Work not paying us until tomorrow

EllaVaNight · 03/05/2022 09:17

I'm supposed to be paid today. I called work as I haven't received it. They said because it was a bank holiday yesterday we won't be paid until tomorrow?

Does anyone know if they can do this? I could cry, I need nappies food and fuel to fetch my eldest from school. I also need to top up the gas and electric. I was already short because I was over taxed so I'm waiting for that too.

Does anyone have any knowledge in this area?

Thanks.

That's shit.
in the meantime, is there anyone you could borrow £20 off to cover nappies and petrol?

EllaVaNight · 03/05/2022 10:26

@EmmaGrundyForPM nope, no family to borrow from and "friends" aren't in touch since the diagnosis.

is it a care company?
when i worked in care they did the same,
unfair as the bank still takes the direct debits out on the tuesday after the bank holiday

MrsLargeEmbodied · 03/05/2022 10:27

can you ask for a sub?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 03/05/2022 10:28

or ask your bank

EllaVaNight · 03/05/2022 10:28

@MrsLargeEmbodied yes it's a care company but every other care company I've worked for has paid us early.

Have you got a community fridge, local 'free stuff' Facebook, Food Bank or Baby Bank near you? Many don't insist on a voucher and will give you some immediate help. And do look into getting more support if your DH is so seriously ill, there are organisations that will help. You may have a social prescriber at your local surgery or CAB that can help. Or look for a local 'Talk Hub' initiative that could give advice.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 03/05/2022 10:36

4th tuesday?
did you mean 1st tuesday?

FeathersMcGee · 03/05/2022 10:39

Since you are working and it’s clearly a very temporary situation, your bank should extend your overdraft for a short time. You won’t know unless you try so that should be your first port of call.

And as a PP mentioned, your energy company will advance you credit in your situation.

Longer term, as also suggested above, you need to explore whether you are entitled to more support if you’re this close to not making ends meet.

EllaVaNight · 03/05/2022 10:40

@Ragwort there are things like that but they're a drive away and I just don't have the fuel. Thanks I'll look into further support. Im just so exhausted.

@MrsLargeEmbodied its 4 weekly on a Tuesday.

OP does your area have a baby bank? They have nappies and formula for those who need it x

EllaVaNight · 03/05/2022 10:42

@FeathersMcGee I've spoken to the bank since starting the thread. It would take 2 days for the overdraft to appear they said and I'll have been paid by then.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 03/05/2022 10:45

your bank should be able to extend credit immediately

MrsLargeEmbodied · 03/05/2022 10:46

otherwise ask work for a sub

That’s very odd, mine would appear as soon as they pushed the button. Or I did, on my banking app. That’s the point of an overdraft - short term lending.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 03/05/2022 10:49

i used to go for a walk with my head scouring the ground, i found a £10 once!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 03/05/2022 10:49

is school walkable?

FinanceLPlates · 03/05/2022 10:50

Have you tried calling Macmillan Cancer support? I believe they can help financially if people‘s earnings are affected by cancer. No idea if they could help with your immediate situation but might help ease the stress and leave you less exposed going forward.

EllaVaNight · 03/05/2022 10:53

@FeathersMcGee I'll call them. This was via chat I spoke with them.

If school was walkable I'd walk. I walk everywhere I can, I don't make unnecessary trips in the car.

This was going to be one of my longer term suggestions.

OP, depending on how ill your DH is right now, surely he can make some of the phone calls you need to get yourselves in a better position for the next 24 hours? Can he call the energy company to get your emergency credit added? Though we had a prepay meter we could go £5 into the red without having to ask, and it was just absorbed by part of our next top up. You would be entitled to have that because you have children in the house.

HumourReplacementTherapy · 03/05/2022 10:55

@EllaVaNight
See if you can get an advance in your partners UC.

SailingNotSurfing · 03/05/2022 11:02

Another person suggesting you contact your energy company and Macmillan.

You mention 'friends' - can't you ask any of them to lend you £20 until tomorrow? Or ask a neighbour, a colleague, your manager?

You are in a shitty situation and I really feel for you, if you lived locally I'd buy you a pack of nappies and top up your car with fuel.

Most people are kind - I hope someone steps in and bails you out.

BarbaraofSeville · 03/05/2022 11:15

Definitely talk to MacMillian about help available. They might be able to help speed up the UC/PCP assessment?

I know neither solution is a good one, but might you be able to apply for a low rate credit card for any debt you need to take out? Overdrafts charge very high interest, and are incredibly hard to get out of. If you got a credit card, you could get one with a low introductory interest rate and it wouldn't cost very much as long as you paid the minimum each month, and it's likely you'd be able to transfer the balance if you got to the end of the special offer period and couldn't pay it off.

Rosehugger · 03/05/2022 11:24

Ours is a specific date and we get paid early if it falls at the weekend or BH. Not having a specific date is rubbish for direct debits coming out. Eevn with a specific date, our Barclays app ALWAYS says "You have insufficient funds blah blah" (and then everything just comes out as normal and it's fine) because the DDs come out the same day as the money goes in.

It's also rubbish for them to randomly pay you late. Staff would obviously want to be paid BEFORE a BH weekend.

Clarinet1 · 03/05/2022 11:37

Sorry to hear you’re in such a bad situation OP. Hope you sort something out. Just a thought - will you need to guard against the same situation for the late May bank
holiday (30th)?
