Odd door behaviour. AIBU to be a bit frightened?

Firstly I am absolutely not suggesting anything woo is going on. I am very very not woo-minded.
A couple of nights ago I went upstairs to check on dd7, who had gone to sleep in our bed. As I passed her bedroom door I heard a thud from inside. The door was closed tight and I thought the cat might be closed in there. But I had my hands full so went on into our room to drop off the clothes I was carrying. Dd was fast asleep and the cat was snoring peacefully next to her. I went back onto the landing intending to go into her room to investigate and found her bedroom door wide open and the light on. I went in and saw nothing out of the ordinary but was a bit freaked out. Decided something must’ve fallen off her bed for some reason although the room was completely still, no open window or anything. DH was downstairs.
Last night something woke DH at 3am. He got up for a wee, passing dd’s closed bedroom door on his way to the toilet. When he came out of the bathroom, dd’s door was wide open. He spent the rest of the night in her bed as he felt unsettled by it.
Cat was asleep on our bedroom floor.

So what is going into?
it’s not a draughty house though it is old. No other pets and cat is old and doesn’t bring home critters any more.

Shut the door! Lol

It was a remarkable image @MushMonster , although not for the faint-hearted.

@SuperFlyWoman

We all know ghosts don’t exist so try to work it out logically

How do we all know this? By what means?

How do 'we' know otherwise? By what means?

So glad I read this thread just before bed. I turned off the living room light and opened the door to go up to bed, expecting the hall and landing lights to be on only to find myself in utter darkness 😮

Had to NC to tell my not really woo story as I've told it IRL, but this thread reminded me of it. I'm a light sleeper and have always woken at DS making the slightest movement at night - literally just a toe out of his bed. One night a few years ago I must have been in deep, deep sleep. I heard a creak right outside my ajar bedroom door. In that millisecond of half conscious confusion my mind decided it was some kind of woo or an intruder and as the door started to open I kind of shouted 'No' and jumped out of bed and tried to close the door. Scared DS - who of course it was - and me shitless 😂

You say you have lived there 6 years and its never happened, then go on to talk about a new extension downstairs. Maybe the house is settling and that's made the wall and door frame slightly out of kilter. Not enough to be noticeable but enough to unclick the door?

Mamanyt · 06/05/2022 01:30

First, check to make sure that there is no short in the wiring of the lamp, then in the wiring going TO the lamp. That's the most worrying thing, if there is no "woo." A lamp should not randomly turn on if the wiring is sound and there is no "woo." And it is probably the easiest thing to make sure of. LOL, if that checks out, and the cat is not the culprit, let me know and we can discuss "woo." I live with it on a daily basis.

newusernamelouise · 06/05/2022 01:30

Our house often creaks and settles. If one door opens sometimes that draft will make another pop open, so when your other bedroom door opened or closed or the bathroom door it can sometimes make another door that isn't latched tightly pop open if that makes sense. Doesn't explain the light but like others said maybe it was already on.

LongLiveThyKing · 06/05/2022 02:06

I’d cleanse with sage OP! Buy a smudge stick and go around the walls, windows and corners of the house whilst chanting “Asking any spirits present to please leave our home so that we may live in peace” or something similar. Be firm but kind in whatever you say.

When I moved into my previous home with my daughter -who was three at the time- there was very strange activity. It was an old Victorian mill house and immediately and suddenly my daughter started drawing ‘the ghost’ repeatedly and pointing past me laughing throughout the day but there was nothing that I could see. The drawing was a blob with eyes and grimace which she’d never drawn before but suddenly it’s all she would draw. It got a bit freaky as she would just do so many of the pictures and refused to draw anything else!

Two moments I recall are one night I was putting her to bed, reading her a story when suddenly a bright flash of light zoomed past me so strange that I said aloud “what the hell” and then the light disappeared. Where it had stopped she pointed up and laughed and said “funny face”. Again I could see no one. Another night she was sleeping in my room, I got a bit worried about leaving her alone, and she pointed to the end of the bed and said “pirate”. I asked her if the ghost was a man and she said yes he was a man with a beard like her dad. I don’t know why but I wasn’t scared, I didn’t feel like they had bad intentions it was like a feeling of warmth. Either way I cleansed the home with sage not long after and my daughter stopped drawing the ghost and saying he was there so I believe it worked.

Our house was happy for a few years until it all changed one day. Things have often happened in daylight here. We got a priest in the end. It took quite a bit of prayer and it ('the old man') was angered at the mention of God. That was 6 years ago and the house continues to be peaceful.
I'd absolutely rule out all logical explanations first (it could be anything like DD sleepwalking) then consider speaking to a priest.

Summersuniscoming · 06/05/2022 06:38

@LongLiveThyKing my daughter was 3 when our experience happened too. Although she had referred to the 'man' for a while. I was told it was me generating the poltergeist energy from fear. I ran with dd from the house that day and drove away.
The time that did scare me though was when DH asked why dd was running around upstairs when I'd put her to bed. She was still in bed. DH looked uncomfortable and because he doesn't believe in such 'nonsense', his face told me something needed to be done.

StridTheKiller · 06/05/2022 06:39

When I'm very stressed I experience hallucinations, mostly seeing people and animals that aren't there (or disappear when I look at them). I also hear my DD's voice and occasionally other people I care about's voices. I presume this is the stress manifesting (mental health services are shite round here, so persuing this is a waste of time).
Have you a carbon monoxide alarm?

AntsAntsAntsAnts · 06/05/2022 06:53

I’ve just spent a week in a holiday cottage where every night at 9.42pm something has thundered along the landing. It sounded so much like a child getting out of bed and running (bug thud followed by regular thud thud thud) that the first couple of nights we just assumed it was one of ours and DH went up to check. Both were fast asleep so no idea what that was, but we braced ourselves for it each night and raised an eyebrow at one another.

The cottage itself actually had a lovely calm and homely feel, so no idea what that was.

Hot water tank/pipes probably.

SurpriseSurprise · 06/05/2022 08:58

Are you able to Google and see if your DD birth Dad is still in prison? Hopefully that will put your mind at ease and know it’s not him

I’m sure it’s nothing like that though

BrioNotBiro · 06/05/2022 09:13

I was expecting a 'Someone rang the front doorbell at 6 pm. I didn't answer and I am terrified by this aberrant behaviour". Then loads of people piling on to say ring 101 Grin

alfagirl73 · 06/05/2022 09:21

Okay here's what you do.
Check every inch of the house - cupboards, loft, the lot.
That satisfies yourself that there is no-one "hiding".
Monitor developments - make sure you check the room before you go to bed - door open/closed, DD asleep etc... and make a note.
If "weird" things keep happening you have two options:
1 - do nothing.
If nothing feels "bad" and nothing bad is actually happening, then you might not want to know more.
2 - set up a camera - or maybe 2 (one in the room, one on the landing) - and let it run for a few nights and see what it shows. What it shows should tell you enough that you can determine if it's just the house, an olympic mouse opening doors and turning on lights, anyone sleepwalking - or whether it's something of a "woo" nature - in which case it's up to you how you deal with it.
Again - depends if it feels bad or not.
I strongly suspect there is weirdness in my house (have witnessed a few things) but it doesn't feel bad so I'm just kind of leaving it alone - not sure I want to know more at this point.

HoobleDooble · 08/05/2022 22:43

I'd put my money on the extension causing a bit of a shift. I live in a Victorian terrace in what was a heavily mined area. Some days our doors click shut, then the next they won't stay closed for love nor money and we once closed the bedroom door before going away for the weekend and had to break it open when we got back. I totally expect to wake up one morning and find myself down the bottom of a mine shaft!

A mouse or rat. A while ago, every night once kids were in bed and I was sitting watching telly I'd hear a weird noise from other end of the room, couldn't find anything. A few days later a hole appeared and a furry face peeked out.

I'd think some sort of rodent ..there was a thread like this last year, and the ''Ghost'' was next door's rabbit.

Usually these things have a logical explanation.
{Nervously hopes so as 01:34 in UK.}, and I don't want a hairy hand creeping around my bedroom door..

A woman I know once had someone come out of her loft.

Turns out he was living there for nearly a year.

She only caught him leaving as she slept in one day and found him climbing out to use her toilet.

When we lived in England in an old Suffolk house, every single morning every single kitchen cupboard and door would be open, all sides of the kitchen. Every single day I accused everyone else of trying to make me lose my mind. I was also impressed at whoever it was and their level of commitment of doing this daily.

One time after about 2 years living there with the daily drawer and cupboard opening, my husband took the children to Paris for a few days so I could get on with some work. When I woke up both mornings, all cupboards were open so I realised it wasn’t the family. It must have been because the kitchen was on a slope I thought, despite the doors and drawers not opening during the day. Checked with a spirit level and if anything the cupboards were angled slightly backwards meaning the doors were even less likely to open. Plus it was three walls of cupboards and drawers.
We had a motion sensor alarm so it wasn’t anyone coming in to the house. I was baffled but despite the annoyance of having to close a million doors and drawers daily, it wasn’t affecting our life in any other way.

Anyway we just got used to it and didn’t know exactly who or what was opening all these doors and drawers. One day though I caught my hip area on an open drawer when getting up to make a coffee and I shouted out “whoever or whatever is opening these doors will you just fuck off” in frustration. They never friggin’ opened on their own again.

*available for exorcisms by appointment only. ;-)

but jokes aside, I was always so close minded about the possibility of anything paranormal. Now I’m not so sure. When I look back of our time in that house, there were a few things that should have set alarm bells off. The children and dog picked up on a lot whereas I was always trying to be more pragmatic. Truth is, nobody truly really knows about certain aspects of life or the afterlife. Now days I’m a pure sucker for a woo story!

This. There's also really good cleansing videos on YouTube. I've also used Tibetan bells with cleansing incantations to get rid of negative energy.

It's a ghost, maybe even two. This has to be it, there is no chance of any other explanation. I'd move
