To use the wrong word

DM has always said "air licked" instead or air brushed for photos. DF says "Mourinio wool and Mourino glass"

Using "c" instead of "tt" such as licle not little absolutely drives me mad.

What word faux pas are you or others around you guilty of?

AIBU to think its not that hard to use the correct word for things?

"This game is so addicting."

Drives me round the bend.

I have to admit I have a big issue with people misusing words, simply because I respect language and know that education is really the best way to get ahead in life.

For example,

"I LITERALLY exploded into a ball of flames"... did you? DID YOU!? No you didn't.
Supposably versus supposedly - I've actually heard that used in a non-ironic way.
"Mediocre" when meaning "moderate". ARGH!

I despair at the education of the public in general.

The original meaning of mediocre is moderate.
Maybe the person using it is one of the people on this thread who refuses to accept language changes. Wink

The letter is pronnounced haitch.
Some people say aitch.
You say po-tay-to I say po-ta-to

The letter is spelt "aitch" in the oxford English dictionary, so it's not just a question of regional variations in English pronunciation, it's that in some areas people (including my husband!) are adding a letter at the front that doesn't exist. He does it because he thinks it's illogical for a letter not to be included in its own spelling.

It's a bit more complex than that. (And there's confusion here between spelling of the word, and pronunciation of the word)
Here's an interesting article about haitch.

theconversation.com/haitch-or-aitch-how-a-humble-letter-was-held-hostage-by-historical-haughtiness-97184

(Haitch is in the OED btw, as a non standard variation, whilst in more modern corpus linguistics studies, it's recorded as an acceptable variant of aitch- as David Crystal says, 'if it is used, it is correct" and I'm not going to argue with our greatest living linguist! )

I still wince every time Kate Fleming says it 🤨

So how does he cope with W?

And if he accepts M on the basis that the M sounds comes at the end of its name, how come the H at the end of aitch isn't acceptable?

If it's here on MN, it's an in-joke.
Elsewhere, I presume it's just a mistake!

@LinzyB

Is it the Dis-gust-ang meme? 😎
