Yes I know she's interviewing Boris but for fuck's sake, let him get a word in edgeways, even worse when Adil Ray is on as well.

She's so rude

I'm not surprised some services have been cut. Central funding for local government has been dramatically cut over the last ten years.

"This is because largely because of reductions in central government grants, which have been the most sharply cut component of local government revenue since 2009/10. Central government grants – including retained business rates – were cut 37% in real-terms between 2009/10 and 2019/20, from £41.0bn to £26.0bn in 2019/20 prices. "

I'm disgusted at the energy companies who have doubled their energy prices, they are the villains here not Johnson

And Labour’s proposing to tax their profits. Anyone who’s truly disgusted can just vote for it.

SueSaid · 03/05/2022 18:05

'And Labour’s proposing to tax their profits.'

They pay 40% tax already, you can't just change tax laws willy nilly no matter how desperate Labour are for local council votes. Plus they need to invest for future provision, I think forensic Starmer knows this yet will probably be shouted down by Rayner .

balalake · 03/05/2022 18:06

Someone must have had a word with Mr Johnson beforehand about eye contact (I have just seen the interview). He did not stare at Susanna Reid's tits in the way he does with Laura Kuennsberg.

Or perhaps he ignores women who are 50 or older.

'This is an elderly woman, not eating properly and cold in her home. How the fuck can people feel anything but sad and disgusted at the situation?'

Let's hope she doesn't live in Croydon where meals on wheels have been discontinued by their Labour run council. Labour clearly don't care about hungry, elderly people.

Maybe reserve your anger for central government who have been cutting funding for councils since coming to power. With the focus on harder, deeper cuts for Labour run councils. This is the same central government who know full well that there is no more fat left to trim, and hasn't been for years. The central government you voted for.

Also the central government who are refusing to implement a windfall tax on the energy companies you are castigating.

Maybe think about that.

SarahProblem · 03/05/2022 18:10

The amount of bootlickers defending BJ - shameful.

Blossomtoes · 03/05/2022 18:12

you can't just change tax laws willy nilly

You can get if you’re in government. Remind me who just increased National Insurance?

And they don’t pay anything like 40%. Corporation tax is 19%. You’re obviously not that disgusted.

HarrietPierce · 03/05/2022 18:16

The same posters just come up defending the indefensible.

Notonthestairs · 03/05/2022 18:17

"They pay 40% tax already, you can't just change tax laws willy nilly no matter how desperate Labour are for local council votes."

I thought Corporation tax on oil and gas is 30% - so a one off windfall tax of 10% would take it to 40% for a specified period.

Geoffrey Howe (Tory) did similar with the banks and later oil and gas in the early 80's.

"BP and Shell have both spent billions of pounds recently on what are called share buybacks, which is what companies do when they have money they can afford to spend on boosting their share price.
They also pay relatively high dividends, which are the other way companies distribute their profits to shareholders."
From the BBC. .

You can't just change laws... isn't that part of what Parliament is supposed to do?

I think you’ll find Johnson is the villain here. Try looking a bit harder.

Funny how Sunak could willy nilly put up the NI and then when there was uproar he willy nilly changed it again.

Blossomtoes · 03/05/2022 18:21

Is willy nilly competing with silly for word/phrase of the day?

newnamethanks · 03/05/2022 18:23

Oh Blossom I fear you must be mistaken. I distinctly heard our illustrious PM and Speaker of Truths, Honest Boz, assure Susanna and the rest of us proles that he had cut NI more than, oh, dunno, whoever cut it last. Said it this morning on the telly. Laughable.

Mystery2345 · 03/05/2022 18:27

i really hope poor old Elsie isn’t harrassed now. I strongly suspect that a vulnerable elderly person has been used for political gain.

Notonthestairs · 03/05/2022 18:32

Full fact has produced a fact checker from todays I/v.

It covers Council taxes - it seems to depend depends on the metric used to compare.

In single tier councils Tories charge more than the average council and more than Labour councils.

Rather than use average council taxes the Tories have used Band D as a comparison point which does show Conservative charges as lower but
"This reflects the fact that Conservative areas have more expensive housing than Labour, meaning that their band D rates are lower while their average rates are higher."

I thought it 40%?

I had a read around when Starmer first talked about it as on the face of it it seems straightforward

this was quite good on cons, includes 40% stat
www.pinsentmasons.com/out-law/analysis/windfall-tax-on-north-sea-oil-and-gas

this is a good indication of U.K. tax v OECD, we are high

www.opec.org/opec_web/en/data_graphs/333.htm

I do think Starmer gets the reinvestment issue, and pensions

I’m not completely against it but would like to hear more

Mystery2345 · 03/05/2022 18:36

The govt could immediately remove the green levy adding an average of £153 to energy for a start.

Blossomtoes · 03/05/2022 18:38

30% according to the government @MarshaBradyo. That article is hardly impartial.

www.gov.uk/guidance/oil-gas-and-mining-ring-fence-corporation-tax

MarshaBradyo · 03/05/2022 18:43

Ok thanks

What about the supplementary charge?

‘The current rate of tax on ring-fenced profits is 30 per cent. The supplementary charge (SC) is an additional charge on a company's ring-fenced profits (but with no deduction for finance costs). The current supplementary charge rate is 10 per cent.’

might need a tax person to say more

Or in my home town where the Conservative council haven't provided meals on wheels for at least 20 years.

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 03/05/2022 19:00

Wasn't there a news programme recently exposing how energy companies exploit the tax system so that end up with negative tax bills? Something to do with getting to offset the cost of decommisioning old infrastructure against their tax liabilities.

Notonthestairs · 03/05/2022 19:02

Actually reading that note (thanks @MarshaBradyo) it does look like 40% (30% + 10 supplemental charge) - I'm happy to retract my 30% but agree it would be interesting to hear from a tax person. I'd love to know whether supplemental charges are permanent and why are they added (for a specific purpose? Environmental?)

Regardless Geoffrey Howe was happy enough to introduce windfall taxes for banks, gas and oil. It's not unheard of.

I’m not sure but I noticed BP got a loss of £20bn this quarter, maybe it’s a once off due to Russia exit but generally profits are high - although a windfall tax will only work if they are high

Unsure33 · 03/05/2022 19:17

@HarrietPierce

nothing to do with being a Boris fan . A lot of posters said they wanted a hard interview . That was not the problem . She was showing her PERSONAL dislike for him and was rude and talking over him . Two wrongs don’t make a right .

Unsure33 · 03/05/2022 19:21

@Youaremysunshine14

Just because one person suggests she downsizes to make a point does not lead to a generalisation that all conservatives think that.

you can’t use that point to prove your argument . it does not wash .

just like all parties , voters are from a wide range of backgrounds and have different opinions .

your old tradional posh v working class is a very dated pre-conception .
