To think that US states who want to ban abortion should be able to?

Abortion is such a fraught topic in the US. Would it really be so bad to just let the states who want to ban abortion do so, and leave it in the hands of the states themselves to decide? It seems that the Roe v Wade decision has caused a lot of tension in the context of the USA and the feeling that states should be independent and able to choose their own laws (e.g different laws on capital punishment).

Would it be a completely terrible thing for each state to decide on this, and then live with the consequences (as presumably many young people/liberals would relocate to different states where abortion is legal?). Maybe if they experience brain drain they will change their tune. People aren’t forced to live in a certain state.

Obviously I am completely aware this will have a huge negative impact on women in poverty as they have less options. So this is a key consideration and concern.

But I’m just really thinking out loud. I am very much pro-choice, but interested in views from people who understand US law and politics… could the overturning of Roe v Wade potentially be positive in that it settles the issues, states can decide, and everyone can talk about something else?

Or would it just mean that there is a gradual encroachment on women rights and then the pro-lifers start lobbying in pro-choice states and abortion rights are even further reduced. Another risk could be that abortion becomes a political issue every election in every state, and switches back and forth from being legal to illegal - causing massive headaches….

Interested to hear everyone’s thoughts!

Yes. Yes it would be awful and it would potentially lead to a lot of avoidable death and trauma. Not everyone is privileged enough to be able to move 🤦‍♀️ how can you be pro choice and agree with states banning abortion?!

CaptainMyCaptain · 04/05/2022 08:36

You can never ban abortion you can only ban safe, legal abortion.

SpiderVersed · 04/05/2022 08:36

It won’t prevent abortion. It will outlaw safe abortions.

Women and girls will die.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 04/05/2022 08:37

Your last paragraph is the only sensible aspect of your post.

How about the State does not have a say in women’s uteruses?

If you believe in any way in the overturning of Roe Vs. Wade, you are not pro-choice.

PutinIsAWarCriminal · 04/05/2022 08:39

Would it be a completely terrible thing for each state to decide on this, and then live with the consequences yes, because the state (middle aged men) don't live with the consequences, the women they are deciding for do.
(as presumably many young people/liberals would relocate to different states where abortion is legal?). Maybe if they experience brain drain they will change their tune. People aren’t forced to live in a certain state. that doesn't make sense, most people can't just pick up their lives and move to a different state.

loveisanopensore · 04/05/2022 08:39

No, it should be available in every state for everyone that needs it.

Imagine being a poor woman in Mississippi trying to get basic health care.

SubParbanMum · 04/05/2022 08:40

Moving costs money and people shouldn’t have to move states to have access to basic healthcare. It would adversely affect those on lower incomes. And we shouldn’t just be hoping brain drain will change their minds. We know it won’t and those who do manual jobs matter too!

OfstedOffred · 04/05/2022 08:41

Omg I said the DH last night, the potential overturning of Wade vs Roe literally sends shivers down my spine. It's like the fucking handmaids tale starting.

I cannot bloody believe this shit is happening in 2022.

My heart goes out to the women of the US.

CaptainMyCaptain · 04/05/2022 08:36

You can never ban abortion you can only ban safe, legal abortion.

This!!

All that will happen is it will go ‘underground’ and desperate women will be taken advantage of and put at risk.

Lime37 · 04/05/2022 08:42

CaptainMyCaptain · 04/05/2022 08:36

You can never ban abortion you can only ban safe, legal abortion.

100% this

Whatwouldscullydo · 04/05/2022 08:42

There's no need for the ability to ban it. Because anyone who doesn't want or agree with an abortion never has to have one if that's their choice.

We know what happens when women amd girls can't access abortion. They end up dead or damaged from some botched back ally procedure.

If the state really cared about babies then they'd not want to leave them motherless. Funny how the family at home is forgotten about In all this isn't it. I'm.sure all those babies will thrive with their mother in jail or dying of sepsis 🙄

stickygotstuck · 04/05/2022 08:42

Yes, it would be a huge disaster. So many women's lives destroyed, so many unwanted babies in the care system. Not to mention women imprisoned for daring to exercise their bodily autonomy.

Row v Wade gives all women in the whole country a degree of protection. Why on earth would you allow that to be lost to the whims of whoever is in power in each state?

Having said that, all they need is an edict from Biden, just like the gender ID one. I wonder why this is not being issued? Nothing to do with the fact that it's 'only' women, I wonder 😡

The Amazons had it right!

DropYourSword · 04/05/2022 08:42

Like it's just so fucking easy to change state.

WaltzingWaters · 04/05/2022 08:43

It would be awful and a huge step backwards for women’s rights. It will also mean a lot of women and girls die or have lifelong problems due to needing to seek out unsafe illegal abortions. Or a lot of unwanted children born who are not able to be cared for properly in one way or another.

OfstedOffred · 04/05/2022 08:43

You can never ban abortion you can only ban safe, legal abortion.

This. Banning legal abortion just means teenagers attempting to do it with coat hangers, women ordering all sorts of bloody poisons online & ending up dying/seriously ill.

RestingPandaFace · 04/05/2022 08:43

You cannot be pro-choice and think that banning safe and legal abortion is ever a good thing.

If evangelicals and legislators don’t support abortion they don’t have to have one, but they have no place forcing women to be pregnant even at the cost of their own lives.

newnamethanks · 04/05/2022 08:43

I refer you to Margaret Attwood. That should be sufficient for anybody.

loveisanopensore · 04/05/2022 08:44

informingchoicesni.org/central-access-point

Women in the UK still have to travel for abortions too!

codeVeronica · 04/05/2022 08:44

Would it really be so bad for those who want or need an abortion?

Yes. Yes it would.

vivainsomnia · 04/05/2022 08:44

The idea that people would move to another state because of this is ridiculous. Women don't plan abortions before getting pregnant. Who would say 'I'm giving up my job, moving away from my family and friends, facing the unknown, just in case I fall pregnant by accident and need an abortion'

Those who can afford it, and are able to will go out of state. The others....well, the consequences is why it was made legal in the USA and most places in Europe.

Sirzy · 04/05/2022 08:45

all a ban will do is force it underground and make it so much more dangerous for the women who need an abortion for whatever reason.

if you don’t agree with abortion fine, don’t have one. But that doesn’t give anyone the right to remove that as an option for other women.

allsorts1 · 04/05/2022 08:45

Obviously I don’t want Roe v Wade overturned! In an ideal world it wouldn’t be. However with the draft decision going in that direction I have been pondering the legal & political ramifications and the different context of the US and the states system. I don’t need my ass handed to me re:abortion (v v pro choice!) - I just wanted to discuss the various ramifications in the different context of the US that’s all.

OP posts:
SpindleInTheWind · 04/05/2022 08:46

What’s it got to do with you anyway, OP?

If you don’t want one, don’t have one.

Treacletreacle · 04/05/2022 08:46

Im not sure you can say your pro choice when you're even asking this question. No man in a suit should be able to take the decision away from any woman. It sadly does feel like we are going back in time.

PurassicJark · 04/05/2022 08:46

Yeah you're wrong. Very wrong.
