guess the makers must be Sicilian then? Tastes fine.
