Work not paying us until tomorrow

EllaVaNight · 03/05/2022 09:17

I'm supposed to be paid today. I called work as I haven't received it. They said because it was a bank holiday yesterday we won't be paid until tomorrow?

Does anyone know if they can do this? I could cry, I need nappies food and fuel to fetch my eldest from school. I also need to top up the gas and electric. I was already short because I was over taxed so I'm waiting for that too.

Does anyone have any knowledge in this area?

Thanks.

30th May isn't a bank holiday but Thursday 2nd & Friday 3rd June are.

EllaVaNight · 03/05/2022 12:10

Thanks for the advice and info everyone. It doesn't seem as though anywhere is able to provide immediate help so we'll just ride it out.

Thank you for all replies they're really appreciated.

You honestly have not a single friend or family member to borrow £10 or even 2 nappies from..

icelolly12 · 03/05/2022 12:49

Food banks have nappies etc. If there's any local churches see if they can help, or other religious centres. Facebook mutual aid/neighbour groups may have advice.

@BarbaraofSeville I already have an overdraft but I'm at the limit already due to being overtaxed. We're waiting for UC payment and PIP assessment as DP has cancer. Thanks for your reply.

My company paid late once due to a banking issue - if I remember rightly they were happy to pay bank charges for bounced payments etc as obviously many people have billed come out based on payday.

Dillydollydingdong · 03/05/2022 13:05

Yes they can do it. The contract between you says you will work and they will pay. They will pay, tomorrow.

Siht · 03/05/2022 13:05

I have no idea of course where you are OP, but could you post on a local Facebook group to see if anyone has spare nappies? I'm just thinking as we have a few packs that are now too small that we'll just keep for our next baby, but if someone nearby needed them I'd happily drop them off at no cost.
We could probably spare some food too, others might do the same, although I'm not sure what you could do for fuel.

MaverickSnoopy · 03/05/2022 13:06

Put a shout out on local Facebook group for nappies.

Re the job, the inconsistency with wages would concern me. If you look them up on Companies House you may get an indication of their financial position. They might of course just be rubbish at paying people.

I stand corrected!

Norugratsatall · 03/05/2022 13:11

Do you have any Nector or club card points OP Which you could use to buy nappies or food?

I feel for you, you sound exhausted and as though you have the weight of the world on your shoulders. Sending 💐

Vampirethriller · 03/05/2022 13:12

Olio app has a "wanted" section. Ask if anyone has any nappies. I've just put a load on my local one!

HopeMumsnet · 03/05/2022 13:15

Hello everyone,

We've had a number of reports from people concerned about this thread so, as we usually do in these circumstances, we're putting our heads round the door with some important reminders.

Right now we can't see any evidence to indicate that the OP isn't above board – if we did, we'd remove the thread straight away. But the truth is that, sadly, we at MNHQ can't know with 100% certainty that any poster is genuine, no matter who they are or how long they have been here. As frustrating as it is, we're not able to vouch for anyone here.

So we always ask users to remember that not everyone on the internet is who they say they are – and remind folk not to give more to another poster, either financially (in cash or gifts) or emotionally (in time or care and support) than they'd be prepared to lose if things went wrong. Though, we strongly advise against parting with any cash or giving away your personal details, and if you receive a PM which makes you uneasy - report it to us and we’ll take a look.

Sorry to hijack your thread briefly there, OP – we really hope you get it all sorted soon.

Snozzlemaid · 03/05/2022 13:18

My dp is paid weekly on a Thursday but it's always Friday when there's a bank holiday.

Siht · 03/05/2022 13:19

I wouldn't send any money (sorry OP) to someone online for the reasons given by MNHQ, but if you need a full pack of size 4 nappies or enough size 5 or 6 to last at least a day or 2 OP, I can give you those if you happen to live near me.

SaltandPeppasHere · 03/05/2022 13:23

Do you have a family well-being centre or similar near you. They will be able to help with nappies and/or a referral to the foodbank to get essentials. The school
i work in would also help you with these things of you called us.

EllaVaNight · 03/05/2022 09:45

I'm also cross because I was meant to get my painkillers prescription for painkillers today (endometriosis) which I now can't get til Monday as I'm at work for the next 4 days doing 12hr shifts and DP is too ill to be going anywhere.

I suggest setting up postal prescriptions for the future. It will be one less thing to worry about.

steff13 · 03/05/2022 13:40

Do you know any parents at school who could bring your kid home today?

EllaVaNight · 03/05/2022 13:54

Just an update, DP has found his nectar card which has some points on it, thank you to the poster who suggested it as it jogged DPs memory.

Not sure why people are doubting that I don't have people lined up offering to lend me money. You must be very privileged people.

Fwiw I'm careful with money. But for some reason I got emergency taxed. And you don't expect such a devastating illness.

Thank you to the majority who have been supportive, it's really appreciated. To those who have judged me and reported me for asking if this issue is allowed regarding changing the date of pay, it really puts posters off asking for advice. I didn't ask anyone for money and nor would I. I was simply asking for advice.

OP posts:
EllaVaNight · 03/05/2022 13:56

@Siht I haven't asked anybody for money, nor would I. I was asking for advice. Im sorry if you got this mixed up with another thread or something.

Stomacharmeleon · 03/05/2022 14:09

@EllaVaNight I have just been given a grant by macmillian. Took me about twenty minutes on the phone. Just message me if you want the details or i can help.

iggybop · 03/05/2022 14:32

Thats crap OP

The BH was yesterday but that doesn't explain how you're not paid today, being a
Tuesday.

Its not like the BH was a last min surprise. Payroll could have been prepped ready
To go last week

Would any other company take their DD a day late for this reason?

Tuesday is a normal business / banking day

iggybop · 03/05/2022 14:40

Boots points? Tesco/ sainsburys points if you have them for emergency stuff

EmmaGrundyForPM · 03/05/2022 15:52

You sound like you are doing an amazing job under the circumstances. I hope some of the suggestions here are useful. MacMillan are often incredibly helpful about all sorts of things, including financial.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 03/05/2022 17:00

I haven't asked anybody for money, nor would I

Nobody's posted to say you are, OP; unfortunately it happens on MN all too often, but that doesn't automatically mean you're one of them

There was a recent thread where peeople were falling over themselves to praise a poster determined to send money to a likely scammer, so maybe concern's been increased by that too?

MrsPinkCock · 03/05/2022 18:58

To answer your original question, it depends on the wording of your contract.

If it says you will be paid “four weekly on a Tuesday” and they miss that deadline then they’re in breach of contract and liable for any fees or late payment charges you incur as a result.

if it says you will be paid four weekly “on or around” a Tuesday then they wouldn’t be in breach.

Neither wording helps you when you don’t have any overdraft though. I hope you get something sorted.
