Yet another thread where the OP has a niche role, and obviously doesnt want to say what it is with all the other stuff they have posted (understood!)

So how about you name change, tell us all about it - and lets see if you are recognised!

OP posts:
SinaraSmith · 02/05/2022 11:07

I am not sure peoples jobs are as niche as they think they are.

I could describe mine a niche. There’s only me who does the role and we are the biggest company in my industry. But I would have to tell the role title, who I worked for or what industry I work in. There’s not many large companies in our industry. All quite well known.

Its fairly easy to give detail about my work without, those details.

No thank you

chisanunian · 02/05/2022 11:15

My hobby is about as niche as it gets, overwhelmingly male-dominated, and I'm one of only a handful of women in the country who participate at that level. So well outing. Can't be arsed to tell you what it is though.

Eightypercent · 02/05/2022 11:17

I'll bite. I'm world famous for something that happened to me over 25 years ago, to the extent that my now boss had a poster of me on his bedroom wall as a student.

And that is as much as you're getting.

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 02/05/2022 11:18

I can understand the baby names ones though - "Harrison" for a boy is so rare and unusual someone would be bound to realise who the OP was in RL.

NCforwork · 02/05/2022 11:19

I'm a specialist criminal intelligence analyst for prisons. Not that many of us in the UK (up to 100 or so). So rather niche!

PeaceLurking9to5 · 02/05/2022 11:19

My hobby is watching old episodes of better call saul and breaking bad. It's quite niche. Everybody else is out cycling.

FabFitFifties · 02/05/2022 11:22

Eightypercent- music, film or sports related??

Hm. You're either Buffy, Eva Herzigova or that muscly oiled-up dude from the Athena posters with the tyres.

Marty13 · 02/05/2022 11:24

Depends how specific I am. If I say I'm a civil servant that's not outing obviously. If I specify what branche/Ministry/exact job description then yes outing as there's only two of us in the service.

A bit like saying "I work for Tesco" isn't outing but saying "I work as a cashier at the 372 east road Tesco store in Birmingham" would be.

If I say one of my kids is called John that's not outing, saying that my 3yo son is John Balonze and his sister is 2yo Jane-Ebony Balonza potentially is, if anyone I know comes across it...

My hobbies are totally not outing though - I enjoy gaming and crochet and reading.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 02/05/2022 11:26

@Marty13 You were clearly here for Balonz. <waves MN 2014 bunting>

Bunnyfuller · 02/05/2022 11:28

I thought the whole point of the NC is so you could tell?! Then lose that name forever. One thread, one-off name, one subject then gone!

‘I’m niche this but can’t possibly tell you’ is a bit pointless, even more so if you’ve actually NC to give vague news! 😂😂😂

Eightypercent · 02/05/2022 11:35

@Bunnyfuller I get the NC bit but if I told the whole thing you'd be able to Google my IRL name in about two minutes, which kind of defeats the purpose of an anonymous forum.

Innocenta · 02/05/2022 11:39

@Eightypercent Can you drop a hint as to which sport? That won't identify you, I'm sure. Even just summer vs winter.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 02/05/2022 11:41

I don’t really have any hobbies outside of TV/ reading/ gaming and scrolling the internet which I don’t think are very niche!

I’m a special education teacher which isn’t very niche either, but the area of disability I work in and the training I’ve had to do so is quite specific/ niche. It could be potentially outing if I went into detail about my job role as there aren’t a huge number of people countrywide specialising in the area I specialise in and a lot of us know each other from training on the same course and going to the same conferences/ webinars etc over the years.

I did once discover a friend’s sister on here after she posted about a family matter in a lot of detail, it happened my friend had just told me about the same matter a day or two before and every detail was exactly as she’d described. I did an advanced search and the sister had put on other threads details such as the birth months, ages and gender of her children, country that she’d grown up in, city she lived in now, job etc which when put together left me certain it was her. She’d posted a couple of threads about my friend (her sister) which were very critical and also posted a few other things which my friend wouldn’t have known or liked, I didn’t ever tell my friend I’d found her sister but there probably would have been a lot of drama if I had done so or if my friend had found her sister herself. As a result I do try to ensure my posting history doesn’t immediately point to me by changing the odd identifying detail in posts where it doesn’t matter and name changing from time to time or if I’m posting anything which is either very outing or which I wouldn’t want somebody to link to me if they did work me out.

Bunnyfuller · 02/05/2022 11:41

@Eightypercent but if you bin this name, delete it from your profile and disappear under another name, how is that not anonymous? So it would be ‘oh, someone on MN said they were ……, their username is bunnyfuller. Search MN for bunnyfuller, just the one post, on this thread, and no trace elsewhere.

You NC, post, NC again and delete the single-use name! Ergo anonymous

ZeldasMum · 02/05/2022 11:44

My DD is called Zelda. Fairly rare but I have encountered some other ones 'in the wild'.

TTC for her sibling and already have some names lined up but I think the combination would be too much to put on here!

Eightypercent · 02/05/2022 11:56

@Bunnyfuller it's weird, I've spent years trying to get away from that, I don't know what to call it, alter ego perhaps but it wasn't something I invented myself. It's was also an incredibly important part of my life at the time, something I know I can never go back to. There was me and then a different me that people expected me to be. It's something I equally want or need to talk about and put behind me. Very conflicting.

@Innocenta you'd expect it to be a summer sport but we trained all year round and competed in both hemispheres.

Whelmed · 02/05/2022 11:57

I think it's the combination of information that is revealing. Job and partners job combined with hobby combined with children's ages.

Innocenta · 02/05/2022 11:59

@Eightypercent Oh, intriguing! I have a few guesses but will say no more Grin

You were the Athena tennis girl?

MsMonroeSpeaking · 02/05/2022 12:00

My job isn’t ‘niche’ but it is sensitive and I try not to discuss it too much online.

My name is instantly outing, as pretty unusual.

I don’t have any ‘hobbies’ Grin and ny DH likes football, so not exactly outing.

i make change regularly to avoid facts about my life being linked, as this site is used by a lot of people and there are some real weirdos out there!
