To use the wrong word

DM has always said "air licked" instead or air brushed for photos. DF says "Mourinio wool and Mourino glass"

Using "c" instead of "tt" such as licle not little absolutely drives me mad.

What word faux pas are you or others around you guilty of?

AIBU to think its not that hard to use the correct word for things?

I hadn't even heard this word before.

Colleague use to pronounce silent letters. Knee and limB are my favourites 😂

Do you mean used?

HailAdrian · 06/05/2022 08:59

'His' instead of 'he's,' wtf?

"He turned round and said, she turned round and said, they sat there and said, he ain't got none."
Apparently, they can't have a conversation standing still and without a double negative.
"literally" in literally every sentence. Also the generally/genuinely thing.

😆

Isn't it "Merino" wool?

Daenerys77 · 06/05/2022 09:07

'Flaunt' and 'flout are used interchangeably these days, although they have very different, almost opposite meanings. And don't get me started on people who, when spelling out a word, pronounce the letter 'h' as 'haitch'.

Margotshypotheticaldog · 06/05/2022 09:11

The pp with her Mum's gwac a mohl has reminded me of my Dad's fondness for
par-MEEJ-an cheese. We never corrected him and now we all pronounce it this way ( with a good natured chuckle). He's elderly and noone wanted to embarass him so we just reshaped the universe to fit around him.

Thejoyfulstar · 06/05/2022 09:14

Sectember

Margotshypotheticaldog · 06/05/2022 09:14

@Daenerys77 in the North of Ireland that's how you can tell the protestants from the catholics. Well, one the ways anyway 😅 See: Derry Girls re where do you keep your toaster

amicissimma · 06/05/2022 09:16

ect and noone

How do people pronounce these words? There's a 50/50 chance of getting the c and the t the right way round in etc, and it improves if you think of et cetera, or et c, &c. And what does noone even mean? Do they mean 'midday' mispelled, or 'no one' but can't manage the space bar?

'Disinterested' when they mean uninterested.

OTOH, I'm intrigued by 'flammable' and 'inflammable'. Both correct and logical, and, in practice are taken to mean the same, although strictly speaking something that is flammable requires ignition, whereas something inflammable doesn't.

Margotshypotheticaldog · 06/05/2022 09:20

@amicissimma I can't speak on behalf of all of my people, but It was not managing the space bar in mycase 😉

TrashyPanda · 06/05/2022 09:23

English was not my fathers first language, so occasionally he made some mistakes.

my favourite was “bendy” instead of “bandy”. So he’d say someone had bendy legs.

EarringsandLipstick · 06/05/2022 09:25

staunch made me laugh, as did the lame backtrack of “lighthearted”

Yes, me too. Poor Flibberty!

Bogeyes · 06/05/2022 06:25

Burglarized.....it's burgled!

😂

This one really annoys me too.... why make it longer? 🤷‍♀️

I don’t like the phrase “talk to” rather than “talk about”. So for example - x could you talk to the issue for us? It feels very American.

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 06/05/2022 09:31

Well yes - that’s kind of the point…

LMB0716 · 06/05/2022 09:32

I have a 6 month old and when I was choosing a pram I was also put off by that brand name. I also saw one I liked that looked like the Egg but cheaper. The brand name was Hot Mom, and was written on the chassis. Erm, no.

IcakethereforeIam · 06/05/2022 09:55

I wind up my kids by asking them if they've got their 'phones on 'throb'!

Peoniesandpeaches · 06/05/2022 09:57

I detest people confusing “what” and “that” as in “He said what I was clever.” It’s possibly a regional thing to have people use the 2 interchangeably but it drives me crazy.
Also even though technically it is allowed I have people referring to something as being “addicting” rather than addictive. It seems to have come from Asian cultures but been adopted by people who think it sounds more cutesy because I hear it mostly in reference to food or other things - “oh my gosh BTS are so addicting.”

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 06/05/2022 09:58

MrPoppysParka · 06/05/2022 00:37

Stanch is an alternative spelling. Staunch is correct. Awkward…

I thought that was correct too.

What?!! Are you sure it's not talk THROUGH the issue? Sounds all kinds of wrong.

TheChurchOfEli · 06/05/2022 10:00

Brought instead of bought.

“I brought a new top” .. where, where did you bring it to? Drives me absolutely fucking nuts. It’s become so commonplace now though it’s almost like it’s turning into a new word. (I see teachers using this too so we’ve got no hope really).

Feckingfeck · 06/05/2022 10:01

@Mamette

SHNUGGLE??

What is this monstrosity? 😮

No 'talk to' is the phrase & in common usage in my line of work.

I'll defend this one - 'talk about' is to discuss something, without having a particular purpose or agenda. 'Talk to' we would use a lot in meetings - the person is required to 'talk to' or 'speak' to a particular agenda item, with a view to bring certain decisions to the table for action.

It's more purposeful.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 06/05/2022 10:02

Is it only me who really liked ‘air licked’ for airbrushed?

To be fair, I say t’interweb because it really winds up my dc.

FatOaf · 06/05/2022 10:02

people keep saying 'infamous' to mean 'very famous'

People keep saing "enormity" to mean "magnitude". Enormity means something entirely different.

I'm also sick of "decayed" for "decade" and "temporally" for "temporarily", both of which are nearly universal among BBC newsreaders/presenters. Temporally and temporarily mean different things.
