To use the wrong word

DM has always said "air licked" instead or air brushed for photos. DF says "Mourinio wool and Mourino glass"

Using "c" instead of "tt" such as licle not little absolutely drives me mad.

What word faux pas are you or others around you guilty of?

AIBU to think its not that hard to use the correct word for things?

Lickle Bockle makes my eyelid twitch.

A very very clever surgeon wrote to me about them staunching my wound (long story) and I had to grit my teeth to not red-pen it 😬

Antarcticant · 06/05/2022 00:04

None, knowingly. If I discover I have been pronouncing something incorrectly, I correct it at once.

However, I wouldn't judge someone for pronouncing something incorrectly - we all have to learn sometime, no one is born knowing how to pronounce words.

Yazo · 06/05/2022 00:07

The only thing that winds me up as 'should of' instead of should've although far worse when written. Otherwise don't really care too much.

staunching my wound

What is wrong with 'staunching a wound'? I thought it meant stopping the flow of blood from a wound. Not something I ever have cause to talk about, but it would be useful to know what the correct terminology is, just in case I need it in the future.

FlibbertyGiblets · 06/05/2022 00:09

You stanch a wound, Anty. Obvs v grateful my wound was staunched (twitch) because hey, I am here to grumble about the letter!

According to my dictionary, 'staunch' is the correct spelling. Is this perhaps a regional thing? Are you in the UK?

I hadn't even heard this word before.

Colleague use to pronounce silent letters. Knee and limB are my favourites 😂

MrPoppysParka · 06/05/2022 00:37

Stanch is an alternative spelling. Staunch is correct. Awkward…

FlibbertyGiblets · 06/05/2022 00:41

Oh dear, I forgot to say light hearted, now you are all glowering sullenly.

pizzaand · 06/05/2022 01:05

Staunch is correct in the UK isn't it? Stanch seems to be an American usage

user1471457751 · 06/05/2022 01:18

@FlibbertyGiblets or just accept you got it wrong 😂

IrishMama2015 · 06/05/2022 01:18

It seems like on British tv people keep using the word generally instead of genuinely and it drives me mad

FatOaf · 06/05/2022 05:36

In yet another meeting yesterday where someone referred to "appraising" someone of something rather than apprising them. This is a person who is very fussy about words, which makes his errors even more embarrassing.

BelleTheBananas · 06/05/2022 05:41

@IrishMama2015

Most people say a mash-up of the two: genuarlly. It’ll probably become a word eventually.

ButtockUp · 06/05/2022 05:52

Many people say 'mischievious' instead of 'mischievous.'

Drives me bats.

I am guilty of this. To me, mischievous just doesn’t sound right as a word. Blush

I do this too because I don't like the sound of mischievous Blush

TeaBug · 06/05/2022 06:07

Staunch sounds right to me. I've seen it written dozens of times. Can't all be wrong. Never seen stanch.

StoriedSally · 06/05/2022 06:07

@FlibbertyGiblets doctor here, staunching wounds is correct.

Bogeyes · 06/05/2022 06:25

LetHimHaveIt · 06/05/2022 06:28

I would, like FlibbertyGiblets, be more inclined to use 'staunch' in a 'Grey Gardens' sense, and 'stanch' to describe the arresting of blood flow/loss. But it's not incorrect.

Nothing wrong with staunch, it's a variation of stanch. And used in english healthcare, so put your red pen away!
