“Don’t put stuff in my bin”

Soubriquet · 05/05/2022 20:03

I know I’m going to be told I’m unreasonable but seriously, what is the issue with people putting stuff in your outdoor bin as they walk by?

I’m not talking about someone putting their entire garbage in your bin, but say a crisp packet or a poo bag.

Why is it such a problem? Your bin is not going to the special golden place. It goes to the same place as everything else.

Unclench. It’s a bin

As pps have said, the bin belongs to the homeowner - it's not a public bin. Try to think of it this way - would you post your rubbish through their letterbox or drop in through their open car window? No, of course you wouldn't (unless you're really a prize arse, in which case you shouldn't be out in public). Take you rubbish home with you or put it in the next public bin you see - it's really not that hard.

Did you parents honestly not teach you this basic thing? Hmm

WheekestLink · 06/05/2022 12:22

YABU. Hold onto it until you get to a public bin or even (revelation) your own.

Someone put a dog poo bag in my bin (they came into my open gate to use the bin), I followed them and left it on their drive. I then informed them I'd done it. It's so rude to put your dogs faeces on someone's property, regardless of where the bin is.

Horst · 06/05/2022 13:00

I don’t want anyone else rubbish in my bins. We are a large family with the extra large bins and we fill them ourselves also it would mean actually walking up my drive to my house to use my bin.

At my old house where the bins where closer to the street I did see someone do it, they crossed the road to use my bin rather than go in their own garden was weird. So I removed it and put it on their car roof.

ArtichokeAardvark · 06/05/2022 13:06

We used to live on a small street just off a main park that was understandably popular with dog walkers. I used to go mad as we'd end up with multiple poo bags a day going into our bins. Our street was too narrow for a regular bin lorry, so the binmen would lift out the bin bags (rather than tipping the entire bin into the back of a lorry). EVERY WEEK I was left with a collection of squishy, stinking poo bags and other park rubbish (takeaway cartons, endless coffee cups) to clear up as the bin men wouldn't take them.

Please please don't just dump your rubbish in someone's bin.

My bin my rules. No dog shit in my bin, it would get thrown straight back out 💩

But how are people expected to know your rules if they're ok with dog poo in their bins?

I like the sticker idea another poster suggested.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 06/05/2022 13:20

I don't know what house rules you have in your home - but that doesn't matter, because I don't just waltz into there.... because it's your house, not mine.

Same with bins.

angieloumc · 06/05/2022 13:21

Disgusting, take your own rubbish home and put it in your own bin.
I'd be raging if I saw someone put a poo bag in my bin. Though I might be a bit precious, I jet wash our general waste bin (and my elderly neighbours) once a fortnight after collection and the recycling once a month.

SirChenjins · 06/05/2022 13:22

They're not expected to know anything beyond 'it's not a public bin - find a public bin and put your rubbish in that'. No-one can be so obtuse as to need that spelled out to them, surely.

Bunty55 · 06/05/2022 13:28

I keep my bins behind a gate at the side of my house. On bin day I put them out on the pavement at the front. Provided someone does not put a massive load of stuff in compromising the bin from being emptied then I do not care as it is in the public domain.

But behind the gate ? You dare !

StrangerYears · 06/05/2022 13:34

I hate it as we have yellow lid recyclable bins and green lidded garden waste bins. People chuck dog shit bags in both (So I have to fish them out) or cans in the green bin.

They could use my bins if they used them properly, but why should I have to sort other people's rubbish out?

AnneElliott · 06/05/2022 13:38

I don't mind as long as they put it in the right bin! Our council is very strict and a non recyclable thing in the white bin means they don't take it!

knittingaddict · 06/05/2022 13:42

Yes I would have a problem with this. Around here the bin men lift the black sacks out of the bins rather than tipping them up. A random bag of dog poo would end up on the floor or left in the bin. No thanks.

Just for your information, I have been a dog owner. How difficult is it to take your dog poo or crisp packet home and dispose of it there? Answer - not difficult at all.

This is the whole issue distilled, isn’t it? Operating on the basis that something is fine if you personally don’t mind it.

You know from this thread that a large number of people really wouldn’t be happy. That ought to be enough. You don’t need each individual householder to label their bins.

I don’t mind the sound of lawnmowers very early in the morning or late at night, but I wouldn’t do it because I’m aware it’s a common bugbear. It’s not fair to put the onus on my neighbours to object when I know full well it’s likely to annoy some of them.

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 06/05/2022 13:58

Our bins are at our side door, so only out on the road when waiting to be emptied or having just been emptied. If it's not emptied yet I don't have a huge issue with you putting rubbish in. if it's just been emptied I HATE people putting poo bags in- it's going to sit at the bottom of my bin with a whole of of rubbish piled on top. of course the bag is going to split, and now there is dogshit smeared over the bottom of my bin. Cheers for that. And if I spot it before piling a load of rubbish on top it's not exactly easy for me to reach in and get it....and then where do I put it?

Use your own, or a public bin! your car lives outside- do you object to me smearing dogshit on the roof of your car?

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 06/05/2022 14:00

This is a bête noire of mine. Locally our bins are only collected every third week. Despite recycling everything I can my bin is pretty much full to capacity. Passers-by adding a bit here and a bit there uses up quite a lot of room.

Plus the council are very sniffy about what they take - if there are recyclables in the main bin they'll slap a sticker on it and decline to empty it, so if someone has put rubbish in my bin I have to pick through it to avoid a bin sanction.

It was a real problem when we had building work on the opposite street, to the point that after having had polite requests not to use my bin ignored, I started removing the builders' lunch rubbish and leaving it on the bonnet of their work vehicles, often while they watched. That worked.

2bazookas · 06/05/2022 14:20

If passers by put the wrong stuff in the wrong bin, the collection team may refuse to empty it, making a problem for the household it belongs to.

LakieLady · 06/05/2022 16:10

I keep my recycling bin by my back door, because it's more convenient than going out the front door and down the drive to the gate. (I don't have a hundred yard drive or anything, but I do have steep front steps).

If people regularly put their rubbish in my rubbish bin, I'd do the same with that. They will only take rubbish that's in bags in the general bin, so anything else would just lie in the bottom.

As I live in a naice area, people don't do that sort of thing here. 😉

PeacockPartyTime · 06/05/2022 16:38

You’re fine with it, I’m not.

catscatscatseverywhere · 06/05/2022 16:41

It's not public bin. It's for the use of my family, not some people passing by. Take your dog's shit home.

Wannabegreenfingers · 06/05/2022 16:44

I don't own a dog. I don't want dog poo in my bin full stop. I'm fully aware it stays outside, but my point is still valid.

Giraffesandbottoms · 06/05/2022 16:47

I would rather someone bag up dog shit and put it in my bin than leave it on the pavement.

I currently have a skip and lots of people dump stuff in there - it annoyed me in the beginning but I have to say I have stopped caring. Less rubbish on the street is a good thing, it’s a bin and it can be used as such. Our bin men can be funny about taking the bin if there is non black bag rubbish in there but surely they know people walking past use it?

DressingGownofDoom · 06/05/2022 16:50

This is the thing when you live on a popular walking route. Everyone thinks it's fine to use your bin or sit on your wall or walk down your drive to make a phone call. Why not just jump in the car and make a trip to Tesco while you're at it?

KirstenBlest · 06/05/2022 16:55

My bins are in the front garden. My green waste and recycling bin often have rubbish in them, which I have to pick out.

This week my bin was full of rubbish with no room for mine. I was not happy.

Lids are tied down now.

mrsfoof · 06/05/2022 20:28

I wouldn't mind a crisp packet but I wouldn't want my bin filled with canine excrement.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 06/05/2022 21:15

Sounds a bit extreme - or do they not have a bathroom? Grin
