Yet another thread where the OP has a niche role, and obviously doesnt want to say what it is with all the other stuff they have posted (understood!)

So how about you name change, tell us all about it - and lets see if you are recognised!

OP posts:

name change

RedMake88 · 02/05/2022 12:02

My role isn’t niche but my sector is. I would say there are about 50 people across the country do what I do in my sector. Possibly not even that many!!

RedMake88 · 02/05/2022 12:03

Oh I didn’t name change 😂

olympicsrock · 02/05/2022 12:05

I also thought tennis girl…

RNG1 · 02/05/2022 12:05

Hobbies can be outing if further information is given as part of the thread. My main hobby is a trading card game. It’s very male dominated, and as a woman I’ve ran the local club on and off over the years so I’m known for it in my area and probably in a few surrounding towns as I’ve also travelled to play it. If I said what part of the country I’m in it’s possible I could be outed.

My job is in a relatively uncommon healthcare speciality, and again, if I also mentioned the part of the country I live in, I could possibly be outed.

I understand why people are vague when other information added together could be outing. I never get why people get angry at people not naming hobbies, as knowing whether it’s cycling, running or ultimate frisbee wouldn’t normally change the advice given.

You were the Athena tennis girl?

That was my immediate thought, too! Grin

ninnynonny · 02/05/2022 12:14

The Athena tennis girl was 1970s. As much as I would like it to be so, the 70s aren't only 25 years ago sadly!

Eightypercent · 02/05/2022 12:15

@HereWeAreAtTheEdgeOfTheWorld
@olympicsrock

Ha ha ha, no not the Athena tennis girl.

My hobby is about as niche as it gets, overwhelmingly male-dominated, and I'm one of only a handful of women in the country who participate at that level. So well outing. Can't be arsed to tell you what it is though.

Is that your bum on the tennis poster then?

Tiredalwaystired · 02/05/2022 12:28

Oops replied to the wrong quote 😂😂😂

Eightypercent · 02/05/2022 12:38

I aught to clarify, when I wrote world famous, I meant known internationally, not every one in the world knows me.

PeekabooAtheZoo · 02/05/2022 12:44

None of my stuff is outing in and of itself but due to ADHD I've had quite a lot of specific and random jobs, hobbies and studies and lived all over the place, so I NC for certain threads when I have advice for certain things because a) I realise I could fall foul of the self-appointed trollhunters faster than I could type an explanation and b) anyone who knows me would add it all up immediately and know who I was which could have repercussions for other threads eg when I mention MIL who I think is on here.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 02/05/2022 12:48

My baby is called Herod
I work as a Lion Tamer
My hobby is competitive duck herding

Damn, forgot to NC

toomanybooksonmybookcase · 02/05/2022 13:02

Niche hobby- I knit woolly knockers.

In particular I knit them for ladies who have had a mastectomy or other breast surgery. I'm told that a NHS silicone prosthesis can be heavy, feel weird and rub on sore parts/scars. Soft, 100% cotton is imo a whole lot nicer.
My oldest DC is horrified and has outright banned me from knitting when her friends are in the vicinity of the house, let alone actually in the house.

Knitted knockers UK if anyone's interested

Norush4 · 02/05/2022 13:03

@Vidax can you clarify on the term niche?

Vidax · 02/05/2022 13:13

Eightypercent · 02/05/2022 11:35

@Bunnyfuller I get the NC bit but if I told the whole thing you'd be able to Google my IRL name in about two minutes, which kind of defeats the purpose of an anonymous forum.

But if you change your name for this and never use it again, what does it matter

All it tells us is that person x y z uses mumsnet (or not, as may be lying obviously)

I am not sure peoples jobs are as niche as they think they are.

I could describe mine a niche. There’s only me who does the role and we are the biggest company in my industry. But I would have to tell the role title, who I worked for or what industry I work in. There’s not many large companies in our industry. All quite well known.

Its fairly easy to give detail about my work without, those details.

I am not sure peoples jobs are as niche as they think they are.

Mine is. NHS role, but less than 15 people in the UK work in the same role as me. It’s very niche.

But yes, the ones who state the hobby would out them when it’s usually golf or cycling or some such make me roll my eyes..

pepperpie · 02/05/2022 13:22

I think @Bunnyfuller was a Gladiator! How very cool!

I'll bite. I'm world famous for something that happened to me over 25 years ago, to the extent that my now boss had a poster of me on his bedroom wall as a student.

And that is as much as you're getting.

I don't think any posters were made of her, but 'baby in the well' was the first thing that popped into my mind 😂

Fair play, that is niche

I can understand the baby names ones though - "Harrison" for a boy is so rare and unusual someone would be bound to realise who the OP was in RL.

There are 4 Harrisons at the local village school so not that rare.

NippyWoowoo · 02/05/2022 13:36

Bunnyfuller · 02/05/2022 11:28

I thought the whole point of the NC is so you could tell?! Then lose that name forever. One thread, one-off name, one subject then gone!

‘I’m niche this but can’t possibly tell you’ is a bit pointless, even more so if you’ve actually NC to give vague news! 😂😂😂

Well no, because NC only avoids connecting the dots through previous posts so that should the OP be recognised, their previous posts are safe. The potential and acceptance of recognition is always there.

But if you're posting about your work, you don't want to be recognised at all, if you're Will and Kate's nanny then you'd lose your job.

Thehop · 02/05/2022 13:36

My dd is the only person to be registered with her name in the U.K. as far back as I can check. I love that, and don’t mention her name on SM because I don’t want it copying 😂

NameChange540321 · 02/05/2022 13:39

I don't really want to be recognised as that is the point of being online with a random username. My job isn't all that unique anyway. Plenty of people do it.
I'm a CEO of a large tech company.
