Odd door behaviour. AIBU to be a bit frightened?

Firstly I am absolutely not suggesting anything woo is going on. I am very very not woo-minded.
A couple of nights ago I went upstairs to check on dd7, who had gone to sleep in our bed. As I passed her bedroom door I heard a thud from inside. The door was closed tight and I thought the cat might be closed in there. But I had my hands full so went on into our room to drop off the clothes I was carrying. Dd was fast asleep and the cat was snoring peacefully next to her. I went back onto the landing intending to go into her room to investigate and found her bedroom door wide open and the light on. I went in and saw nothing out of the ordinary but was a bit freaked out. Decided something must’ve fallen off her bed for some reason although the room was completely still, no open window or anything. DH was downstairs.
Last night something woke DH at 3am. He got up for a wee, passing dd’s closed bedroom door on his way to the toilet. When he came out of the bathroom, dd’s door was wide open. He spent the rest of the night in her bed as he felt unsettled by it.
Cat was asleep on our bedroom floor.

So what is going into?
it’s not a draughty house though it is old. No other pets and cat is old and doesn’t bring home critters any more.

Have you got a loft?

Furrbabymama87 · 05/05/2022 21:00

A mouse or rat. A while ago, every night once kids were in bed and I was sitting watching telly I'd hear a weird noise from other end of the room, couldn't find anything. A few days later a hole appeared and a furry face peeked out.

iheartmybeachhut · 05/05/2022 21:01

Our lounge door frequently swings open on its own but we think it's the wood settling in the frame, although we do have a resident presence of previous elderly occupant who makes herself known from time to time, moving things, unususal fragrances etc, particularly active when we started decorating.

girlmom21 · 05/05/2022 21:02

Is the door hung at a slight angle or slightly off balance?

JudyGemstone · 05/05/2022 21:02

I’m saying woo.

Cap89 · 05/05/2022 21:05

I’m normally able to explain this sort of stuff away, but sorry that’s seriously creepy op 😬

Salutatorydrinks · 05/05/2022 21:06

The light on bit is very odd.

Your door obviously doesn't shut tight. This would go away with a new door. I suppose the litmus test would be to lock it or otherwise secure it and see what happens.

My door gives a knock at around 1am every night. We know it's something to do with the house - heating, pipes etc.

Salutatorydrinks · 05/05/2022 21:07

It's not seriously creepy at all!!

piratehugs · 05/05/2022 21:07

I was going to ask about a loft too. Could someone be hiding/living in your loft? Or if a terrace, a neighbour coming through a shared loft space? Very unsettling.

romdowa · 05/05/2022 21:08

I'd be freaked out too. The other night I was awake with the baby and heard the sound of my dog walking in the hallway. His nails make a very distinct sound on the lino. Partner went to check and said dog was in the living room fast asleep. I didn't sleep for the night 😨

This needs its own thread!!

Otherwise OP it’s just the warmer weather of the day then cooling down quickly at night

GrumpyLovegood · 05/05/2022 21:12

The door could be wonky as it is an old house, but we’ve lived here for 6 years and it’s never done this before.
I did think mouse/rat and this morning we put a humane trap in the room. But the door was closed tight when I first passed it. It does close tight, you need to twist the handle to open it.
DH works from home and has heard nothing during the days.
Dd asked to sleep in our bed again tonight. This is unusual especially twice in one week, but she been tired and whingey all week so I thought she was just overtired.
I’ve been up to check on her twice already!

I mean, when I say unwanted squatter/creepy neighbour, I'm assuming you've ruled out the door being able to open by itself when the temperature changes or whatever.

GrumpyLovegood · 05/05/2022 21:15

We do have a loft but it has a tiny hatch inside a cupboard. It’s a semi (Victorian, we don’t share loft with neighbours).

Did you tell DH what happened to you before he experienced the same later that night?

WildFlowerBees · 05/05/2022 21:22

I love how people will suggest someone living in the loft before suggesting woo. I'm calling woo, tell them to bugger off.

GrumpyLovegood · 05/05/2022 21:28

@Smartish I did tell him. I told him as soon as I came downstairs as I was freaked out. But he is a sensible (boring) 53 yr old accountant, not at all given to drama.

Jurassicparkinajug · 05/05/2022 21:30

I've got nothing to add. But what the eck is woo??

I'd be creeped out too OP. Probably just the door opening by itself but still.

Smartish · 05/05/2022 21:31

@GrumpyLovegood Just wondering whether that out a suggestion into his head. Trying to be logical rather than assume anything else first!

IggysPop · 05/05/2022 21:33

Any chance she’s sleep walking?

Staffy1 · 05/05/2022 21:33

Ooh, you have to put a camera in there to see what’s going on. Could it be a brief sleepwalking episode by DD?

Paddingtonthebear · 05/05/2022 21:33

I’m not woo either but that is weird. I would want to put up a security camera

Staffy1 · 05/05/2022 21:34

Haha, cross post

SuperFlyWoman · 05/05/2022 21:34

Sounds like DD is unsettled by something.

We all know ghosts don’t exist so try to work it out logically.

When your DH got up to go to the loo, could she have got up to see who it was, opened the door, then fell asleep again?

Doesn’t explain how her door opened and light switched on if your had your eyes on her the whole time while you were in your room with her though. A rat wouldn’t be able to switch a light on or open a door!

Does anyone have keys to your house? Cleaner, neighbour? Is it big enough and solid enough that you wouldn’t hear someone getting around it? No one could creep upstairs or hide in our tiny house. Every stair creaks so loudly, they’d give up after the first few!

SuperFlyWoman · 05/05/2022 21:36

Camera a great idea. Could be an iPad or phone etc. Just make sure whoever it is doesn’t see you setting it up!
