Humble bragging

I have only come across this term on MN but i think I wintessed it first hand... whats it all about?

Family in lemur enclosure at zoo talking to keeper.

Keeper "you can get a little closer if you want"

Woman "we don't need too thanks we honey mooned in Madagascar so we have seen so many lemurs up close"

Keeper "oh okay, bet that was great"

Woman "it was amaaaazing... we could hear them all around our cabin at night aaaaahahahahhaha" (not sure why this was funny- but apparently it was hilarious)

Don't get me wrong I wasn't jealous in the slightest... nothing i would be creeped out by more than animals at night...

It just felt like one up man ship at its finest. I mean why go in there if you only want to belittle the experience Confused

Whats the worst humble brag you have witnessed?

How were they belittling anything?

PutinIsAWarCriminal · 03/05/2022 10:57

A new guy at an old place of work received his company car, brand new, mid range, perhaps 1.6l Ford or something steady. Humbled bragged that his father wouldn't let him park it on the drive because it was the cheapest car on the street.
Another one, a team won £2k watches during a staff incentive. Boss asked why a team member wasn't wearing said watch at a staff evening out event and team member said it was because he saved his cheaper watches for everyday use.

I'm not sure that's a humble brag, just seems a straightforward brag.

My friend posted on FB how annoyed she was after leaving the gym an athlete bumped into her outside and made a comment about having such pretty girls training stopped it feeling like hard work - she was outraged as she was lifting X amount of weight and not just there to look pretty. Ok but she needed her very large Facebook friend circle to know she was considered pretty.

FiveNineFive · 03/05/2022 12:07

None of these things seem like humble bragging

Maydaysoonenough · 03/05/2022 12:12

Last time we walked through a lemer walkway a family were telling their dc c to look at the monkeys.. Multiple adults.

CounsellorTroi · 03/05/2022 12:20

Something I heard “a client gave me a helicopter ride as a thank you. I’m worried I’ll be scared and won’t enjoy it”.

MarinoRoyale · 03/05/2022 12:29

I don’t think they’re humble brags, just flat out brags!

Botoxbotox · 03/05/2022 12:33

A humble brag is more like "what a terrible parents evening, the teacher said she can't find enough work to fully stretch Little Johnny and that's why he's acting up, we've a long road ahead with him!".
I've actually seen this written on FB. Cringe.

Botoxbotox · 03/05/2022 12:34

Oh and anther "absolutely embarrassed today in the bakery when they couldn't understand Eli, the troubles of having a tri-lingual child who keeps slipping in to the wrong language".

RoseGoldEagle · 03/05/2022 12:39

The OP’s sounds like a straightforward brag really!

I think maybe ‘stealth boast’ might be more accurate for lots of these! Not sure what’s even attempting to be humble about any of them really!

I think this wins 😂

It was the smug laugh afterwards that really tickled me 😂

I saw one of a Fb group yesterday:

'I'm getting a bit concerned as so many posters are struggling with their children sleeping. My baby sleeps 12 hours in the night and a few in the day. He's always been amazing at sleeping. Should I be worried that he's sleeping so well?'

It's not word for word but pretty much!

This is a definite humble brag. Most of the others on this thread are just outright brags.

I know a woman IRL who is a successful interiors blogger. Lives in a beautiful thatched cottage and has about 100K followers. She is QUEEN of the humble brag and does it all the time on her posts as well as in real life. It’s all “oh what a silly billy I am, I forgot how temperamental the aga is and it went out while we were on our wholesome family walk so we had to go to the local gastro pub. Good job they’ve got such a lovely roaring fire although nothing compares to a glass of wine in front of our 300 year old fireplace after a cracking Sunday lunch. Can’t win ‘em all, teehee” (subtext: did you notice that I live in a beautiful old house and have an aga and stunning period features? And that we do glorious family activities and can afford to bin a whole Sunday lunch and go to the idyllic pub that we are soooo lucky to live close to and blah blah blah” she is hunks she’s doing self deprecation but she’s stealthily doing the exact opposite.

Glitterspy · 03/05/2022 13:09

Not sure if this is the same thing but people who post on a blimmin weekly basis “I’m just sooo proud of little Johnny for passing his grade 8 lute/ advanced skiing/ interpretive dance exams well done Johnny, mama’s so proud of you”…

No, you are not proud, you are boasting!!! Gives me blind rage. Fair enough once in a blue moon everyone is proud of their child and sometimes chooses to post this. Doing it week in week out and doing it just because you’re “soooo proud” is humble bragging in my opinion!

PeacockPartyTime · 03/05/2022 13:12

The ones I hate the most are people on FB going ‘so blessed to be able to donate to the food bank today. It’s the little things‘

Then you get all the adoring comments from their mates because they’ve donated a packet of 29p pasta and they’re loving it. People who genuinely want to help don’t brag about it.

Idk I got the midwife out on day 3 with dd2 because she was sleeping a lot and very chilled ( didn’t last!). I was genuinely concerned because dd1 had silent reflux and screamed round the clock. The midwife with dd2 was like ‘no this is normal newborn behaviour’.

ParisNoir · 03/05/2022 13:17

Its not strictly humble bragging but all the FB posts and memes about "be kind" coming from the meanest, most bitchy, nastiest, gossipy, cruel people I know on FB are making me eye roll

Bornsloppy · 03/05/2022 13:18

"yes little Tabitha isn't walking yet but she's so advanced in her speech"
Tabitha is usually staring vacantly at a wall of licking a plug socket.

ShirleyPhallus · 03/05/2022 13:18

MN is the worst for this!

”I was at the supermarket today and got ID’d for alcohol, it is so inconvenient to pass for an 18 year old when I’m actually 52!” <preeeeen>

I'd be tempted to say in response "I completely understand. It must be a bit concerning having such a lazy, lethargic child. My child wakes up early every morning asking for his educational flash cards" 😆

NippyWoowoo · 03/05/2022 13:24

This one is maybe more a stealth boast than a humble brag (are they the same?)

Friend of mine was invited to stay on a yacht by some friends. She complained to me that it was nice but she didn't get to taste the 'authentic' food of the region because 'we just ate lobster every night 🙄'

😂 that reminds me of a comment on a 'i look too young thread' where someone replied

'Oh that's sad, do you also have too much money in the bank?' Grin

MangosteenSoda · 03/05/2022 13:31

A lemur climbed on my head in Madagascar.

Misses point of thread

NippyWoowoo · 03/05/2022 13:36

Or the threads here of ones complaining that they don't qualify for the 30 hours/tax free childcare because they earn over the threshold 😢

It's 100K NET, I think you'll be fine

5128gap · 03/05/2022 13:37

I get so depressed shopping for clothes. Size 8s are HUGE these days, and nothing fits me.

My food bill has shot up since DS has been back from uni. He eats us out of house and home. I suppose that's what comes of being 6' 2" and a natural athlete!

DD was furious the other day. Her male friend thought we were sisters and said I was hot. So embarrassing for her.

Sometimes I worry that we haven't taught DC the value of money as they've always been able to have everything they wanted.

I hardly see hubby since his promotion. I Sometimes wonder if the extra £50k is worth it.
