“Don’t put stuff in my bin”

Soubriquet · 05/05/2022 20:03

I know I’m going to be told I’m unreasonable but seriously, what is the issue with people putting stuff in your outdoor bin as they walk by?

I’m not talking about someone putting their entire garbage in your bin, but say a crisp packet or a poo bag.

Why is it such a problem? Your bin is not going to the special golden place. It goes to the same place as everything else.

Unclench. It’s a bin

Call me petty (I know I am but I don't care) but I don't want anyone walking on my drive and putting their stuff in my bins even if it isn't shit. I think it is bloody rude and I would never even consider it. It's my bloody bin not a public bin. Fuck off!

While I may, very occasionally if there are no public bins nearby put my very small bit of rubbish in someone else's bin, I wouldn't enter their front garden to do so. I'd only do it if their bin was close enough to the pavement to reach over or was on the pavement waiting to be emptied. I don't make a habit of it, I just figure it's better than littering the streets. But I ought to know better than argue with MN, who see people like me as scum of the earth because the empty coke tin I've put in their recycling bin is somehow going to knock £££ of the price of their property.

Would you look at that? Spidey66 has put an empty Wotsits packet in my wheelie bin! This used to be a refined, middle class area! What will they think at my next candlelit supper?

Sofielou · 05/05/2022 22:46

Crisp packet, wouldn't be particularly bothered. But dog poo?! Disgusting. Why would you do that? I wouldn't dream of putting my baby's dirty nappy in someone else's bin. So keep your dog shit away from mine, thanks.

hedgehogger1 · 05/05/2022 22:52

Someone dumped a poo bag in my bin. It stank. I don't own a dog, but now for two weeks it appears I own one's shit

Teder · 05/05/2022 22:54

One crisp packet in my bin means they’ll refuse to empty it. It’s not that I care, as such, if someone uses my wheely bin but they won’t bloody empty it so yeah, I’d prefer people didn’t.

Some dog owners are lazy and selfish. Pick up after the pet you chose and dispose of their poo in a public poo bin or in your own home. I’m a dog owner, and if I’m a way from a bin, I just wait until I find one. Don’t like picking up and carrying poo? Don’t get a dog!

I agree with you OP. I don't get it. It's a bin that lives outside my house. I have no emotional attachment to its contents. If a crisp packet got stuck to the bottom, a crisp packet would live at the bottom for the rest of my life.

This is what I was thinking. Why would anyone fish a crisp packet out from the bottom of an outside bin? It obviously just lives there now, no big deal.

HansBanans · 05/05/2022 22:57

Our main household bin gets collected once every four weeks. If someone were to put a bag of dog poo in after it had been emptied (if we hadn't had a chance to put the bin back round the back of the house) it would stink to high heavens by the time it got collected again. It doesn't matter that the bin is outside, it's the stench every time over the following weeks when you lift the lid to put something in 🤢 and all the flies it attracts over that time too!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 05/05/2022 23:02

We get recycling and rubbish picked up once a week. No wheelie bins here. Still use black bags

The bags are put out the night before/early hours of the morning.

So are they going to the trouble of opening up a sealed bin bag, adding their own rubbish and then tying it up again? Even if they do, if anybody spots you doing that, they're going to suspect attempted identity theft or that you're throwing away something illegal and/or incriminating.

If they aren't bothering to properly add it to the bin bag and re-tie it, do you mean that they're chucking it in the general bin pile, so that falls between the bags and gets left there forever: basically just antisocially dropping litter in the streets, but trying to pretend that they aren't?

Wouldn't it be much simpler to just find a normal street bin for your crisp packet or just pop it in your pocket/bag and take it to put in your bin at home? And as for dog poo, anybody not using a proper dog poo bin or taking it home in a bag seriously needs to have a word with themselves.

Even using a normal general waste public bin is gross, as these usually don't have lids and that then means that everybody using it or passing by gets a disgusting whiff. Dog owners opening actual lidded dog poo bins to use them know what to expect - and can hold their noses accordingly.

Summerfun54321 · 05/05/2022 23:03

If you don’t want to dispose of dog shit properly, don’t own a dog. I would be livid if I saw someone throw shit into my bin.

emerald226 · 05/05/2022 23:08

Yeh same I see a bin as a bin

Indicatrice · 05/05/2022 23:09

I love dogs but can’t have one, why then should I have to deal with other people’s stinky dog shit bags in my bin?

Take your shit home with you.

Ponderingwindow · 05/05/2022 23:13

Dog poo smells. It belongs on the dog owners bin or a bin designated for that purpose. I don’t want it in my bin. We keep our bins by our side door, right off the kitchen.

our local regulations require all refuse to be bagged to reduce litter. If items are loose, when they tip the bins, the wind can blow things away.

LaBellina · 05/05/2022 23:17

There is a difference between an empty crisp bag and a stinky poo bag. Also if everyone just puts stuff in your bin, it’s going to be full at some point where you have no space for your own rubbish anymore. That’s why people are against it. Not everyone will be considerate when using others bin.

noblegreenk · 05/05/2022 23:18

I'd rather people put small items of rubbish in my bin rather than litter the road. I also don't mind if people put a bag of dog poo in it. I'd rather that than my child or I tread in it walking up the road. Think I may be a in a minority though!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 05/05/2022 23:26

Yeh same I see a bin as a bin

Are you also one of these people who will (either singlehandedly or as one of half the neighbourhood) rush and fill a skip that somebody has just had delivered and specifically paid for as they need it for the waste from their own job?

Or somebody who will freely drop litter in the streets ostensibly 'to keep the road sweepers in a job'?

VanillaIce1 · 05/05/2022 23:29

If I catch someone throwing their shit in my bin it gets lobbed up the road after them. I had a man try and dump a massive Wilkos bag full of rubbish in my bin the other day. Seriously annoys me.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 05/05/2022 23:31

But why does it have to be one or the other? Instead of a random third party having to decide which level of antisocial behaviour they can tolerate more, shouldn't it be incumbent on the antisocial person not to be antisocial in the first place?

Going on the same principle, would you prefer somebody to scream in your face or slap it hard instead? Or, just maybe, for them to respectfully raise their disagreement with you calmly - which, oddly enough, is still a very possible option for dealing with the situation.

FatOaf · 05/05/2022 23:35

Pretty well every time I put my garden/food waste bin out, someone will put some general rubbish in it either before or after it's been collected. If it's before, the composting stuff will have non-compostable rubbish in. If it's after, I have to tip it up and reach in to try to get the antisocial twat's rubbish out.

12yearsinazkaban · 05/05/2022 23:46

jytdtysrht · 05/05/2022 20:05

If you put a crisp packet in an empty bin, it may stick to the base and not come out when bin is next emptied. Then eventually the person will have to reach in and get it. Aggravating.

you should see the shit stuck to the bottom of mine
I hope the binmen don't Check...

I'd never reach in to get it out though, it's only a bin

PinkButtercups · 06/05/2022 00:01

Urgh the fact your area still use just black bin bags on the street is gross and must be full of rats.

And no, I don't want your shit in my bin. I'll come take a dump in your toilet and not flush.

PinkButtercups · 06/05/2022 00:02

Also I pay for my bin to get cleaned so I don't want poo in there! Also it's private property.

jytdtysrht · 06/05/2022 00:03

But mine lives in my garage so I keep it clean and only put well bagged rubbish in. So I don’t want loads of shit or litter stuck to the bottom and smelling. It makes the entire garage reek if the bin smells a bit.

Bubblesandsqueak1 · 06/05/2022 00:21

Let put it in simple term crisp packet ok open fucking chip bag with food was dumped into my bin on collection day after it had been emptied so for 2 weeks it sat rotting at the bottom of my bin ended up full of flies hundreds of the fucking ended up coming though my window same happened when some twat put dog poo in my bin, bag was split and I had poo all over the bottom of my bin guess which person had to clean it, my bins are stored on a tiny 1 metre patch outside the back no where else to put them,

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 06/05/2022 00:21

As shown just by the last two posts, people have different - all equally valid - ways of managing their bins and waste collections based on what they prefer and what works best for their household.

The rest of the thread is testimony to what we all know: that passers-by will invariably put things in the wrong bin and leave you with issues to sort out because of their laziness.

I think we need to get away from the whole 'oh, it's only a bin' narrative and focus on the fact that 'it's somebody else's property' - and respect that.
