To think Labour are hypocrites

Beergate. Turns out the event was planned. To think of all the slating Starmer gave Johnson. 🤔 This site's favourite newspaper, the Dailymail, has released a leaked memo, which might mark Starmer's downfall. If Johnson could survive, can Starmer?

OP posts:

And the "significant new info" - the memo

Memo? I'm referring to allegations of drunken behaviour from junior members of the party who were not working, invitations to a pre-planned dinner event, the female MP who was abusive in the House of Commons apparently turning up just to socialise and eat.....all requiring thorough investigation.

I’m not up to date which party is this applying to?

Luculentus · 09/05/2022 17:58

Starmer has been found guilty of nothing....yet. as for this barrister, all I have read is conjecture and his own conclusion as to the differences between the proven and alleged contravention of lockdown laws. There is no legal reasoning I can see. Just a puff of air around how he has interrupted work related gatherings.

Adam Wagner has given us chapter and verse of the the legal and factual basis for what he has said. You on the other hand, haven't, OP. If you would care to remedy that now and explain precisely how he is wrong, backing your opinion up with the relevant legal authorities, I'm sure we would all be fascinated to read what you have to say.

Slinkymalinky03 · 09/05/2022 18:01

@MarshaBradyo Labour.

I'll include Labour too, but they're not in power right now.

I wouldn't believe any of them would put the population before their careers, not one of them.
Not even Kier or Raynor. In fact, how often have labour MPs said negative things about women, 52% of the population?
Why?
To try and mitigate wrath of ideologues that went often JKR and others.

If they can't tell the truth about biology, they can't tell the truth about anything, that makes them untrust worthy and without morals and it shows they'll put their careers before 52% of the population every time.

It looks like Starmer and Rayner have just proved you wrong.

Excuses will come from Labour supporters why this police investigation should be viewed differently, it’s not based on anything

Starmer is hypocritical for asking others to resign due to an investigation

So whilst he should stay he’s not without the ability to do politics and say whatever at the time and not mean it

There are major differences between the two investigations. In Starmer's case, Durham police have already investigated and concluded there was no crime, and nothing that the Mail has put forward, despite their most desperate efforts, demonstrates any breach of the law in force at the relevant time.

By contrast, at the time that the police were investigating Johnson's activities, he had already admitted being present at the garden party and the birthday party, he just came up with the incredibly feeble excuse that he thought they were within the rules. Even though his party promulgated those rules and you would have to be an utter idiot to think it was OK to have a birthday work gathering at which your wife, interior designer and photographer were present. There was and is no "I did it but I'm too stupid to understand the rules" defence. We all knew it was a matter of time before Johnson received a FPN.

In the meantime, everyone is ignoring:
their dire election results last week,
the radioactive fish and chlorinated chicken that are about to be foisted on us,
food shortages,
cost of living increases,
the breakdown of the Union,
Sein Fein's historic win last week,
Boris Johnson's own partygate record...
etc. etc. etc.

And we're all falling for it 🙄

I've been trying to get some of that Chlorinated Chicken ever since we were promised it.

It looks like Starmer and Rayner have just proved you wrong.

MPs are all the same.
Politicians are all the same.

No one gets into politics without thinking of personal gains.

I stand by that.

Starmer made 115k as an advisor during his time as an MP.
Raynor charged personalised airpods to her expenses last year as I recall. Almost £300

They all feather their own first.

Tanith · 09/05/2022 18:20

...
the current childcare crisis,
the childcare ratios proposals,
the energy bills,
the take over of the electoral commission,
the police bill
...

If only the media put half as much energy into reporting these things!

MarshaBradyo · 09/05/2022 18:22

There are major differences between the two investigations. In Starmer's case, Durham police have already investigated and concluded there was no crime

but they re-opened on new evidence, which was their decision

And Johnson had already admitted to all the ingredients of the relevant offence at the point when Starmer said he should be resigning. Because he had no choice, not least due to the contents of the redacted Gray report.

Zilla1 · 09/05/2022 18:30

@Tanith to be fair, the Daily Mail clearly has to prioritise what it reports to ensure all the Royal Stories aren't pushed off the front page with all the Labour scallywags.

I agree Tanith

as much as I think breaking of lock down rules for this in charge needed to be looked into the press have had an absolute field day with this. It’s shows the amount of control they have too. I want politicians to get on with their jobs not spend their time in meetings with journalist or their press teams

there is so much back stabbing at the moment and this is encouraged by the media feeling into it it doesn’t do us the public any good

We’ve had partygate for months pushing all else off

some seemed to relish it but I found it tiresome

FangsForTheMemory · 09/05/2022 18:34

So you’re shilling for Johnson, OP? Why not say so to start with?

Who’s the hypocrite now, eh?

Trafficblight · 09/05/2022 18:36

Not a fan of kier but fuck me are people really saying he's at bad as Boris? The shit show they made of covid, lockdown, now the economy (yes its a global issue but we have the highest rise in taxes and spiralling utility bills whilst they do fuck all about it). It's weird how this came about didn't it around the time it was declared in court that the tories policy of sending people back to care homes from hospitals was unlawful. I know what I find more deplorable, and it isn't people eating a curry.

You did make me question whether I had misheard it so googled

25 January – After the Metropolitan Police announced an investigation into the Downing Street parties, Starmer claimed that it was grounds for the Prime Minister's removal for office. He suggested that the mere announcement of the Met probe alone – even though it had not yet found any wrongdoing – was enough for members of the Cabinet to demand Johnson's departure:

‘We need to see the report in full and frankly, some of his Cabinet now need to look themselves in the mirror and ask themselves why they’re still supporting this Prime Minister. There’s a Metropolitan Police investigation into the goings on in Downing Street. It’s time that some of those Cabinet members spoke out and said we’re not tolerating this any longer.’

The same day, Angela Rayner tweets 'Boris Johnson's Downing Street is under police investigation, how on earth can he think he can stay on as Prime Minister?'

31 January – Sir Keir Starmer argues that being under investigation alone is grounds for Boris Johnson's resignation. He tweets: 'Honesty and decency matter. After months of denials the Prime Minister is now under criminal investigations for breaking his own lockdown laws. He needs to do the decent thing and resign.'

—the idea that a police investigation should prompt resignation is from him and also Rayner

Wasn’t the police probe into Johnson after he’d already been proven to be a liar and partygoer, though, courtesy of the Sue Gray report? I got the impression the police were just being used as an excuse not to publish the civil servant’s report in full, tbh.

Yes. By late January we knew they He had already mislead Parliament and refused to correct the record by this stage. We knew there were 18 parties, Johnson had attended 6 and hosted 1 at home.

It looks like Beth Rigby had same thought re police and resignation

maybe his answer will explain (can’t view now)

Johnson prolonged it by not resigning, even after being fined. People tend to care when the PM breaks the law and then lies about it to Parliament.

Ratrick · 09/05/2022 19:08

I know politics and the media has always been extremely partisan but fuck me have the right become the most dishonest, disingenuous bunch of bad-faith bellends going.

I'm not drawing any comparisons with Boris Johnson. I want to see a thorough investigation of the Durham event, based on the current evidence.

to what are you referring exactly?

Starmer has used partygate to own advantage for months and now is being investigated by police - which would end up in the news

I don’t see why it wouldn’t
