Lasagne should never see...

Peas! Angry

Lasagne night in the Hashbrown household and we are reminiscing about the time my DH (then bf) made a lasagne and not only out peas in the mince mixture, but served them as a side too.

I literally did consider strongly ending our relationship at that point.

To this day, he maintains it's a normal thing to have in/with lasagne?!

AIBU?

As a side note, I always serve it with mixed salad and either garlic bread or if I'm being proper porky, chips too!

Lasagne with chips is great. Curry with chips is great. Chips are great.

Lasagne with peas in - hell to the no.
Lasagne served with peas - yes please.

I stopped ordering lasagne in Portugal after receiving the dish with ham many times. Utterly disgusting! Why would anyone put ham in a lasagne?

Ask the people in Puglia where it's quite normal.

cushioncovers · 08/05/2022 19:02

I've had lasagna with a side of peas and chips with lashings of salad cream . Twas nice actually

Yarnasaurus · 08/05/2022 19:02

Peas in lasagne is authentic for Sicilians

Highlighting for those who are going on about authenticity.

No peas do not go in lasagne. On the side maybe if I am trying to eat more vegi's I have sprouts/ cauliflower/ peas with half my meals tho.

As has been said, both on this thread and the other lasagne thread today, unless you are from one of the several regions of Italy where its traditional to use peas (and hard boiled eggs) in lasagne.

I wonder what the reaction would be if Italians started to say cod couldn't possibly be served with chips or shepherd's pie didn't have mash on top.

Eeksteek · 08/05/2022 19:04

Not in traditional Italian tomato/basil lasagne, no. But I make various versions, one of which has peas in (it’s a veggie one. Leeks, courgette, peas, sugars snaps, spinach and feta)

Wetblanket78 · 08/05/2022 19:05

Well you put carrots in so maybe he put peas in to substitute carrots. I've put it on the side before. I had made it the month before and froze the rest and had no salad stuff in.

LakieLady · 08/05/2022 18:11

Quite!

I'm intrigued as to what people put in their ragu if they don't use celery, onion and carrot.

You can put whatever veg need's using in it. Celery gives it a bit of texture.

donquixotedelamancha · 08/05/2022 18:03

Celery! Who the hell thinks celery in a lasagne is a good idea!

The Italians.

It goes in the ragu. Acceptable, even expected. Not peas.

Rrrunrunrunrunrun · 08/05/2022 19:08

My DM once put a layer of grated carrot.

WindyKnickers · 08/05/2022 19:11

Ex MIL once made "spaghetti lasagne". She'd run out of lasagne sheets so made a sort of pasta bake (fine) but called it spaghetti lasagne (weird).

DuesToTheDirt · 08/05/2022 19:13

"Nobody in Italy would ever serve Lasagna al forno with chips, she insists."

Peas, chips, carrot - have whatever the hell you like in and with your lasagne. Just because it's an Italian dish doesn't mean you have to make it and serve it as the Italians do. They're not eating it, you are, so it's none of their business!

Kanaloa · 08/05/2022 19:16

I wouldn’t mind them on the side. I love peas, we eat them with anything. But then we don’t really keep to arbitrary rules about you must have abc with xyz. The way I see it if there’s vegetables you like, eat them with anything! I love those big frozen bags of mixed veg, we probably have them as one of our sides most days, no matter what meal we’re having. We are vegetarians as well though so used to unexpected vegetables in dishes. I had a delicious aubergine lasagne last time we went out to eat.

Kanaloa · 08/05/2022 19:17

I wouldn’t worry too much about authenticity either. You’re eating a lasagne to fill your belly, not pass an A-Level in Italian cultural studies.

Cap89 · 08/05/2022 19:20

I knew someone at university who had rice as a side for lasagne… she couldn’t have it without. So wrong.

Workinghardeveryday · 08/05/2022 19:20

My stepmum years ago made me lasagna and it had sliced carrots in it, like sliced and laid out like a sheet of pasta.

would have been lovely but the texture was all wrong 🙁

Onionbhajisandwich · 08/05/2022 19:28

I serve lasagne with peas and sweetcorn and sometimes a salad. I never cook it with peas in though.

DD and I have never got over being served steak and ale pie with rice and sweetcorn at her friends house when she was 5, she's just turned 23 Grin

WonderingWanda · 08/05/2022 19:41

I really like Lasagne with a side of peas. I would never have it with mash though, too sloppy.

My DH once made a lasagne with no tomato based sauce. It was dry mince, lasagne sheets and white sauce layered and topped with cheese. It was an interesting meal... maybe peas would have moistened that one!

AND FOR THOSE AT THE BACK

LASAGNE IN SICILY AND OTHER ITALIAN REGIONS HAS PEAS IN IT.

Known as a lasagne in bianco. Without tomato based sauce. Like a pizza bianca.

Both normal variations in Italy.

5zeds · 08/05/2022 19:47

Sounds yummy to me though I’d prefer next to rather than in. Bread and pasta or potato and pasta sounds very beige.

Toddlerteaplease · 08/05/2022 19:48

Why wouldn't you have peas on the side with lasagne. My sister thinks I'm word as I have pizza with peas. Hmm
